The first International Conference on 'Innovation through Knowledge Transfer: Research with Impact', InnovationKT'09, held in Kingston, London, UK, provided a rare and welcome opportunity to share some of the successes of knowledge transfer. The conference attracted 150 delegates and featured 42 oral presentations. This volume, representing the proceedings of the conference, contains 35 papers based on selected conference presentations. The first InnovationKT conference was unique in gathering such a tremendous range of knowledge transfer experience and expertise. Is the flow of information that is necessary to create, make, sell, and use superior products and services as effective and efficient as it can be? In November 1984, knowledge transfer experts representing an extraordinary range of experience and interests met in Washington, D.C. to take a fresh, practical look at the issues, with a view to producing recommendations for strengthening knowledge transfer planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Roundtable was designed to examine the issues related to health, social, and behavioral research. The focus was not on industrial technology, such as that produced in the Department of Defense or the Department of Energy. But the discussions were intended to extend beyond the subjects addressed. Representatives from the public and private sectors and many agencies and departments at the Federal, State, and local levels were urged to apply the discussions to all areas of knowledge transfer. The panels followed a logical sequence. The first (Research and Development) focused on the generation of potentially usable knowledge. The second (Assessment) focused on how to assess the actual usability of research results. The third (Dissemination) focused on one way of "getting the word out," i.e., by disseminating information. The fourth (Technical Assistance) focused on another way of sharing knowledge, i.e., by providing expert assistance, peer-to-peer assistance, conferences, workshops, and the like. The final panel (Reporting and Evaluation) discussed how to evaluate all of this and how to report to various groups, including Congress and the many users. Two Reactor panels concluded the Workshop, giving consumers and researchers an opportunity to react to what had gone on in the previous presentations and discussions.

Featuring world-class invited speakers and contributions from a range of backgrounds and countries, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate, share and discuss the impact of university-business interaction through knowledge transfer in all its forms. There were two main motivations in initiating the Innovation through Knowledge Transfer series. The first aim was to provide the chance for publication on a subject where few opportunities exist already. The second motivation was to foster the development of a community from the diverse range of individuals practicing knowledge transfer. It is becoming clear that the delegates of the conference are drawn from a diverse community of practice. InnovationKT’2010 has succeeded in bringing together contributions from both the academic and practitioner sections of the knowledge transfer community. The programme contained seven invited keynote talks, 40 oral presentations grouped into eight sessions, and one interactive workshop. The proceedings contain 29 chapters drawn from this material. There were 91 registered delegates drawn from 10 countries of the world. The field of knowledge transfer is still immature, but these proceedings demonstrate that InnovationKT conference is making a significant contribution to its academic development.
