Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Telemann loves Nigella Lawson. Ahem... he loves the theatre. That's better. Book Musical Gentrification

  • Author : Petter Dyndahl
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-09-02
  • ISBN : 1000174743
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Musical Gentrification written by Petter Dyndahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical Gentrification is an exploration of the role of popular music in processes of socio-cultural inclusion and exclusion in a variety of contexts. Twelve chapters by international scholars reveal how cultural objects of relatively lower status, in this case popular musics, are made objects of acquisition by subjects or institutions of higher social status, thereby playing an important role in social elevation, mobility and distinction. The phenomenon of musical gentrification is approached from a variety of angles: theoretically, methodologically and with reference to a number of key issues in popular music, from class, gender and ethnicity to cultural consumption, activism, hegemony and musical agency. Drawing on a wide range of case studies, empirical examples and ethnographic data, this is a valuable study for scholars and researchers of Music Education, Ethnomusicology, Cultural Studies and Cultural Sociology. Book A word in a star Eit ord i ei stjerne bilingual edition English and Norwegian

Download or read book A word in a star Eit ord i ei stjerne bilingual edition English and Norwegian written by Hannie Rouweler and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bilingual translations ENGLISH into NORWEGIAN of poems by Hannie Rouweler. Translations by Jostein Sæbøe. Several themes. About a previous collection: "Lakes and Gardens contains an unusual richness of motives, ranging from family situations, childhood memories and landscape observations to passion, love, loss and loneliness. Despite these innumerable and varied glimpses from the life of a mature poet, there is no danger of disintegration of poetic style or character. All through the volume we are struck by the poet's ability to let her own distinctive features mould her visions into verses, features that are characterised by humour, sincerity, sometimes irony as well as a deep wonder at the small and big mysteries of life. The images and sceneries in many of the poems reveal the poet's practice as a painter. In the most intimate poems we sense the almost physical presence of the poet and at the same time we have a feeling that everyday words put on a deeper symbolic message." Jostein Sæbøe

Book Reinventing Childhood Nostalgia

Download or read book Reinventing Childhood Nostalgia written by Elisabeth Wesseling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Romantic-era concepts of childhood nostalgia have been understood as the desire to retrieve the ephemeral mindset of the child, this collection proposes that the emergence of digital media has altered this reflective gesture towards the past. No longer is childhood nostalgia reliant on individual memory. Rather, it is associated through contemporary convergence culture with the commodities of one's youth as they are recycled from one media platform to another. Essays in the volume's first section identify recurrent patterns in the recycling, adaptation, and remediation of children's toys and media, providing context for section two's exploration of childhood nostalgia in memorial practices. In these essays, the contributors suggest that childhood toys and media play a role in the construction of s the imagined communities (Benedict Anderson) that define nations and nationalism. Eschewing the dichotomy between restorative and reflexive nostalgia, the essays in section three address the ethics of nostalgia in terms of child agency and depictions of childhood. In a departure from the notion that childhood nostalgia is the exclusive prerogative of narrative fiction, section four looks for its traces in the child sciences. Pushing against nostalgia's persistent associations with wishful thinking, false memories, and distortion, this collection suggests nostalgia is never categorically good or bad in itself, but owes its benefits or defects to the ways in which it is brought to bear on the representation of children and childhood.

Book The Songs of Edvard Grieg

Download or read book The Songs of Edvard Grieg written by Beryl Foster and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive survey of Grieg's 180 songs, considering particularly questions and issues of performance. Edvard Grieg's 180 songs mirror his artistic and personal development more intimately than any of his other music, yet are still the least known part of his output. This definitive appraisal, now revised and updated, discusses every song, including those left only in manuscript and sketches at the composer's death, set against the background of his life and times. It also deals with the poetry set, often chosen to reflect his current situation, and the poets, several of whom, including great figures of the day such as Ibsen and Bjornson, were his friends and colleagues. Grieg frequently bemoaned poor translations and indifferent performances, and the various editions and translations, from first publication to the present day, are also discussed, together with his own ideas for interpretation. Musical examples and analysis are included to give a closer understanding of Grieg's word-setting and harmonic development, although their performance is always kept paramount. BERYL FOSTER is a graduate of London University and studied singing in Colchester and at the Royal College of Music. As well as all the usual repertoire, since 1980 she has made a particular study of the songs of Grieg and other Norwegian composers, giving recitals, lectures and workshops in Britain, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and China. She is also a private teacher andfestival adjudicator.
