Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a modern take on the subject of the tribes and other socio-ethnic groups that inhabit Pakistan within the wider academic framework in the field of social sciences. While there has already been work carried out on the Pashtun and Afghan tribal territories and peoples, this text describes in detail the tribal societies of the whole of Pakistan–their origins, history, social profile and administrative structure. It also discusses these issues within the context of the areas’ geostrategic significance, historical processes, social ideology and institutional structure. The narrative promotes an understanding of the disruptive effects of external and internal factors and the distortions caused in these societies by the introduction of institutional, legal, political and social reforms which failed to take into account their deep-seated cultural sensitivities. It utilizes a wide variety of sources—both modern and old–to present a concise work on an extremely complex and detailed topic dealing with caste, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and tribal enmities and affinities. The book contains maps of the areas along with brief geo-specific descriptions to acquaint the reader with the terrain and topography of the region, which play an important role in the lives of these societies.

Book Ethnic Subnationalist Insurgencies in South Asia

Download or read book Ethnic Subnationalist Insurgencies in South Asia written by Jugdep S. Chima and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a micro-historical analysis of the emergence and contemporary dynamics of recent ethnic sub-nationalist insurgencies in South Asia. Using comparative case studies, it discusses the causes of each insurgency, analyses the trajectory and dynamics of each including attempts at resolution, and highlights the wider theories of ethno-nationalist insurgency and mobilization. Bringing together an international group of contributors, the book covers insurgencies in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. It questions why ethnic sub-nationalist insurgencies occurred at particular points in time and not at others, and explores the comparative trajectories of these movements. The book goes on to discern reappearing patterns of conflict escalation/de-escalation through the method of comparative process-tracing. It argues that while identity is a necessary factor for insurgency, it is not a sufficient one. Instead, ethnic mobilization and insurgency only emerge when it is activated by tension emerging from political competition between ethnic and central state elites. These elite-led dynamics, when combined with favourable socio-economic and political conditions, make the ethnic masses primed to accept the often symbolically-rich appeals from their leaders to mobilize against the central state. Providing an important study on ethno-nationalist insurgencies in South Asia, the book will be of interest to those working in the fields of South Asian Politics, Security Studies and Ethnic Conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossils allow us to picture the forms of life that inhabited the earth eons ago. But we long to know more: how did these animals actually behave? We are fascinated by the daily lives of our fellow creatures—how they reproduce and raise their young, how they hunt their prey or elude their predators, and more. What would it be like to see prehistoric animals as they lived and breathed? From dinosaurs fighting to their deaths to elephant-sized burrowing ground sloths, this book takes readers on a global journey deep into the earth’s past. Locked in Time showcases fifty of the most astonishing fossils ever found, brought together in five fascinating chapters that offer an unprecedented glimpse at the real-life behaviors of prehistoric animals. Dean R. Lomax examines the extraordinary direct evidence of fossils captured in the midst of everyday action, such as dinosaurs sitting on their eggs like birds, Jurassic flies preserved while mating, a T. rex infected by parasites. Each fossil, he reveals, tells a unique story about prehistoric life. Many recall behaviors typical of animals familiar to us today, evoking the chain of evolution that links all living things to their distant ancestors. Locked in Time allows us to see that fossils are not just inanimate objects: they can record the life stories of creatures as fully alive as any today. Striking and scientifically rigorous illustrations by renowned paleoartist Bob Nicholls bring these breathtaking moments to life.

Book Mapping of Earthquake Prone Areas Earthquake and its assessment

Download or read book Mapping of Earthquake Prone Areas Earthquake and its assessment written by Hafiz Adnan Ahmad Baig and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan and its neighboring counties contain all recognized kinds of most important plate boundaries as well as important dynamic intra-plate twists. Understanding the tectonics in this multifaceted area has been delayed by a relative lack of data and the difficulty of geologic and tectonic troubles. Even with the raise in the quantity of data in the past few years, the complications of the area need a multidirectional approach to cope with the geology and tectonics. Thus, in order to assemble huge, multidirectional data sets with varying superiority and resolution, this study takes on a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach to see at these troubles in a comprehensive and exceptional way. In this study, the authors compile maps of surficial tectonic features and deepness of the Moho, Pn velocities and Pg velocities for Pakistan and explain a cross-section means to work with data in a GIS format.
