This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unintended pregnancy poses a major challenge to the reproductive health of young adults in developing countries. In Nigeria unintended and unprotected intercourse is the primary cause of unwanted pregnancy and induced abortions and subsequently leading to increased maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Post-secondary school students form an important high risk group for unplanned pregnancy in Nigeria and other developing countries. Similarly, a Nigeria community-based study of abortion prevalence found that one-third of women who obtained an abortion are adolescents. Emergency contraception, has the potential to significantly reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy and the consequent need for abortion.Emergency contraception (EC) is the contraception used by a woman after unprotected intercourse during her unsafe period. EC is needed when intercourse is unexpected and without prior contraceptive coverage.EC may be an effective way to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions. Several studies have shown low awareness and usage of EC amongst adolescents and women and this book wants to elucidate the reason behind poor awareness and practice of EC.

Book Emergency Contraception

Download or read book Emergency Contraception written by Karina Linares and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Emergency contraceptive pills, or ECP, are proven to be a safe and effective method of preventing unintended pregnancy. However, use of the method is low. With 3 million unintended pregnancies in the U.S. each year, factors affecting ECP use, including awareness and knowledge, should be explored to increase usage. Objectives: 1) To assess the levels of awareness, knowledge, and use of ECP among the study population; and 2) to determine the significant demographic characteristics that play a role in ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Methods: An anonymous 20-question survey was completed by (n=157) adult female visitors of two Philadelphia Planned Parenthood health centers. The survey was designed to collect basic demographic information and to measure knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards ECP. Chi-square analyses, Fisher's exact tests, and logistic regression were used to examine factors that may predict ECP awareness, use, and knowledge. Results: The majority of women (83.44%) expressed awareness of ECP. Women with some college education or greater were more likely to be aware of ECP than those with lower education levels. Women younger than 35 were more likely to have used ECP than those older than 35, as well as women who have had previous pregnancies. Contraceptive use was also associated with previous ECP use. For ECP knowledge, prior ECP use was a significant predictor. Conclusion: Although awareness of ECP is high, use and knowledge still vary in several population groups. More effort is needed to raise overall knowledge of ECP to those groups at risk of unintended pregnancy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills a major gap in the evidence base on adolescents and youth in India by bringing together research, policy critiques and programme analyses in an intersectoral and multidisciplinary way. With about 373 million persons between the ages of 10 and 24 years, India has the largest number of young people of any country in the world. While this large cohort presents an excellent opportunity to reap a rich demographic dividend, their potential can be realised only with intelligent investments, which create well nourished, healthy, appropriately educated and skilled youth. This volume is based on desk reviews and is complemented by discussions with experts in 4 key thematic areas: nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and livelihoods, overall focusing on the health and wellbeing of the young in India. Each chapter provides a comprehensive picture of the current situation in a focal theme and identifies significant gaps in information/data and programmes. In addition, it explores the scenario of building capacity for undertaking research on, and with adolescents, through a qualitative needs assessment. This timely volume provides a thorough overview of related research, policy and programmes for a wide group of social and behavioural scientists and public health experts interested in India’s young people.

Book Contraceptive Research and Development

Download or read book Contraceptive Research and Development written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-04 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "contraceptive revolution" of the 1960s and 1970s introduced totally new contraceptive options and launched an era of research and product development. Yet by the late 1980s, conditions had changed and improvements in contraceptive products, while very important in relation to improved oral contraceptives, IUDs, implants, and injectables, had become primarily incremental. Is it time for a second contraceptive revolution and how might it happen? Contraceptive Research and Development explores the frontiers of science where the contraceptives of the future are likely to be found and lays out criteria for deciding where to make the next R&D investments. The book comprehensively examines today's contraceptive needs, identifies "niches" in those needs that seem most readily translatable into market terms, and scrutinizes issues that shape the market: method side effects and contraceptive failure, the challenge of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and the implications of the "women's agenda." Contraceptive Research and Development analyzes the response of the pharmaceutical industry to current dynamics in regulation, liability, public opinion, and the economics of the health sector and offers an integrated set of recommendations for public- and private-sector action to meet a whole new generation of demand.
