Book Knowledge Index for Measuring Knowledge and Adopting Scientific Methods in Treatment of Reproductive Problems of Dairy Animals

Download or read book Knowledge Index for Measuring Knowledge and Adopting Scientific Methods in Treatment of Reproductive Problems of Dairy Animals written by M. S. Meena and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive problems among dairy animals are one of the major causes of loss in dairy sector. These problems can be tackled by imparting appropriate knowledge to the livestock owners. An attempt was made to measure the knowledge of livestock owners by developing a knowledge test on reproductive problems of dairy animals. The study was undertaken in Karnal district of Haryana state, India. Data were solicited from 300 livestock farmers who had at least one milch animal at the time of investigation. In addition to developing schedules for socio-economic variables, a knowledge test was also developed for measuring knowledge construct. Data were solicited on scientific treatment of affected dairy animals and 59.54% knowledge was observed on reproductive traits. Study indicates that majority of livestock farmers adopted scientific methods for treating their animals. Respondents' age, extension contact and milk production were positively and significantly correlated with knowledge. Therefore, imparting quality practical training and periodical assessment of performance of lay inseminators for improving their skills and knowledge regarding estrus detection and insemination needs to be emphasized. Extension machinery has to be an ideal bridge between research/development institutions and dairy farmers for their catalytic effect (Meena & Malik, 2009). Extensive awareness programs are needed for inculcating scientific outlook among livestock farmers on these complex problems. Easy accessibility of veterinary hospital at village level can reduce the adoption of indigenous technical knowledge in treatment of these complex problems.

Book Common Reproductive Problems In Bovines And Canines

Download or read book Common Reproductive Problems In Bovines And Canines written by Harendra Kumar and published by New India Publishing Agency. This book was released on 2011 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is written in a very simple and lucid manner so that every person can read and understand the common reproductive problems in dairy as well as pet animals. The manual is written for field veterinarians, the persons engaged in dairy reproductive health control programme, officers and students. This handy manual will provide latest information related to diagnostics as well as therapeutics of most commonly gynaecological disorders like anestrus, repeat breeding, retention of placenta, prolapsed of cervix/uterus, abortion, endometritis, metritis, uterine torsion etc. in cows and buffaloes. Similarly, an attempt has been made to include most commonly found reproductive disorders and their management in bitches. In our opinion, this manual will be extremely helpful to all persons who are directly and indirectly engaged in handling of gynaecological problems in animals as we have put our knowledge and experiences gained during last several years at polyclinic, dairy farms as well as in the fields/farmer’s door. At last we do believe that any one can enrich their knowledge on the problems addressed in this manual and can face any challenge very easily and confidently.

The chapter focusses on parturition and uterine health, the importance of the post-partum environment and the role of oestrus, as well as methods of establishing pregnancy and the effect of heat stress on cows' fertility. The second chapter considers recent developments in automated monitoring of livestock fertility and pregnancy, focussing on its implementation in dairy cattle production. The chapter explores the physiological basics of the reproductive cycle in dairy cattle and the use of artificial intelligence to monitor and report changes in animal behaviour. The third chapter reviews progress in understanding the role of genetics in addressing the decline in fertility rates in dairy cattle. The chapter discusses strategies to improve the reproductive performance of dairy cattle, including the use of different breeds, measures of fertility and genomic data. The final chapter reviews best practices to detect reproductive problems and limitations in dairy cattle. The chapter identifies key areas which are known to limit performance and provides strategies which can be implemented to optimise reproductive performance and maximise animal health.
