Book Precipitation and Streamwater Chemistry in an Undisturbed Watershed in Southwest Alaska Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precipitation and Streamwater Chemistry in an Undisturbed Watershed in Southwest Alaska To understand the biogeochemical behavior of terrestrial ecosystems, a budgetary approach, which assesses inputs to and outputs from small water shed ecosystems, is often used. Lnvestigations into the control of inputs and outputs of elements have been made through intensive measurements of single watersheds. Paired watersheds are often used to measure land management impacts. Departures in water chemistry in the treatment water shed are attributed to the management activity. This approach has produced hypotheses for the understanding of specific situations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precipitation and Streamflow of a Colorado Front Range Watershed Spring peak flows resulting from snowmelt occur with considerable regularity. Data indicate that these peaks are caused by melting snow on the slopes of the water shed below 8, 300 feet. Snowmelt water from elevations above 8, 300 feet contributes less to peak discharge and more to the characteristically high May flows, which make up approximately 40 percent of the total yield annually. During summer, streamflow is almost entirely from ground-water reserve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Study reported herein is largely a response to discussions among ewpu members in 2005 and 2006 regarding the need for additional information on river ph in the watershed. Primary objectives include defining the spatial and temporal extent of high ph conditions and identifying sections of river that may contribute high ph water. The scope is broad scale and exploratory in nature, although findings may lead to more focused and detailed investigations. Results for the years 2007 through 2008 were reported in Bookter et al. Classification of a drainage system may be based upon various components of this morphological pattern. Horton (1945) devised one such classification based upon stream branching. His system was later modified by Strahler (1954, In the Horton Strahler system, streams which received no tributaries were called order 1 streams. When two order 1 streams meet they form an order 2 stream. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Data are to be obtained at selected locations, under present conditions, over as wide as possible a range of seasonal flow conditions. Monitoring would be continued during construction of the proposed resort facilities and access highway, and during subsequent operation of these facilities. Book excerpt: A classic of politics, murder, and espionage "Watershed has all the makings of a social thriller...In this novel about water and the struggle for a life free of injustice, the mix doesn't just work, it flows." — Alan Cheuse, National Public Radio "It’s hard . . . to imagine a novelist today with fresher eyes than Percival Everett."―Christopher Borrelli, Chicago Tribune On a windswept landscape somewhere north of Denver, Robert Hawks, a feisty and dangerously curious hydrologist, finds himself enmeshed in a fight over Native American treaty rights. What begins for Robert as a peaceful fishing interlude ends in murder and the disclosure of government secrets. Everett mines history for this one, focusing on the relationship between Native American activists and Black Panther groups who bonded over their shared enemies in the 1960s Civil Rights movement. Watershed is an excellent example of Percival Everett’s famed bitingly political narrative style.

Book New Strategies for America s Watersheds

Download or read book New Strategies for America s Watersheds written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergence of a toxic organism like pfisteria in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay has focused public attention on potential hazards in our water. More importantly, it has reminded us of the importance of the entire watershed to the health of any body of water and how political boundaries complicate watershed management. New Strategies for America's Watersheds provides a timely and comprehensive look at the rise of "watershed thinking" among scientists and policymakers and recommends ways to steer the nation toward improved watershed management. The volume defines important terms, identifies fundamental issues, and explores reasons why now is the time to bring watersheds to the forefront of ecosystem management. In a discussion of scale and scope, the committee examines how to expand the watershed from a topographic unit to a framework for integrating natural, social, and economic perspectives as they share the same geographic space. The volume discusses: Regional variations in climate, topography, demographics, institutions, land use, culture, and law. Roles and interaction of federal, state, and local agencies. Availability or lack of pertinent data. Options for financing. The committee identifies critical points in watershed planning to ensure appropriate stakeholder involvement and integration of science, policy, and environmental ethics.
