Grinker suggests that a fundamental obstacle to peace on the peninsula is that South Korea has become a nation in which nearly all aspects of economic, political, and cultural identity are defined in opposition to North Korea. He further demonstrates that in spite of its status as a sacred goal for all Koreans, the idea of unification threatens the world in which almost every South Korean has been born and raised. In chapters on defectors, divided families, student protests, and early education, Grinker reveals how South Korean conceptions of unification prevent either side from recognizing that a unified Korea must also be a diverse Korea. In other words, Grinker points out, unification is largely perceived by South Koreans not as the integration of different identities but as the southern conquest and assimilation of the north - in short, as winning the war. Starting in the 1920s, a narrator-adult voice began to speak directly to a child-reader. This child audience was perceived as unique because of a new concept: the child-heart, the perception that the child's body and mind were transparent and knowable, and that they rested on the threshold of culture. This privileged location enabled writers and illustrators, educators and psychologists, intellectual elite and laypersons to envision the child as a powerful antidote to the present and as an uplifting metaphor of colonial Korea's future. Reading children's periodicals against the political, educational, and psychological discourses of their time, Dafna Zur argues that the figure of the child was particularly favorable to the project of modernity and nation-building, as well as to the colonial and postcolonial projects of socialization and nationalization. She demonstrates the ways in which Korean children's literature builds on a trajectory that begins with the child as an organic part of nature, and ends, in the post-colonial era, with the child as the primary agent of control of nature. Figuring Korean Futures reveals the complex ways in which the figure of the child became a driving force of nostalgia that stood in for future aspirations for the individual, family, class, and nation.

As colonial subjects of an empire headed toward total war, Korean writers in this global fascist moment produced some of the most sophisticated writings of twentieth-century modernism. Yi T'aejun, Ch'oe Myongik, Im Hwa, So Insik, Ch'oe Chaeso, Pak T'aewon, Kim Namch'on, and O Changhwan, among other Korean writers, lived through a rare colonial history in which their vernacular language was first inducted into the modern, only to be shut out again through the violence of state power. The colonial suppression of Korean-language publications was an effort to mobilize toward war, and it forced Korean writers to face the loss of their letters and devise new, creative forms of expression. Their remarkable struggle reflects the stark foreclosure at the heart of the modern colonial experience. Straddling cultural, intellectual, and literary history, this book maps the different strategies, including abstraction, irony, paradox, and even silence, that Korean writers used to narrate life within the Japanese empire.

Peruvian migrant workers began arriving in South Korea in large numbers in the mid 1990s, eventually becoming one of the largest groups of non-Asians in the country. Migrant Conversions shows how despite facing unstable income and legal exclusion, migrants come to see Korea as an ideal destination. Some even see it as part of their divine destiny. Faced with looming departures, Peruvians develop cosmopolitan plans to transform themselves from economic migrants into pastors, lovers, and leaders. Set against the backdrop of 2008’s global financial crisis, Vogel explores the intersections of three types of conversions— money, religious beliefs and cosmopolitan plans—to argue that conversions are how migrants negotiate the meaning of their lives in a constantly changing transnational context. At the convergence of cosmopolitan projects spearheaded by the state, churches, and other migrants, Peruvians change the value and meaning of their migrations. Yet, in attempting to make themselves at home in the world and give their families more opportunities, they also create potential losses. This new scenario for Korean unifi cation has three basic elements among others. First, the entire systems of the current democracy in South Korea will be applied across the entire Korean peninsula. Secondly, the structure will guarantee future securities of North Korean leaders and their descendants. Thirdly, it will obtain the Stability of the East Asian region through the United Nations. After the unification, all citizens of the new state will enjoy the freedom and liberty currently enjoyed by the citizens of South Korea. The division of the Korean peninsula was an unfortunate product of the Cold War created by two superpowers. Particularly after the collapse of the Soviet Blocs in the 1990s, North Korea became isolated and unable to make any advance in its economic front. The result is that the survival of its regime as a state is currently at risk. Moreover, South Korea possesses more than 30 times the economic strength in terms of GDP and twice the population of North Korea. It has a vast technological lead and has stolen away the North’s allies, as well as the friendship of most other states. The economic miracle of the South was achievable under the protection of the US defense system, whereas the dismal economy of the North is a result of the continual presence of the US forces in the South and the collapse of the Soviet Blocs. In light of these economic developments, now is the time for the government of South Korea to make a bold move towards an orderly Korean unification with the guarantee of stability in East Asia through the United Nations. It is regrettable to say that the Government of North Korea must give up the idea of unifying the Korean peninsula on its own terms and accept the proposed unification mode in exchange for the future securities of the North Korean leaders and their descendants. Then, most important is the end of the human rights abuses by the North Korean regime. Also equally importantly, this new unification scenario turns out to save more than $100 Billion in unification capital cost, in comparison with other known unification scenarios. Today the two Koreas have become at best a peripheral security interest to America, while economic relations have been warming up for mutual prosperity among the powerful neighboring countries- China, Japan, Russia and the US. Their governments should unselfishly support this new unification endeavor of the Koreans along with the guarantee of stability in East Asia through the United Nations. The proposed governmental structure of the new unified state is historically viable, immediately applicable and financially attractive. Thus, the Korea unification, outlined in this proposal, will provide peace, prosperity and no further nuclear threat by the North Korean regime to all nations in the world.
