Book excerpt: Did you know that 40 per cent of all mammal species in this world are rodents. The skin of the Naked Mole Rat lacks the neurotransmitters that allow it to feel pain. The main difference between a hamster and a gerbil is that the former is nocturnal and the latter isnt. The capybara is the worlds largest rodent, weighing up to 80kg. The African pygmy mouse weighs only seven grams. KnowYour Rodent is an illustrated guide to twenty-three rodent species, which is at once fascinatingly informative and oddly humorous. Brilliantly distinctive drawings by up-and-coming illustrator Thibaud Hérem draw inspiration from such masters as Bruno Munari and Joelle Jolivet, and capture the essence of some of the weirdest and most wonderful creatures the planet has to offer. With a lightness of touch that will appeal to adults and children alike, this offbeat little volume brings together the marvels of nature and the marvels of beautiful design in a perfect little package.

Book excerpt: "Disney is so good at being good that it manifests an evil; so uniformly efficient and courteous, so dependably clean and conscientious, so unfailingly entertaining that it's unreal, and therefore is an agent of pure wickedness. . . . Disney isn't in the business of exploiting Nature so much as striving to improve upon it, constantly fine-tuning God's work." --from TEAM RODENT TEAM RODENT How Disney Devours America "Revulsion is good. Revulsion is healthy. Each of us has limits, unarticulated boundaries of taste and tolerance, and sometimes we forget where they are. Peep Land is here to remind us; a fixed compass point by which we can govern our private behavior. Because being grossed out is essential to the human experience; without a perceived depravity, we'd have nothing against which to gauge the advance or decline of culture; our art, our music, our cinema, our books. Without sleaze, the yardstick shrinks at both ends. Team Rodent doesn't believe in sleaze, however, nor in old-fashioned revulsion. Square in the middle is where it wants us all to be, dependable consumers with predictable attitudes. The message, never stated but avuncularly implied, is that America's values ought to reflect those of the Walt Disney Company, and not the other way around." BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Carl Hiaasen's Bad Monkey.

Book Rodent Bioacoustics

  • Author : Micheal L. Dent
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-08-28
  • ISBN : 3319924958
  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Rodent Bioacoustics written by Micheal L. Dent and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By far, the most widely used subjects in psychological and biological research today are rodents. Although rats and mice comprise the largest group of animals used in research, there are over 2,000 species and 27 families of rodents, living all over the world (except Antarctica) and thriving in many different habitat types. The vast environmental diversity that rodents face has led to numerous adaptations for communication, including vocalizing and hearing in both the sonic and ultrasonic ranges, effectively communicating in the open air and underground, and using vocalizations for coordinating sexual behavior, for mother-pup interactions, and for signaling an alarming situation to the group. Some rodent species have even developed foot drumming behaviors for communication. Comparative studies from around the globe, using both field and laboratory methodologies, reveal the vast differences in acoustic communication behavior across many rodent species. Some rodents are amenable to training and have been domesticated and bred purely for research purposes. Since the early 1900s, rats and mice have been indispensable to research programs around the world. Thus, much of what we know about hearing and vocalizations in rodents come from these two species tested in the laboratory. The sequencing of the mouse genome in 2002, followed by the rat genome in 2004, only increased the utility of these animals as research subjects since genetically engineered strains mimicking human diseases and disorders could be developed more easily. In the laboratory, rats and mice are used as models for human communication and hearing disorders and are involved in studies on hearing loss and prevention, hormones, and auditory plasticity, to name a few. We know that certain strains of mice retain hearing better than others throughout their lifespan, and about the genes involved in those differences. We know about the effects of noise, hormones, sex, aging, and circadian rhythms on hearing in mice and other rodents. We also know about normal hearing in many families of rodents, including the perception of simple and complex stimuli and the anatomy and physiology of hearing and sound localization. The importance of acoustic communication to these animals, as well as the significance of these mammals to biomedical research, are summarized in the chapters.

More than 400 illustrations demonstrate key concepts related to radiographic interpretation, relevant anatomy, and diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques. Now in full color, this edition adds coverage of more surgical procedures and expands coverage of zoonotic disease. From editors Katherine Quesenberry and James W. Carpenter, along with a team of expert contributors, the "Pink Book" provides an authoritative, single source of information that is hard to find elsewhere. A logical organization makes it quick and easy to find important information, with each section devoted to a single animal and chapters within each section organized by body system. Over 400 photographs and illustrations highlight key concepts such as radiographic interpretation and the main points of diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques. A chapter on ophthalmology provides hard-to-find information on eye care for ferrets, rabbits, rodents, and other small mammals. Coverage of preventive medicine includes basic biology, husbandry, and routine care of the healthy animal. The drug formulary supplies dosage instructions for ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, rats/mice, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders. Chapter outlines offer at-a-glance overviews of the contents of each chapter. Handy tables and charts make it easy to find key information. Expanded Zoonotic Diseases chapter adds more depth along with the latest information on the rising potential for disease transmission to humans as exotic pets become more popular. Additional surgical procedures for each species are included, some with step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photographs and line drawings. Full-color images show the sometimes minute structures of these small animals and make accurate diagnoses easier, especially for lymphoproliferative diseases of rabbits, endoscopy, cytology, and hematology.

Book Naked Mole Rats Do Your Kids Know This

Download or read book Naked Mole Rats Do Your Kids Know This written by Tanya Turner and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naked Mole Rat is exactly what it sounds like - it's a species of rat belonging to the order of rodents, and it is called "naked" because it has very little hair, leaving its skin totally exposed. This animal is also called by other names, such as Sand Puppy and Desert Mole Rat. If you've seen newly born puppies, then you know that they somewhat look like a mouse or a rat, which is why it's called a Sand Puppy. The sand part refers to the type of place they prefer to live in. Its other name, Desert Mole Rat, is easier to understand. Of course, they can be found in deserts, and the very nature of the animal called a mole is that they live underground - just like Naked Mole Rats. This animal is therefore very interesting because of its looks and its overall characteristics. Wouldn't you like to know it better? Read on and you will find out how amazing Naked Mole Rats are.
