Download or read book The Importance of Women s Status for Child Nutrition in Developing Countries written by Lisa C. Smith and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2003 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently the role of women's social status in determining their children's nutritional health went largely unnoticed. That is, until researchers began to ponder the Asian Enigma- the question of why malnutrition is much more prevalent among children in South Asia than in Sub-Saharan Africa, even though South Asia surpasses Sub-Saharan Africa in most of the principal determinants of child nutrition. This report uses data from 36 countries in three developing regions to establish empirically that women's status, defined as women's power relative to men's, is an important determinant of children's nutritional status. It finds that the pathways through which status influences child nutrition and the strength of that influence differ considerably from one region to another. Where women's status is low, this research proves unequivocally that policies to eradicate gender discrimination not only benefit women but also their children.
Download or read book Foodborne Pathogens written by Clive de W. Blackburn and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2002 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As trends in foodborne disease continue to rise, the effective identification and control of pathogens becomes ever more important for the food industry. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Foodborne pathogens provides an authoritative and practical guide to effective control measures and how they can be applied in practice to individual pathogens. Part One looks at general techniques in assessing and managing microbiological hazards. After a review of analytical methods, there are chapters on modelling pathogen behaviour and carrying out a risk assessment as the essential foundation for effective food safety management. The following chapters then look at good management practice in key stages in the supply chain, starting with farm production. There are chapters on hygienic plant design and sanitation, and safe process design and operation which provide the foundation for a discussion of what makes for effective HACCP systems implementation. There is also a chapter on safe practices for consumers and food handlers in the retail and catering sectors. This discussion of pathogen control then provides a context for Part Two which looks at what this means in practice for key pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Campylobacter. Each chapter discusses pathogen characteristics, detection methods and control procedures. Part Three then looks at non-bacterial hazards such as viruses and parasites, as well as emerging potential 'hazards' such as Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and the increasingly important area of chronic disease. Foodborne pathogens will be widely welcomed as an essential and authoritative guide to successful pathogen control in the food industry.
Download or read book Production and Packaging of Non Carbonated Fruit Juices and Fruit Beverages written by Philip R. Ashurst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period of about five years since the first edition of this book appeared, many changes have occurred in the fruit juice and beverage markets. The growth of markets has continued, blunted to some extent, no doubt, by the recession that has featured prominently in the economies of the major consuming nations. But perhaps the most significant area that has affected juices in particular is the issue of authenticity. Commercial scandals of substantial proportions have been seen on both sides of the Atlantic because of fraudulent practice. Major strides have been made in the development of techniques to detect and measure adulterants in the major juices. A contri bution to Chapter 1 describes one of the more important scientific techniques to have been developed as a routine test method to detect the addition of carbohydrates to juices. Another, and perhaps more welcome, development in non-carbonated beverages during the past few years is the rapid growth of sports drinks. Beverages based on glucose syrup have been popular for many years, and in some parts of the world isotonic products have long featured in the sports arena. A combination of benefits is now available from a wide range of preparations formulated and marketed as sports drinks and featuring widely in beverage markets world-wide. A new chapter reviews their formulation and performance characteristics. Another major trend in the area of fruit-containing non-carbonated bever ages is the highly successful marketing of ready-to-drink products.

Download or read book Ecology of Indonesian Papua Part Two written by Andrew J. Marshall and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of Papua provides a comprehensive review of current scientific knowledge on all aspects of the natural history of western (Indonesian) New Guinea. Designed for students of conservation, environmental workers, and academic researchers, it is a richly detailed text, dense with biogeographical data, historical reference, and fresh insight on this complicated and marvelous region. We hope it will serve to raise awareness of Papua on a global as well as local scale, and to catalyze effective conservation of its most precious natural assets. New Guinea is the largest and highest tropical island, and one of the last great wilderness areas remaining on Earth. Papua, the western half of New Guinea, is noteworthy for its equatorial glaciers, its vast forested floodplains, its imposing central mountain range, its Raja Ampat Archipelago, and its several hundred traditional forest-dwelling societies. One of the wildest places left in the world, Papua possesses extraordinary biological and cultural diversity. Today, Papua’s environment is under threat from growing outside pressures to exploit its expansive forests and to develop large plantations of oil palm and biofuels. It is important that Papua’s leadership balance economic development with good resource management, to ensure the long-term well-being of its culturally diverse populace.
