Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents commuting as a new paradigm in mobility studies in the context of global south. It delves into suburban train commuting in Eastern India. The book interprets commuting not only as a means to attend work but also as a process producing kinetic event-space infused with different mobile practices, which is not determined by their locational fixity, rather can be cognized. It analyses the role of suburban train commuting in the metropolitan expansion of Kolkata, and the transformation of rural space into urban. The significant contribution of the book lies in explaining commuters’ experiencescape and the production of spatial fluidity in time capsule through commuting. It also explores the subjective reality of gendered commuting. The book uses a trans-disciplinary research design, blending quantitative and ethnographic research methods. The area selected for the empirical research is the Howrah-Bardhaman Main Railway Line (108 km), the first suburban railway line in Eastern India. Commuters originating from three adjacent districts of Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah took part in this research. Besides the commuters, non-commuting passengers and hawkers in the train were also interviewed to understand the diverse perceptions of the process of commuting. This book may be considered as a reference book for mobility studies, transport studies, urban geography and regional planning.

Book Variations of Suburbanism

Download or read book Variations of Suburbanism written by Barbara Schönig and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered to be sub-ordinated and sub-prime to the city, sub-urban areas receive little attention by researchers and designers. However, it ́s the rapidly growing areas outside the central cities that pose the biggest questions of the urban millennium: How can the scattered patchwork of urban areas and social spaces linked by networks of highways and public transportation function as a sustainable and livable urban environment? Answering this question requires understanding suburban spaces as heterogeneous urban areas with distinct local characteristics, qualities, and problems. Following this path, Variations of Suburbanism explores formation, characteristics, and trends of suburban areas all over the world. It provides insights on common features and differences of suburban governance, design, and infrastructure and discusses strategies to understand and design suburban areas in an increasingly sub-urbanizing world.

Book The Bungalow in Twentieth Century India

Download or read book The Bungalow in Twentieth Century India written by Madhavi Desai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary era of this study - the twentieth century - symbolizes the peak of the colonial rule and its total decline, as well as the rise of the new nation state of India. The processes that have been labeled 'westernization' and 'modernization' radically changed middle-class Indian life during the century. This book describes and explains the various technological, political and social developments that shaped one building type - the bungalow - contemporaneous to the development of modern Indian history during the period of British rule and its subsequent aftermath. Drawing on their own physical and photographic documentation, and building on previous work by Anthony King and the Desais, the authors show the evolution of the bungalow's architecture from a one storey building with a verandah to the assortment of house-forms and their regional variants that are derived from the bungalow. Moreover, the study correlates changes in society with architectural consequences in the plans and aesthetics of the bungalow. It also examines more generally what it meant to be modern in Indian society as the twentieth century evolved.

Book The Rural Urban Nexus in India s Economic Transformation

Download or read book The Rural Urban Nexus in India s Economic Transformation written by Tsukasa Mizushima and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyzes the transformation of Indian economy taking into account historical changes and present dynamics of the rural-urban nexus. India has recently experienced a period as a high-performing economy, with the great improvement of indices of human development, including literacy rates, life expectancy, child mortality rates and others. In contrast to this bright outlook, features such as the retarded growth of women’s average height, the noticeable gap between male and female population, the overwhelming proportion of informal employment in the manufacturing sector, or increasing pollution overshadow India’s future, in some cases pose a threat to lifestyle and environment. Examining the rural–urban nexus where the new transformative dynamics of Indian socio-economy is most conspicuous, the contributors to this book shed light on the actual changes taking place at the bottom of Indian society through regional comparisons and spatial differentiation. The book offers unique perspectives on the topic produced mostly by Japanese scholars, including analysis of original data, that have hitherto been unavailable and inaccessible to an international audience. As the first book published on the rural–urban nexus in India, this book will be of interest to researchers studying South Asian History, Economics, Politics, Geography, Sociology and Anthropology, Development Studies and Economic History.

