Längst nicht mehr das epochemachende Ereignis in der Geschichte der deutschen Nation, als das Ranke sie ein- und zugeordnet hatte, wird die Reformation heute zwischen Spätmittelalter und Frühmoderne verortet und bewusst in das europäische Beziehungsgeflecht eingebunden. Nichtsdestoweniger folgen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes unterschiedlichen Deutungsansätzen, interpretieren die Reformation des 16. Jahrhunderts aus dem Geist des 14. und vor allem des langen 15. Jahrhunderts, setzen sie in Bezug zum Wandel fürstlicher Herrschaft und der Entwicklung kommunaler Eigenständigkeiten, der Krise bürgerlichen Wertedenkens und wirtschaftlicher Umbrüche. Theologische Neubestimmungen und kirchliche Verfallserscheinungen werden vor dem Hintergrund einer langfristigen individuellen und kollektiven Emanzipation diskutiert - wobei mit der Betonung eines derartigen prozessualen historischen Kontinuums eine Änderung der Sprachregelung einhergeht, die die Reformation zu einer Reformation werden lässt.

It is only possible to recognize and evaluate material culture in connection with human thought and behavior. The material world depends on the immaterial one, and vice versa. Neither sphere can exist without the other. In historical research, however, such contexts have not been considered regularly. In particular, the inter-connections between emotions and material culture have not been taken sufficiently into account in research. This was the reason for the "Institut fur Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit" to organize a round-table-discussion on "Emotions and Material Culture" and to publish its proceedings. The volume contains eleven contributions by specialists from eight countries. They show various possibilities to contextualize the material world and emotional behavior. They may be seen as a first step towards a "material emotionology" of the past. The complex results are intended to serve as a further impetus towards the systematic and comparative research into "emotional communities" and their material life in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

The contributions, written by a group of international specialists in Western, Byzantine, Islamic and Jewish Art, are committed to a comparative and transcultural approach. The authors reflect upon the different strategies of »clothing« sacred texts with precious materials and elaborate forms. They show how the pretypographic cultures of the Middle Ages used book ornaments as media for building a close relation between the divine words and their human audience. By exploring how art shapes the religious practice of books, and how the religious use of books shapes the evolution of artistic practices this book contributes to a new understanding of the deep nexus between sacred scripture and art.

Book excerpt: Zealots for souls draws attention to the impact of the Observant reforms within the Order of Preachers, and ambitiously stirs up a broad scope of questions pertaining to the institutional narratives produced within the order between c. 1388 and 1517. Through the narratives and the forms of remembrance they fostered, the author traces the development of contemporary characteristics of the Dominican self-understanding. The book shows the fluid boundaries between the genres (order chronicles, convent chronicles, collective biographies), highlights the interplay between the narrative and the intended audience, addresses the complex question of authorship, and assesses the indebtedness of 'modern' (printed) narratives to older chronicles or biographical collections. The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations.

The twentieth century was marked by the prolonged conflicts and eventually peace between Yugoslavia, Albania and Italy. Today the Adriatic is a region increasingly integrated into the European Union, experiencing a new era of cooperation following the dramatic collapse of Yugoslavia. Across centuries, this book illustrates the rich cultural and artistic heritage of diverse civilizations as they left their mark on the cities, shores and states of the Adriatic.
