Book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students

Download or read book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC. Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding the purpose and use of EC, with the majority of respondents answering eight out of ten questions correctly. A chi-square analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between gender and attitudes towards EC. Data showed a significant relationship between gender and attitude about (1) whether the advanced provision of EC contributes to increased risky sexual behavior and (2) whether the use of EC is the females decision only. Regarding types of risky sexual behaviors, four behaviors were evaluated: sex under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, age of first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners within the past year, and frequency of use of protection with sexual partner. Overall, of those respondents who were sexually active, majority engaged in few risky sexual behaviors and appeared to participate in safe sexual practices (having few sexual partners and frequent use of protection).

This book was released on 2014 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to assess and evaluate sampled university students’ knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive. To collect data, a 29 item survey was developed and administered to students in sampled classrooms at Minnesota State University, Mankato campus regarding their knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors related to the Plan B emergency contraceptive; as well as demographic information. The findings of the study indicated there were some participants who have much knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive. However, findings also showed that there were a number of participants who lacked knowledge about the Plan B emergency contraceptive pill. Despite lacking knowledge, many students had strong attitudes about when Plan B emergency contraception should be used. Recommendations for further study includ conducting the study with students at other universities, and investigating if the use of Plan B has increased since it has become available over the counter for anyone at any age. Further, health education specialists can provide education on regular use of contraception and emergency contraception to students in high school so they have some knowledge before entering college.

Book Emergency Contraception

Download or read book Emergency Contraception written by Karina Linares and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Emergency contraceptive pills, or ECP, are proven to be a safe and effective method of preventing unintended pregnancy. However, use of the method is low. With 3 million unintended pregnancies in the U.S. each year, factors affecting ECP use, including awareness and knowledge, should be explored to increase usage. Objectives: 1) To assess the levels of awareness, knowledge, and use of ECP among the study population; and 2) to determine the significant demographic characteristics that play a role in ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Methods: An anonymous 20-question survey was completed by (n=157) adult female visitors of two Philadelphia Planned Parenthood health centers. The survey was designed to collect basic demographic information and to measure knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards ECP. Chi-square analyses, Fisher's exact tests, and logistic regression were used to examine factors that may predict ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Results: The majority of women (83.44%) expressed awareness of ECP. Women with some college education or greater were more likely to be aware of ECP than those with lower education levels. Women younger than 35 were more likely to have used ECP than those older than 35, as well as women who have had previous pregnancies. Contraceptive use was also associated with previous ECP use. For ECP knowledge, prior ECP use was a significant predictor. Conclusion: Although awareness of ECP is high, use and knowledge still vary in several population groups. More effort is needed to raise overall knowledge of ECP to those groups at risk of unintended pregnancy.

This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unintended pregnancy poses a major challenge to the reproductive health of young adults in developing countries. In Nigeria unintended and unprotected intercourse is the primary cause of unwanted pregnancy and induced abortions and subsequently leading to increased maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Post-secondary school students form an important high risk group for unplanned pregnancy in Nigeria and other developing countries. Similarly, a Nigeria community-based study of abortion prevalence found that one-third of women who obtained an abortion are adolescents. Emergency contraception, has the potential to significantly reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy and the consequent need for abortion.Emergency contraception (EC) is the contraception used by a woman after unprotected intercourse during her unsafe period. EC is needed when intercourse is unexpected and without prior contraceptive coverage.EC may be an effective way to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions. Several studies have shown low awareness and usage of EC amongst adolescents and women and this book wants to elucidate the reason behind poor awareness and practice of EC.

Book Emergency Contraceptive Pills and College Women

Download or read book Emergency Contraceptive Pills and College Women written by Heather A. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately half of the 6.4 million pregnancies occurring each year in the United States are unintended (Finer & Henshaw, 2006). Unintended pregnancies, defined as pregnancies not wanted at the time conception occurs, regardless of contraceptive use (Chandra, Martinez, Mosher, Abma, & Jones, 2005) can have serious repercussions on women, children, and society. For decades, women facing the possibility of an unintended pregnancy following unprotected intercourse, birth control method failure, or sexual assault, have had no choices outside of abortion. Since 1997 however, another option has become available to American women making unintended pregnancy decisions -- emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs). Research has indicated that widespread use of ECPs has the potential to prevent 1.5 million of the approximate 3 million unintended pregnancies occurring each year in the US, including as many as 700,000 pregnancies that now result in abortion (Trussell, Stewart, Guest, & Hatcher, 1992). Although 84% of American women have heard of ECPs, only 6% claim to have ever used them (Hoff, Miller, Barefoot, & Greene, 2003). Despite their effectiveness and the public's awareness of them, ECPs still remain underutilized in many high-risk populations. Explanations for this discrepancy are not readily available. In particular, young adult women attending college are at risk for unintended pregnancy yet we know little about their relationship with ECPs. Although extensive ECP use could have a profound effect on unintended pregnancy rates, we have limited information about the factors that influence a woman's decision to use ECPs. Furthermore, with the US Food and Drug Administration's approval of behind the counter status for the emergency contraceptive Plan B on August 24, 2006, one of the last major external hurdles for women accessing emergency contraceptive pills appears to have been removed. However, it is unknown whether prescription-free availability will be the final factor in women's predisposition to use ECPs or if other intrinsic factors, may in fact, override use. The purpose of this study was to determine the nature and extent of college women's knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, perceived social norms, and use related to emergency contraceptive pills. Additional goals included: using a conceptual framework to determine which social and behavioral constructs suggested by the contraceptive literature best predict intention to use ECPs and ECP use. Data were collected via an online survey designed by the lead author. A sample of 4,219 female students was drawn from a directory list of students enrolled at Oregon State University during the Spring Quarter of 2004. A total of 1718 women returned usable questionnaires. Key findings were that the majority of sexually active participants (68%, n = 871) had experienced a pregnancy scare in the past yet only 28.3% (n = 362) had ever used ECPs. Further, women had insufficient knowledge about ECPs in order to make informed decisions. Male partners were the most influential social reference in ECP decision-making. Although prescription-free access to ECPs is an historical milestone for reproductive health in the US, this policy change may not be the final step in ensuring that women access and use ECPs when they need them. Intrinsic factors including: knowledge that ECPs prevent pregnancy by interfering with ovulation, knowledge that ECPs are not a form of abortion, and confidence in accessing ECPs in time if needed seem to influence ECP use. In order for ECPs to impact unintended pregnancy rates to the extent research has demonstrated, strategies addressing these internal factors are warranted and must target both women and men.
