Book The Korean Struggle for International Identity in the Foreground of the Shufeldt Negotiation 1866 1882

Download or read book The Korean Struggle for International Identity in the Foreground of the Shufeldt Negotiation 1866 1882 written by Woong Joe Kang and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Korean Struggle for International Identity in the Foreground of the Shufeldt Negotiation, 1866-1880 places a special focus on how the Koreans view themselves and the outside world, especially China, Japan, and the United States. It challenges the one-sided, distorted China centered view of the historical and traditional Korea-China relationship, as well as the skewed view of the Korea-Japan relationship from the Japanese side. This book brings the much-neglected Korean views of these historical relationships into perspective."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Korea Under Siege 1876 1945

Download or read book Korea Under Siege 1876 1945 written by Young-Iob Chung and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Korean economy was transformed from the opening of the hermit kingdom in 1876 to the end of Japanese rule in 1945. In Korea under Siege, Young-Iob Chung focuses on capital formation, economic growth, and structural changes. The so-called miraculous economic development in the southern half of the Korean peninsula has transformed the region from an agrarian economy to that of a major industrial power in a very short time period. South Korea is now considered one of a dozen industrialized countries in the world. However, there has been little careful analysis of the heritage of the Korean economy in the traditional and transitional periods from which it launched into a modern phenomenal economic success. The approach in this study is behavioral and analytical more than historical. Chung supports this analysis with quantitative data without being mathematical, statistical, or technical. Although narratives of Korean economic history before 1945 are scarce in English, Korea under Siege builds its analysis from data and narrative description from English-, Japanese-, and Korean-language original sources."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Diplomacy of Involvement

Download or read book The Diplomacy of Involvement written by David M. Pletcher and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Like its predecessor, this important new work is focused on the connection between trade and investment on the one hand and U.S. foreign policy on the other. David Pletcher describes the trade of the United States with the Far East, the islands of the Pacific, and the northwest coast of North America from 1784 (the year of the first American trading expedition to China) to 1844 (the year of the first trade treaty with China, followed immediately by the U.S. acquisition of Oregon and California). He then traces the growth of trade and investment in Alaska, Hawaii, and the South Pacific from 1844 to 1890 and proceeds to do the same for China, Japan, and Korea. In the ensuing chapters, Pletcher covers the 1890s, including the annexation of Hawaii, the Sino-Japanese War, the acquisition of the Philippines, and the Open Door policy in China. He concludes that the American expansion across the Pacific and into the Far East was not a deliberate, consistent drive for economic hegemony but a halting, experimental, improvised movement, carried out against determined opposition and indifference and dotted with setbacks and failures. Providing his own judgments about the wisdom and effectiveness of America's new endeavors, Pletcher summarizes the problems and handicaps involved, demonstrating that errors of the twentieth century were at least partly the result of poor preparation in the 1880s and 1890s. Touching on every place where Americans undertook significant economic activity, The Diplomacy of Involvementwill be an important aid for seasoned scholars, as well as an excellent introduction for the novice

Book The Pacific in the Age of Early Industrialization

Download or read book The Pacific in the Age of Early Industrialization written by Kenneth Pomeranz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays selected for this volume show how the Pacific rapidly became part of an industrializing world. Its raw materials (notably rubber and copper) were critical, some of its handicraft industries were devastated by mechanized competition, others survived and adapted, contributing to distinctive patterns of industrialization that made Japan a new center of power, and also laid the groundwork for later growth in Taiwan, Korea, and coastal China. The Pacific coast of the Americas was also first drawn into an industrial world largely as an exporter of raw materials, but North and South diverged rapidly, portending futures even more different than those of Northeast and Southeast Asia. By the 1930s - when the uneven effects of industrialization would have much to do with plunging the Pacific into war - one can already glimpse in outline the structural bases for many of the region's contemporary characteristics. All this is set in context in the important introduction by Kenneth Pomeranz.

Download or read book Transition to Global Rivalry written by John Albert White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years before the First World War, the realignment of world powers resulted in agreements concluded in 1904 and 1907 between Britain, France, Russia and Japan. John Albert White terms this a Quadruple Entente, a more accurate and complete description than the more commonly used Triple Entente, which omits Japan. His more inclusive view leaves undisturbed the conception of Europe as the centre of political gravity, but at the same time calls proper attention to the enhanced role which Japan had won through her victories in the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars and by her careful management of her entry into the larger family of nations. This wider perspective on the crucial pre-war years shows how, in its political context as well as its geographical terrain and its general impact, the First World War was a world war in every sense.
