Book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics written by William Frawley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 2198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, 2nd Edition encompasses the full range of the contemporary field of linguistics, including historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical linguistics with special attention given to interrelations within branches of linguistics and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines. Areas of intersection with the social and behavioral sciences--ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and behavioral linguistics--receive major coverage, along with interdisciplinary work in language and literature, mathematical linguistics, computational linguistics, and applied linguistics.Longer entries in the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, ranging up to four thousand words, survey the major fields of study--for example, anthropological linguistics, history of linguistics, semantics, and phonetics. Shorter entries treat specific topics within these fields, such as code switching, sound symbolism, and syntactic features. Other short entries define and discuss technical terms used within the various subfields or provide sketches of the careers of important scholars in the history of linguistics, such as Leonard Bloomfield, Roman Jakobson, and Edward Sapir.A major portion of the work is its extensive coverage of languages and language families. From those as familiar as English, Japanese, and the Romance languages to Hittite, Yoruba, and Nahuatl, all corners of the world receive treatment. Languages that are the subject of independent entries are analyzed in terms of their phonology, grammatical features, syntax, and writing systems. Lists attached to each article on a language group or family enumerate all languages, extinct or still spoken, within that group and provide detailed information on the number of known speakers, geographical range, and degree of intelligibility with other languages in the group. In this way, virtually every known language receives coverage. For ease of reference and to aid research, the articles are alphabetically arranged, each signed by the contributor, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, line drawings, maps, tables, and diagrams, and readily accessible via a system of cross-references and a detailed index and synoptic outline. Authoritative, comprehensive, and innovative, the 2nd edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics will be an indispensable addition to personal, public, academic, and research libraries and will introduce a new generation of readers to the complexities and concerns of this field of study.

Book Adivasis Migrants and the State in India

Download or read book Adivasis Migrants and the State in India written by Jagannath Ambagudia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the contested relationship between Adivasis or the indigenous peoples, migrants and the state in India. It delves into the nature and dynamics of competition and resource conflicts between the Adivasis and the migrants. Drawing on the ground experiences of the Dandakaranya Project – when Bengali migrants from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) were rehabilitated in eastern and central India – the author traces the connection between resource scarcity and the emergence of Naxalite politics in the region in tandem with the key role played by the state. He critically examines the way in which conflicts between these groups emerged and interacted, were shaped and realised through acts and agencies of various kinds, as well as their socio-economic, cultural and political implications. The book explores the contexts and reasons that have led to the dispossession, deprivation and marginalisation of Adivasis. Through rich empirical data, this book presents an in-depth analysis of a contemporary crisis. It will be useful to scholars and researchers of political studies, South Asian politics, conflict studies, political sociology, cultural studies, sociology and social anthropology.

Book Perspectives in Human Growth Development and Maturation

Download or read book Perspectives in Human Growth Development and Maturation written by Parasmani Dasgupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One morning in 1969, out of the blue, I received a letter which both distressed and astonished me. It was from a Prof. S. R. Das in Calcutta, who requested me to accept, for eventual analysis, a mountain of anthropometric data he had accumulated, as he was ill and did not expect to survive to analyse it himself. The data provided the astonishment; twenty-two anthropometric characters recorded every six months or a year, over a period of 14 years, in a mixed longitudinal study of some 560 children, aged six months to twenty years. Most were in families with siblings also in the study, and every child was measured every time by S. R. Das himself. The archive was unique, combining the personal anthropometry of R. H. Whitehouse in the Harpenden Growth Study and the family approach of the Fels Growth Study. This was a study of which neither I, nor anyone of my acquaintance, had heard. Even in India, Prof. Das' work was scarcely known. It turned out Das was a scholarly man, quiet and unassuming, absolutely committed to his Sarsuna-Barisha Growth Study, just the obverse of the professional showman. Clearly this was not a request I could refuse, although I already had in hand enough projects to occupy Siva himself.

Book Recollections of an Indian Official 1928 1949

Download or read book Recollections of an Indian Official 1928 1949 written by Roger Bell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Bell (1905-1959) was a civil servant in British India during the most tumultuous period in its history, and was directly involved in not only the fascinating workings of the administration, but also its eventual transfer of power upon Indian Independence in 1947. His nearly two decades in Orissa and Madras Provinces saw the rise of Gandhi, the “flap” caused by World War II, corruption, riots, panther attacks, and Englishmen whose eccentricities were only exceeded by those of the local Rajas and Maharajas. Bell’s handwritten memoirs lay forgotten for decades in a trunk in his family home in Tasmania until rediscovered by his daughter, Alexandra. They are finally published here, 56 years after his death (and 70 years after his Orissa District Gazetteer), providing a fascinating insight into this pivotal period of India’s history. Anybody with an interest in this time, the history of the British Empire, or simply good old-fashioned adventure, will certainly enjoy reading this eloquent and engaging first-hand account.

Book Proceedings of the World Anthropology Congress 2023 WAC 2023

Download or read book Proceedings of the World Anthropology Congress 2023 WAC 2023 written by Tulishree Pradhan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. The World Anthropology Congress 2023 intends to explore multiple avenues for global peace and harmony for sustainable development of humankind, particularly of the indigenous, Adivasi and tribal people of the world. It is now well understood that Anthropology as a discipline can lend a powerful voice to non-hegemonic and marginalized cultural perspectives on both Global Peace and Development for ensuring social justice to the tribal and autochthones people. Since Global Peace and Development are multi-layered processes and Anthropology promotes the tradition of multifaceted thinking that ranges from the local to the global and traverses the space in bet ween, the discipline can unveil new dimensions in promoting lasting peace and sustained human development. Further, accumulated scientific evidence proves that many non -violent societies co-existed peacefully as a norm throughout the prehistoric period of the human existence. This indicates that human co-existence and peace were not mere words, but concepts that are integral to the texts of Anthropology. Therefore, deliberations in this Congress will contribute to the processes of Peace and Development of human society at different levels. The proposed World Anthropology Congress 2023 will continue this line of enquiry by playing a crucial role in creating a more contemporary and relevant debate on indigeneity, social justice, and global peace.
