No book has yet provided an inside view of the development and character of New Public Management (NPM) in Scandinavia. Although there is a general perception that there is a clear-cut ‘Scandinavian’ model of public policy and management, this book offers a more nuanced interpretation, illuminating subtle distinctions in political, social and economic context which are significant in identifying receptive contexts for the adoption of modernization policies. Organized into three main themes in the modernization of the welfare state – management, governance and marketization – the contents revolve around unique empirical accounts, revealing distinctive Scandinavian characteristics of reform initiatives. The received wisdom may be a hesitant follower of the UK and the USA. But this book offers an alternative interpretation, revealing an edginess in certain Scandinavian settings, particularly in Sweden, which is a largely unrecognized. Without compromising the welfare state, it may be a bold frontrunner in the development of New Public Management.

When dealing with contracts, it all comes down to whether your organization wishes to be reactive or proactive: ** Does your organization focus on plugging holes after they have been seen and their effects have been felt? If your answer is "yes" you belong to a reactive organization. ** Does your company focus on finding holes before they leak and cause a disaster? If your answer is "yes" you belong to a proactive organization. It is a simple difference in execution, producing a drastic difference in outcome. This is the very essence of devising and implementing effective risk management strategies. The focus of this book is on organizations adopting a proactive mindset and attitude to contractual risk planning. In contract evaluation, preventative measures and safeguards are the best tools available. Once you have committed to an unduly onerous contract that has not been properly scrutinized, it is often too late to renegotiate. Remembering that you cannot "unring" the proverbial bell.