Book Development Policy and Administration

Download or read book Development Policy and Administration written by Dr. Alok Verma and published by K.K. Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development administration is concerned with plans, policies, programmes and projects which focus on nation building and socio-economic development. It aims to achieve socio-economic goals through the talents and expertise of bureaucrats. Development administration focuses on the results to be achieved rather than the traditionalist view of strict adherence to rules and hierarchy. Strict adherence to rules creates rigidness, delay and procrastination. The essence of development administration is to bring about change through integrated, organised and properly directed governmental action. In the recent past, the governments in most of the developing nations have shifted their focus on development by means of planned change and people’s participation. With this shift of administrative concern towards developmental objectives the researchers and practitioners of Public Administration have been forced to conceptualise the developmental situation and to bridge the gaps in the administrative theory. The growing welfare functions of the government have brought into the limelight the limitations of the traditional theory of administration. The essence of administration in the present conditions lies in its capacity to bring about change in the structure and behaviour of different administrative institutions, to develop an acceptance for the change and to create a system that can sustain change and improve the capacity of institutions to change. All this calls for renewed efforts on the part of institutions engaged in the tasks of development. Thus development administration as an area of study and as means to realise developmental goals assumes importance. This book contains plenty of substance for scholars, but the writing has the verve and clarity to seize and entertain the general reader as well. Contents: • Role of NGOs and Voluntary Organisations • Economic Policy in India Since Independence • Local Self Government: Meaning, Nature and Scope • Concept of Rural Development • Centralization and Decentralization • Population, Urban Environment and Health in India

Book Rethinking the Local in Indian History

Download or read book Rethinking the Local in Indian History written by Kaustubh Mani Sengupta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks at the concept of the ‘local’ in Indian history. Through a case study of Bengal, it studies how worldwide currents—be it colonial governance, pedagogic practices or intellectual rhythms—simultaneously inform and interact with particular local idioms to produce variegated histories of a region. It examines the processes through which the idea of the ‘local’ gets constituted in different spatial entities such as the frontier province of the Jangal Mahal, the Sundarbans, the dry terrain of Birbhum-Bankura-Purulia and the urban spaces of Calcutta and other small towns. The volume further discusses the various administrative as well as amateur representations of these settings to chart out the ways through which certain spaces get associated with a particular image or history. The chapters in the volume explore a variety of themes—textual representations of the region, epistemic practices and educational policies, as well as administrative manoeuvres and governmental practices which helped the state in mapping its people. An important contribution in the study of Indian history, this interdisciplinary work will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of science and technology studies, history, sociology and social anthropology and South Asian studies.

They are characterized by open swathes of land with few homes or other buildings. The population density in rural areas is very low. Urban areas are densely populated areas that include cities and towns. They have a high population density and are characterized by a large number of buildings, infrastructure, and services. Peri-urban areas are located on the outskirts of cities and towns. They are characterized by a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial land uses. Peri-urban areas have a lower population density than urban areas but higher than rural areas. As a nation in constant evolution, India's urban centers are rapidly expanding, while its rural heartlands remain rooted in age-old traditions. Peri-urban regions act as vital connectors between these two worlds. In this book, we embark on a journey through the bustling streets of metropolises, the tranquil simplicity of villages, and the transitional zones that bridge these realms. Analysing the economic structures in urban, peri urban, and rural India, discussing key industries, employment and income patterns, and economic disparities and related issues between these regions is the main purpose of this compilation. The other purpose of the book is to explore the environmental challenges faced by different regions, such as pollution in urban areas, agricultural practices in rural areas, and the impact of development on suburban landscapes along with health care, education infrastructures, and other essential services and challenges faced by diverse populations. The book also discusses the potential future scenarios for urban, peri-urban, and rural India, considering factors like technological advancements, demographic shifts, and global influences. Ultimately, the purpose of the book may be a combination of these elements, aiming to provide a comprehensive and anuanced exploration of the varied landscapes and communities within India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Asian urban landscapes, men are everywhere. And yet we do not seem to know very much about precisely what men do in the city as men. How do men experience gender in city spaces? What are the interactional dynamics between different groups of men on city streets? How do men adjudicate between good and bad conduct in urban spaces? Through ethnographic descriptions of copresence on public transport in Kolkata, India, this book brings into sight the gendered logics of cooperation and everyday morality through which masculinities take up space in cities. It follows the labor geographies of auto-rickshaw and taxi operators and their interactions with traffic police and commuters to argue that the gendered fabric of urban life needs to be understood as a product of situational forms of cooperation between different social groups. Such an orientation sheds light on the part played by everyday morality and provisional support in upholding male privilege in the city.
