Book Analysis of Spark ignition Engine Knock as Seen in Photographs Taken at 200 000 Frames a Second

Download or read book Analysis of Spark ignition Engine Knock as Seen in Photographs Taken at 200 000 Frames a Second written by Cearcy D. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A motion-picture of the development of knock in a spark-ignition engine is presented, which consists of 20 photographs taken at intervals of 5 microseconds, or at a rate of 200,000 photographs a second, with an equivalent wide-open exposure time of 6.4 microseconds for each photograph. A motion picture of a complete combustion process, including the development of knock, taken at the rate of 40,000 photographs a second is also presented to assist the reader in orienting the photographs of the knock development taken at 200,000 frames per second are analyzed and the conclusion is made that the type of knock in the spark-ignition engine involving violent gas vibration originates as a self-propagating disturbance starting at a point in the burning or autoigniting gases and spreading out from that point through the incompletely burned gases at a rate as high as 6800 feet per second, or about twice the speed of sound in the burned gases. Apparent formation of free carbon particles in both the burning and the burned gas is observed within 10 microseconds after passage of the knock disturbance through the gases.

Book Relation Between Spark ignition Engine Knock Detonation Waves and Autoignition as Shown by High speed Photography

Download or read book Relation Between Spark ignition Engine Knock Detonation Waves and Autoignition as Shown by High speed Photography written by Cearcy D. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical review of literature bearing on the autoignition and detonation-wave theories of spark-ignition engine knock and on the nature of gas vibrations associated with combustion and knock results in the conclusion that neither the autoignition theory nor the detonation-wave theory is an adequate explanation of spark-ignition engine knock. A knock theory is proposed, combining the autoignition and detonation-wave theories, introducing the idea that the detonation wave develops in autoignited or afterburning gases, and ascribing comparatively low-pitched heavy knocks to autoignition but high-pitched pinging knocks to detonation waves with the possibility of combinations of the two types of knock.

Book Characteristics of Thin Triangular Wings with Triangular tip Control Surfaces at Supersonic Speeds with Mach Lines Behind the Leading Edge

Download or read book Characteristics of Thin Triangular Wings with Triangular tip Control Surfaces at Supersonic Speeds with Mach Lines Behind the Leading Edge written by Warren A. Tucker and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis, based on the linearized equation for supersonic flow, of characteristics of triangular-tip control surfaces on thin triangular wings. By restriction to case for which Mach lines from wing apex lie behind the leading edge, a simplified treatment was possible; results of previous work on lift of triangular wings could be used to derive expressions for lift effectiveness, pitching moment, rolling-moment effectiveness, hinge moment due to control deflection, and hinge moment due to angle of attack. Comparisons were made with two-dimensional case.

Book Ninth Symposium International on Combustion

Download or read book Ninth Symposium International on Combustion written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 1118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion covers the proceedings of the Ninth Symposium (International) on Combustion, held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on August 27 to September 1, 1962, under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. The book focuses on the processes and reactions involved in combustion. The selection first offers information on flame strength of propane-oxygen flames at low pressures in turbulent flow and mixing and flow in ducted turbulent jets. Topics include radial profile of the jetting velocity, radial growth of the jet, and mixing zones of a ducted jet. The text then elaborates on turbulent flame studies in two-dimensional open burners; turbulent mass transfer and rates of combustion in confined turbulent flames; and flame stabilization in a boundary layer. The publication examines the theoretical study of properties of laminar steady state flames as a function of properties of their chemical components and spectra of alkali metal-organic halide flames. The text then takes a look at the thermal radiation theory for plane flame propagation in coal dust clouds; flame characteristics of the diborane-hydrazine system; and studies of the combustion of dimethyl hydrazine and related compounds. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the processes and reactions involved in combustion.

Book Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice second edition revised Volume 2

Download or read book Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice second edition revised Volume 2 written by Charles Fayette Taylor and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1985-03-19 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition of Taylor's classic work on the internal-combustion engine incorporates changes and additions in engine design and control that have been brought on by the world petroleum crisis, the subsequent emphasis on fuel economy, and the legal restraints on air pollution. The fundamentals and the topical organization, however, remain the same. The analytic rather than merely descriptive treatment of actual engine cycles, the exhaustive studies of air capacity, heat flow, friction, and the effects of cylinder size, and the emphasis on application have been preserved. These are the basic qualities that have made Taylor's work indispensable to more than one generation of engineers and designers of internal-combustion engines, as well as to teachers and graduate students in the fields of power, internal-combustion engineering, and general machine design.
