Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 8,000 Canadian civilians were imprisoned during the First World War because of their ethnic ties to Germany, Austria-Hungary, and other enemy nations. Although not as well-known as the later internments of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, these incarcerations played a crucial role in shaping debates about Canadian citizenship, diversity, and loyalty. Tracing the evolution and consequences of Canadian government policy towards immigrants of enemy nationality, No Free Man is a nuanced work that acknowledges both the challenges faced by the Government of Canada as well as the experiences of internees and their families. Bohdan Kordan gives particular attention to the ways in which the political and legal status of enemy subjects configured the policy and practice of internment and how this process – magnified by the challenges of the war – affected the broader concerns of public order and national security. Placing the issue of internment within the wider context of community and belonging, Kordan further delves into the ways that wartime turbulence and anxieties shaped public attitudes towards the treatment of enemy aliens. He concludes that Canada’s leadership failed to protect immigrants of enemy origin during a period of intense suspicion, conflict, and crisis. Framed by questions about government rights, responsibilities, and obligations, and based on extensive archival research, No Free Man provides a systematic and thoughtful account of Canadian government policy towards enemy aliens during the First World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive encyclopedic reference guide to male and female serial killers from throughout world history. The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is the most comprehensive set of its kind in the history of true crime publishing. Written and compiled by Susan Hall, the four-volume set has more than 1600 entries of male and female serial killers from around the world. Defined by the FBI as a person who murders 3 or more people over a period of time with a hiatus of weeks or months between murders, serial killers have walked among us from the dawn of time as these books will demonstrate. While the entries to these volumes will continue to grow—the FBI estimates that there are at least fifty serial killers operating in the United States at any given time—The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is as complete as possible through the end of 2017. The series continues with Volume Two, E-L. The entries include El Loco Luis Alfredo Garavito, Happy Face Killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, Interstate Killer Larry Eyler, Godfather of Matamoros Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo, and Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo. You will find these killers and approximately 350 others in this second book in the series of The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.

Download or read book African Sorceress written by M.E. Skeel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Sorceress: War on the Sahel, is one woman’s fight against the evil Atlantic slave trade. It is based on an oral tradition story the author heard in Africa. It takes place in the 1600s in what is now Ghana. The heroine is Kisa, who we first meet in African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged. Her village is raided by slave traders who sell their captives to the Dutch slave masters in the infamous Elmina slave castle. Kisa trains to be a sorceress and a warrior and lead her people to victory against the slavers. In War on the Sahel, Kisa and her lover Kojo take the war beyond their village. They infiltrate the slave castle, lead a mutiny on a slave ship, take a Portuguese trading fort and build an army to fight the African slave traders who are supplying the Europeans. The action is fast-paced, the story is credible, exciting and imaginative and it’s a great way to learn a largely untold history. The story is heroic fantasy but wrapped within the fantasy are the facts of 17th century Africa and the damage the slave trade caused to the proud independent peoples represented in Kisa’s Army. We meet the tribes that make up her army of freed captives, representing many distinct cultures, languages, customs and spiritual traditions. These oral traditions were just as deep, rich and complex as those of cultures with written languages. What reviewers said about African Sorceress: A Warrior is Forged - “Skeel has done a fantastic job taking on such a huge and largely hidden topic.” - “A really original story, unlike anything I've read before. A lot of research must have gone into this book to weave so many threads of history, anthropology, and geography into the tale. Read it for fun or read it to learn about a part of history most of us have never heard of -- either way you'll enjoy it.” - “Skeel immerses you into the world of the Atlantic slave trade from a perspective that is rarely--if ever--told. Skeel masterfully balances being as informative as any historian while being as entertaining as the best storytellers”

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was called in to help determine whether McGowan, who had already been denied parole twice, should be released back into society. The chairman of the New Jersey parole board had formed a special investigations unit to look into the cases, and they asked me to consult on the McGowan case. #2 On April 19, 1973, Joan Angela D’Alessandro was selling cookies with her sister near their home in Hillsdale, New Jersey. She was seven years old. A car pulled into the first driveway on the right, on St. Nicholas Avenue, which intersected with Florence Street. She was empathetic right from the beginning. #3 When Joan did not come back right away, Rosemarie began to get worried. She didn’t want to alarm the children, so she tried to keep herself together. She eventually went out to look for Joan, and when she couldn’t find her, she called the police. #4 The search for Joan continued, and the priest from St. John the Baptist Church arrived at the house with a state trooper and a German shepherd. The dog cased the area around the McGowan house, but nothing was found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A formal training program with theoretical and practical components is essential for all emergency medical personnel involved in providing care for critically injured patients. Communication, effective first aid, and on time transportation to a health center play a major role in improving quality of care for critically injured patients. Using life experience examples, participants in the study emphasized the importance of each factor on the delivery of quality care for critically injured patients. Recommendations based on the study findings included two main categories. The first category illustrated recommendations to stakeholders, and the second category reflected recommendations for further study. Stakeholders in this study included healthcare leaders in Afghanistan, healthcare professionals involved in providing health care in Afghanistan, and local people in Afghanistan. The modified van Kaam method in the qualitative phenomenological study involved conducting semistructured interviews, which were audio-taped and transcribed. The rationale for using the phenomenological approach in the qualitative study was to describe in-depth experiences of health care professionals. Moustakas (1994) modified van Kaam method explored the lived experiences and perceptions of 17 doctors and nurses relating to emergency trauma care for critically injured patients. Data analysis revealed important factors that could enhance the quality of prehospital care for civilian casualties of landmine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) blast injuries in Afghanistan. The four major themes that emerged from participants responses to interview questions included communication, formal training for emergency medical personnel, transportation to a higher-level center, and quality of prehospital care.
