Download or read book Kodiak Management Area Harvest Strategy for the 2020 Commercial Salmon Fishery written by James Vincent Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to provide commercial salmon fishermen and buyers with information and guidelines used by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to manage the commercial salmon fisheries of the North Alaska Peninsula during 2020. The 2020 projected North Alaska Peninsula salmon harvest is 2,667,800 fish: 2,800 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 2,400,000 sockeye salmon O. nerka, 65,000 coho salmon O. kisutch, 50,000 pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and 150,000 chum salmon O. keta. The bulk of the salmon harvest is projected to occur in the Northern District between the Nelson Lagoon and Outer Port Heiden sections. The predominant gear types used in the North Alaska Peninsula are drift and set gillnets, though purse seine is a legal gear type in some areas. In 2020, salmon enumeration weirs on the Nelson, Bear, Sandy, and Ilnik rivers will be used to facilitate inseason escapement assessment and management.

Book Kodiak Management Area Harvest Strategy for the 2023 Commercial Salmon Fishery

Download or read book Kodiak Management Area Harvest Strategy for the 2023 Commercial Salmon Fishery written by James Vincent Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) will manage the commercial salmon fisheries in the Kodiak Management Area (KMA) to promote maximum sustained yield for future KMA salmon returns by achieving salmon escapement goals and providing opportunity to harvest salmon in excess of those goals. ADF&G will attempt to provide for orderly fisheries while maximizing harvest opportunities on the highest quality salmon. ADF&G will adhere to the biological and allocative requirements of the management plans adopted by the Alaska Board of Fisheries for the KMA. Management of the fisheries follows a general chronology based on the run timing of 4 commercially targeted salmon species: sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka, coho O. kisutch, pink O. gorbuscha, and chum salmon O. keta. The 2023 preseason forecasts a harvest of approximately 1,790,000 sockeye, 379,700 coho, 26,200,000 pink, and 456,800 chum salmon. Additionally, about 8,000 Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha could be harvested incidentally in fisheries targeting other salmon species. All fishing periods are established by emergency order. The initial sockeye salmon commercial test fishing period for the west side of Kodiak Island is tentatively scheduled for June 9 but may occur as early as June 1. A June 9 fishery opening is also planned for the Duck Bay, Izhut Bay, Inner Kitoi Bay, Outer Kitoi Bay Sections, and the Foul Bay and Waterfall Bay Special Harvest Areas. The initial commercial test fishing period in the Alitak District will be determined based on inseason indicators of run strength. On July 6, the initial weekly fishing period targeting pink salmon will be 105 hours (41⁄2 days) in length for Kodiak Archipelago sections, and the Mainland District fishing periods will be 57 hours in length.

Book Kodiak Management Area Harvest Strategy for the 2021 Commercial Salmon Fishery

Download or read book Kodiak Management Area Harvest Strategy for the 2021 Commercial Salmon Fishery written by James Vincent Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the harvest strategy for the 2021 Kodiak Management Area (KMA) commercial Pacific herring Clupea pallasii sac roe fishery and includes the 2021 guideline harvest levels (GHL) by section, management changes from previous years, and reporting and registration requirements. The 2021 KMA areawide GHL is 7,895 tons, and individual GHLs have been established for 45 sections. Several regulation changes occurred at the January 2020 Board of Fisheries meeting in Kodiak. The season start date was changed to April 1, extending the season length from April 1 through June 30. The allocative management plan that assigned GHLs and sections by gear type was removed, and both gear types can now fish the same sections. Fishing periods were also changed so that purse seine permit holders and gillnet permit holders fish on alternating days. Purse seine fishing periods will remain the same, but gillnet fishing periods will be from noon on even-numbered days to noon on odd-numbered days. The only fishing periods will be those that fall under the "standard" fishing schedule established in regulation (5 AAC 27.510). Due to monitoring constraints, ADF&G will not actively manage sections for roe quality on the grounds by emergency order in 2021. All commercial fishery participants are urged to check with their buyer to determine what roe recovery and size limits will be marketable.
