Book Building Knowledge in Architecture

Download or read book Building Knowledge in Architecture written by Richard Foqué and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Foqué establishes a general design theory based on the axioms of pragmatic thinking, a crucial unity between experience and the process of learning, and between conceptual thought and situational consciousness. Building Knowledge develops a theoretical framework and practical instrumentation to establish a knowledge base for the discipline of architecture. Part one of the book presents design methods as a third way of investigating reality apart from scientific methods or the conception of art. By describing thescience-philosophical context, Foqué extensively analyses the nature of design activity and the design process, its inherent characteristics, and the differences between science and art. As such, it is argued that design processes have a research dimension an sich, which are essentially contextual and action driven. Foqué offers an integrated and comprehensive perspective to understand design activity both from an epistemological and practical standpoint. This results in an expanded discourse about the true nature of architectural design processes. Within this theoretical framework, part two explains how case study research is a primordial means to establish a knowledge base for the discipline and profession of architecture. From this premise, Foqué compares case study research in law, medicine and business administration and develops a practical and comprehensive approach to case studies in architecture. The methodology offers a solid and general framework wherein a consistent body of knowledge regarding architectural design processes can be generated. This promotes deeper insight in the complex relationship between context, product and process, which governs every design process on the one hand, and between the several stakeholders involved on the other hand."--Publisher.

Book excerpt: Teaching Landscape: The Studio Experience gathers a range of expert contributions from across the world to collect best-practice examples of teaching landscape architecture studios. This is the companion volume to The Routledge Handbook of Teaching Landscape in the two-part set initiated by the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS). Design and planning studio as a form of teaching lies at the core of landscape architecture education. They can simulate a professional situation and promote the development of creative solutions based on gaining an understanding of a specific project site or planning area; address existing challenges in urban and rural landscapes; and often involve interaction with real stakeholders, such as municipality representatives, residents or activist groups. In this way, studio-based planning and design teaching brings students closer to everyday practice, helping to prepare them to create real-world, problem-solving designs. This book provides fully illustrated examples of studios from over twenty different schools of landscape architecture worldwide. With over 250 full colour images, it is an essential resource for instructors and academics across the landscape discipline, for the continuously evolving process of discussing and generating improved teaching modes in landscape architecture.

Along with eight other disciplines, from domains as diverse as planning and design, the arts and humanities as well as the social and natural sciences, they are all fields of importance to the theory and practice of landscape architecture. In the context of the EU funded LE:NOTRE Project, carried out under the auspices of ECLAS, the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools, international experts from a wide range of related fields were asked to reflect, each from their own perspective, on the interface between their discipline and landscape architecture. The resulting insights presented in this book represent an important contribution to the development the discipline of landscape architecture, as well as suggesting new ways in which future collaboration can help to create a greater interdisciplinary richness at a time when the awareness of the importance of the landscape is growing across a wide range of disciplines. Exploring the Boundaries of Landscape Architecture is the first systematic attempt to explore the territory at the boundaries of landscape architecture. It addresses academics, professionals and students, not just from landscape architecture but also from its neighbouring discipline, all of whom will benefit from a better understanding their areas of shared interest and the chance to develop a common language with which to converse.

Book The Big Asian Book of Landscape Architecture

Download or read book The Big Asian Book of Landscape Architecture written by Heike Rahmann and published by Jovis Verlag. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides one of the first comprehensive discussions of contemporary landscape architecture practice across the Asian region. Bringing together established designers, writers, and thinkers with those of the new generation, Jillian Walliss and Heike Rahmann explore what it means to design, do business, and think about nature, space, and urbanism with an Asian sensibility. Through a tripartite structure of Continuum, Interruption, and Speed, The Big Asian Book of Landscape Architecture develops ways for conceiving design around these three characteristics that simultaneously influence an Asian practice. A dynamic structure allows readers to dip into content, rather than progress in a linear manner. Each section begins with a positioning essay, which offer theoretical, cultural, and political contextualisation for the more focused academic writing, shorter reflections, practice interviews, photo essays and design projects which are interwoven in a unique graphic design. Featuring over eighty design projects, The Big Asian Book of Landscape Architecture's significance extends well beyond Asia, offering fresh perspectives for a field that has traditionally been dominated by North American and European influences.

Book Landscape Architecture as Storytelling

Download or read book Landscape Architecture as Storytelling written by Bob Scarfo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students, practitioners, and laypeople to a comfortable approach to learning landscape architectural design free of design jargon and derived from their existing knowledge. A step-by-step process has readers consider their knowledge of language as metaphorically related to basic design and landscape design. Through information delivery and questioning processes, readers build on what they already know, their tacit understanding of language as applied to problem solving and storytelling. Everyone is a storyteller. Taken one step at a time through a three-tiered analogy of language, basic design, and landscape design, readers learn the makeup and role of such design features as points, lines, planes, volumes and sequential volumetric spaces that make up their worlds. With that, in a sense, new world view, and numerous questions and examples, readers begin to see that they in fact daily read the environments in which they live, work, play, raise families, and grow old. Once they realize how they read their surroundings they are helped to recognize that they can build narratives into their surroundings. At that point the existence of authored landscape narratives finds readers understanding a design process that relies on the designer-as-author, landscape-as-text, and participant, user-as-reader. That process has the reader write a first- or second-person narrative, visually interpret the written narrative into a storyboard, and turn the storyboard into a final design, the physical makeup of which is read by those who participate in it.
