Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an evenhanded coverage of Korea's turbulent history during the last one hundred years, from seclusion to division. It focuses particularly on the development of the two different and antagonistic states on the peninsula since 1945. The author sees both countries through the windows of their possibilities and interests. He supplements his narrative, which makes use of rich source material, with observations he has made in South Korea, where he spent more than ten years from the 1970s to the 1990s, and where he had access to politicians and opinion leaders. The book starts by describing how the Hermit Kingdom was exposed to the greed of foreign powers at the end of the 19th century and how it became the victim of imperialistic Japan, then account is given of the country's division and the hardening of that division through the Korean War. The rule of the military and the final triumph of civilian democrats in South Korea are analyzed in much detail. One chapter is devoted to the rise and intermittent decline of the South Korean economy. The history of North Korea under Kim II Sung and under his son is told, before the foreign relations of both Koreas are explained. A chapter on the so far overwhelmingly antagonistic South-North relations concludes the book.

Download or read book The Transformation of South Korea written by Robert Bedeski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea underwent rapid economic development under a semi-military, virulently anti-communist government which banned trade unions and kept close checks on the economy. President Roe Tae Woo has, however, since 1987, introduced electoral and social reforms. Strikes and wage rises have followed, leading to a loss of competitive edge, and the growth of opposition parties has resulted in political stalemate. Robert E. Bedeski provides a thorough analysis of the institutions of government in South Korea and how they have been transformed by the introduction of political pluralism, and of the attempt to liberalize without undermining economic success. He also examines the new political parties and their role within the framework of the South Korean political system, as well as their social context. State reforms are compared with developments in Taiwan, the Phillipines, North Korea, China and the former Soviet Union. The major themes of state-building an deconomic development are thoroughly explored. The author also deals with South Korea's international environment and changing foreign policy.

Download or read book Asian Economic Tigers written by Antonio T. Medina and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes meaningful and startling comparisons between the four tiger economies in Asia (Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore) and the Philippines. The book reflects a fourteen-year study and looks into the demographics, land areas, population densities, and other social data that sometimes make for what now contributes to the composition of the 'human misery index.' The figures presented in this study will shatter much of the established knowledge about these countries. The book also explores the conventional economic data of the five countries, pinpointing differences and commonalities. Focus points include the size of income per head, their GNPs and their growth rates during the transforming period, how these were financed--internally and externally, their governments' role and the impacts upon their costs of living. The study then concentrates on the main engine of growth in these economies--the foreign trade sector. The author highlights each countries' foreign trade in terms of nature, composition, direction, restructuring, terms of trade and exchange rates. The study brings to light the history of each country, its peculiarities, the policies undertaken to arrive where it is today, its present state, and where each country may go from here. The measures adopted in this study are in turn placed upon the Philippine scenario of those times.

Download or read book Culture as Text Text as Culture written by Elodie Lafitte and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture as Text, Text as Culture represents a novel, interdisciplinary analysis of textuality as it pertains to Cultural Studies. More specifically, the work examines how the analysis of texts has shaped the most vital contemporary debate of Cultural Studies: the recognition that all texts and their contexts are constructs. Building upon a Post-structural/Post-modern understanding of truth as a construct, Cultural Studies has long since acknowledged the ability of texts to express the time and culture of their origin. This work, however, expands this idea, demonstrating not only how a culture is preserved in a text, but how that text can in turn define its culture, even redefine its history. This compendium is structured around four of the most prominent contemporary topics of Cultural Studies: the relationship between historical and fictional writing, the ability of authors to recreate or redefine history, the relationship between language and image, and the ability for traditionally marginalized groups to reassert their place in history. The book presents articles from a large spectrum of disciplinary fields and civilizations in order to demonstrate how the application of Cultural Studies can unite seemingly disparate disciplines.
Download or read book Narratives of Nation Building in Korea written by Sheila Miyoshi Jager and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new insight on how key historical texts and events in Korea's history have contributed to the formation of the nation's collective consciousness. The work is woven around the unifying premise that particular narrative texts/events that extend back to the premodern period have remained important, albeit transformed, over the modern period and into the contemporary period. The author explores the relationship between gender and nationalism by showing how key narrative topics, such as tales of virtuous womanhood, have been employed, transformed, and re-deployed to make sense of particular national events. Connecting these narratives and historic events to contemporary Korean society, Jager reveals how these "sites" - or reference points - were also successfully re-deployed in the context of the division of Korea and the construction of Korea's modern consciousness.
