Book Kodiak Management Area Herring Sac Roe Fishery Harvest Strategy for the 2020 Season

Download or read book Kodiak Management Area Herring Sac Roe Fishery Harvest Strategy for the 2020 Season written by Geoff Spalinger and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the harvest strategy for the 2020 Kodiak Management Area (KMA) commercial Pacific herring Clupea pallasii sac roe fishery and includes the 2020 guideline harvest levels (GHL) by section, management changes from previous years, and reporting and registration requirements. The 2020 KMA areawide GHLs is 1,485 tons, and individual GHLs have been established for 41 sections. Several regulation changes occurred at the January 2020 Board of Fisheries meeting in Kodiak. The season start date was changed to April 1, extending the season length from April 1 through June 30. The allocative management plan that assigned GHLs and sections by gear type was removed, and both gear types can now fish the same sections. Fishing periods were also changed so that purse seine permit holders and gillnet permit holders fish on alternating days. Purse seine fishing periods will remain the same, but gillnet fishing periods will be from noon on even-numbered days to noon on odd-numbered days. There will be 2 types of fishing periods in the KMA: those that fall under the "standard" fishing schedule established in regulation (5 AAC 27.510), and those that occur in sections managed by emergency order. In order to maximize roe quality and control harvest rates, fishing periods for the Village Islands/Uganik Bay and Danger Bay sections will be established by emergency order. Herring will be sampled for age, sex, weight, length, and maturity from purse seine test sets. Time and area restrictions may be used to target effort on large herring with the highest roe content.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to provide commercial salmon fishermen and buyers with information and guidelines used by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to manage the commercial salmon fisheries of the North Alaska Peninsula during 2020. The 2020 projected North Alaska Peninsula salmon harvest is 2,667,800 fish: 2,800 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 2,400,000 sockeye salmon O. nerka, 65,000 coho salmon O. kisutch, 50,000 pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and 150,000 chum salmon O. keta. The bulk of the salmon harvest is projected to occur in the Northern District between the Nelson Lagoon and Outer Port Heiden sections. The predominant gear types used in the North Alaska Peninsula are drift and set gillnets, though purse seine is a legal gear type in some areas. In 2020, salmon enumeration weirs on the Nelson, Bear, Sandy, and Ilnik rivers will be used to facilitate inseason escapement assessment and management.

Book Kodiak Management Area Herring Fisheries Annual Management Report 2014

Download or read book Kodiak Management Area Herring Fisheries Annual Management Report 2014 written by Geoff Spalinger and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents information concerning the commercial Pacific herring Clupea pallasii sac roe, food and bait, and subsistence fisheries in the Kodiak Management Area (KMA) in 2014. The KMA 2014 herring sac roe fishery was open from April 15 through June 30. Fishermen harvested 2,463 tons, compared to the preseason guideline harvest level (GHL) of 5,830 tons. Prior to May 1, the herring sac roe fishery is managed under an allocative harvest strategy that provides approximately 75% of the total Kodiak GHL to seine gear and approximately 25% to gillnet gear. From May 1 through June 30, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) may open any area with a remaining GHL to any gear group if the fishery is unlikely to result in overharvest. There was no effort by gillnetters in 2014 and purse seine fishermen harvested all 2,463 tons. Roe recovery percentages averaged 12.3% for the fishery. The total exvessel value of the fishery was an estimated $246,300. The harvest was composed primarily of age-9 herring. A combine fishery was conducted for the KMA herring food and bait fishery due to the small GHLs. Food and bait harvests totaled 124 tons with the entire harvest taken from the South Afognak District (117-ton GHL). The Eastside District (193-ton GHL) was opened; however, no herring were caught.
