Book excerpt: Škocjanske jame imajo bogato zgodovino. V tej knjigi je obravnavan le sorazmerno kratek čas med obema svetovnima vojnama, ko je Avstrija območje predala Italiji. Večji del Škocjanskih jam je bil raziskan pred letom 1914, zato je bil glavni cilj jamo razviti v turistično znamenitost. Jame so obiskovali že prej, a v 20. in 30. letih so si prizadevali urediti turistične poti skoz jame, z novimi mostovi in stezami, a tudi novim predorom do površja. Da bi vse to uskladili z italijanskimi zakoni, je povzročalo težave, zato so z odprtjem odlašali do leta 1923. Ob tem so jame še dodatno raziskali, premerili in o njih objavili sveže znanstvene razprave. Poročali so tudi o malo poznani usodni nesreči. Skozi celotno obdobje so posamezni vodniki, raziskovalci in upravniki napisali zelo človeško in razburljivo zgodbo. Kar knjigo dela še posebej pomembno, je izjemen prispevek italijanskih arhivov in zgodovinarjev.

Nekateri, denimo Darwin ali Freud, so svet celo spremenili, toda večinoma so imeli le neizstopajoče normalno življenje, med katerim so tudi raziskovali, preučevali ali pisali o jamah. To so tista življenja, o katerih je težko najti kaj več. V knjigi je 4634 gesel, ki vsebujejo podatke iz rojstnih listov, osmrtnic, neobjavljenih pisem in omembe drugih ljudi. Šele ta širši pogled iz njih naredi prave ljudi. V nekaterih primerih je bilo njihovo zanimanje za jame del njihovega poklicnega življenja. V mnogih drugih le spodbuda in sprostitev v sicer napornem življenju. Toda v vsakem primeru so ista oseba in isti možgani uživali oboje; in oboje ju je osebnostno izoblikovalo. Razumemo jih lahko le s pomočjo tukaj zbranih bibliografskih virov.

This is especially true in understanding the ritual use of caves, when the less tangible aspects of these environments would have been fundamental to the practices taking place within them. Between Worlds explores new theoretical frameworks that examine the agency of these enduring 'natural' places and the complex interplay between environment, taphonomy and human activity. It also showcases the application of innovative technologies, such as 3D laser-scanning and acoustic modelling, which provide new and exciting ways of capturing the experiential qualities of these enigmatic sites. Together, these developments offer more nuanced understandings of the role of caves in prehistoric ritual, and allow for more effective communication, management and presentation of cave archaeology to a wide range of audiences.
