Book The Beauty of Numbers in Nature

Download or read book The Beauty of Numbers in Nature written by Ian Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think of a zebra's stripes, the complexities of a spider's web, the uniformity of desert dunes, or the spirals in a sunflower head ... think of a snowflake. The Beauty of Numbers in Nature shows how life on Earth forms the principles of mathematics. Starting with the simplest patterns, each chapter looks at a different kind of patterning system and the mathematics that underlies it. In doing so the book also uncovers some universal patterns, both in nature and man-made, from the basic geometry of ancient Greece to the visually startling fractals that we are familiar with today. Elegantly illustrated, The Beauty of Numbers in Nature is an illuminating and engaging vision of how the apparently cold laws of mathematics find expression in the beauty of nature.

Book excerpt: "It appears to us that the universe is structured in a deeply mathematical way. Falling bodies fall with predictable accelerations. Eclipses can be accurately forecast centuries in advance. Nuclear power plants generate electricity according to well-known formulas. But those examples are the tip of the iceberg. In Nature's Numbers, Ian Stewart presents many more, each charming in its own way.. Stewart admirably captures compelling and accessible mathematical ideas along with the pleasure of thinking of them. He writes with clarity and precision. Those who enjoy this sort of thing will love this book."—Los Angeles Times

Download or read book Numbers in Nature written by Be Naturally Curious and published by Be Naturally Curious. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for ages grades K-5 and to be done at home or with small groups, this interactive multi-activity mini-course introduces children to the Fibonacci sequence and how math and art can intersect with science and nature. It takes one of the most fascinating mathematical topics, the Fibonacci sequence, and the related Golden Ratio, and shows children how math can be used to see patterns in all kinds of natural settings, such as leaf arrangement, snail shells, and hurricanes. The mini-course includes a richly illustrated story-based lesson, as well as games, activities, and projects that appeal to all types of learners. An illustrated story about Fibonacci and his imaginary bean stalk introduces children to the mathematical concepts of sequences and sets, as well as an illustration of Fibonacci's famous pattern. By creating their own Fibonacci Flower Books, children then begin to investigate some of the places the famous sequence is found in nature. Children are then encouraged to visualize the relationship between numbers and shapes as they learn how to create their own Golden Spirals from the Fibonacci sequence. What elements of nature can they see in their spirals? Next, in the Purely Numbers Game, children reinforce and expand their understanding of these mathematical concepts by making their own mathematical sets. Finally, children will have fun testing how well they know the Fibonacci sequence by playing the movement-based Walk for Fibonacci. Most materials needed to complete the mini-course can be cut from the book. The mini-course requires only a few additional common household items to complete the activities: Colored pencils, eraser, pencil, scissors, mathematical compass (optional), two dice, blank paper, tape or glue. Upon completing the mini-course, children will be provided with links to additional online resources and will earn new concept badges for their Science Tool Kit (included in the mini-course)- - including Sequence, Pattern, Phyllotaxis, Opposite Phyllotaxis, and Sum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to really see the forest, what's the best way to count the trees? Understanding how the economy interacts with the environment has important implications for policy, regulatory, and business decisions. How should our national economic accounts recognize the increasing interest in and importance of the environment? Nature's Numbers responds to concerns about how the United States should make these measurements. The book recommends how to incorporate environmental and other non-market measures into the nation's income and product accounts. The panel explores alternative approaches to environmental accounting, including those used in other countries, and addresses thorny issues such as how to measure the stocks of natural resources and how to value non-market activities and assets. Specific applications to subsoil minerals, forests, and clean air show how the general principles can be applied. The analysis and insights provided in this book will be of interest to economists, policymakers, environmental advocates, economics faculty, businesses based on natural resources, and managers concerned with the role of the environment in our economic affairs.

Download or read book Painting the Heavens written by Eileen Reeves and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable astronomical discoveries made by Galileo with the new telescope in 1609-10 led to his famous disputes with philosophers and religious authorities, most of whom found their doctrines threatened by his evidence for Copernicus's heliocentric universe. In this book, Eileen Reeves brings an art historical perspective to this story as she explores the impact of Galileo's heavenly observations on painters of the early seventeenth century. Many seventeenth-century painters turned to astronomical pastimes and to the depiction of new discoveries in their work, yet some of these findings imposed controversial changes in their use of religious iconography. For example, Galileo's discovery of the moon's rough topography and the reasons behind its "secondary light" meant rethinking the imagery surrounding the Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception, which had long been represented in paintings by the appearance of a smooth, incandescent moon. By examining a group of paintings by early modern artists all interested in Galileo's evidence for a Copernican system, Reeves not only traces the influence of science on painting in terms of optics and content, but also reveals the painters in a conflict between artistic depiction and dogmatic representation. Reeves offers a close analysis of seven works by Lodovico Cigoli, Peter Paul Rubens, Francisco Pacheco, and Diego Velázquez. She places these artists at the center of the astronomical debate, showing that both before and after the invention of the telescope, the proper evaluation of phenomena such as moon spots and the aurora borealis was commonly considered the province of the painter. Because these scientific hypotheses were complicated by their connection to Catholic doctrine, Reeves examines how the relationship between science and art, and their mutual production of knowledge and authority, must themselves be seen in a broader context of theological and political struggle.
