Book excerpt: * Co-winner of the tenth annual James S. Donnelly, Sr. award for Books in History and the Social Sciences presented by the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS) In 1879, local people reported an apparition of the Virgin Mary and other supernatural personages at Knock, a poor rural village in western Ireland. The author draws on both insiders' views and his training as a sociologist to show how the apparition was related to the local social context including economic, cultural, religious, political and historical dimensions. Drawing on new and neglected sources of evidence, Hynes pays particular attention to the individuals most directly involved including the seers, local clergy, Land League activists, various promoters, and others. The author looks through participants' eyes as much as possible. To understand what those eyes saw, the book examines the local scene for half a century before the apparition. His deep knowledge of the local context enables the author to develop understandings of key persons and events before and around the apparition. Using the Knock case, the author challenges usually accepted explanations of changes in nineteenth-century Irish Catholicism. The book is important for those interested in the links between official and local religion especially in Irish Catholicism, for students of apparitions generally, for anyone interested in bottom-up approaches to social and cultural history, and especially for students of nineteenth-century Ireland.

Book The Message

Download or read book The Message written by Joe Coleman and published by Poolbeg Press Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Coleman made world headlines when he revealed that the Blessed Virgin would be appearing in Knock, County Mayo, in September 2009. Many of the 10,000 people who showed up that day claimed they saw the sun dancing, and Joe himself received a message from Our Lady. Though mistrusted and hounded by the “official” Church and some in the media, Joe earned the respect and trust of many more. Now, for the first time, Joe Coleman tells his own story. A humble man from a very ordinary background, Joe had the gift of “second sight” from an early age. He first saw Our Lady when he was just twelve years old. Then, at the age of 33, Joe broke his back in an accident; he technically “died” on the operating table, waking 30 minutes later to the astonishment of the doctors and nurses. During this time, Joe claims he visited heaven, seeing the most beautiful sights of his life. It was after this experience that Joe’s true spiritual calling came into its own, and he soon gained a reputation as a remarkable healer and clairvoyant. He spent twenty years healing people who came to him. During this time, he continued to receive messages from the Blessed Virgin. All changed in March 2009 when Our Lady appeared and asked him to bring a young man to Medjugorje. This led to the remarkable events of the past year. The Message is a powerful true story of faith and revelation. It culminates with the messages Joe has received from Our Lady, messages of incredible changes coming to our world, changes that will see hope triumph over despair – as long as we pray.

Book My Miracle Cure

Download or read book My Miracle Cure written by John Scally and published by Black & White Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I stood up. A miracle had happened. I could walk. It was as if I was born again.' With a heart full of prayer, Marion Carroll journeyed to Knock in the west of Ireland. For 17 years, Multiple Sclerosis had ravaged her body so utterly that this reluctant pilgrim travelled on a stretcher. Then, at the Mass, an unimaginable miracle. Marion rose, pain-free, to walk, talk and see once more. Thanks to this wondrous blessing, Marion has transformed - in her 'own small way' - the lives of countless others. Her ministries share her rock-like faith and devotion to God. They testify to the power of ordinary people to listen, to care, to inspire. Nearly 30 years later, the Catholic Church officially recognised Marion's cure as a proclaimed miracle. Here, with warmth, grace, humility - and down-to-earth Irish humour - she tells of her life 'before' and 'after'. Marion's powerful, uplifting story is unique. It shines a light on love, hope and a remarkable relationship with God.

Book The Vatican Prophecies

Download or read book The Vatican Prophecies written by John Thavis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The process by which these supernatural events are authenticated is expertly told by John Thavis, one of the world’s leading Vaticanologists. In fact, that a book on so secretive and complex a topic is so deeply researched, beautifully written, and artfully told is something of a small miracle itself.”—James Martin, S.J., author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage From the New York Times bestselling author of The Vatican Diaries, a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the Vatican investigates claims of miraculous events Apocalyptic prophecies and miraculous apparitions are headline-grabbing events that often put the Catholic Church’s concept of “rational faith” at odds with the passion of its more zealous followers. To some, these claims teeter on the edge of absurdity. Others see them as evidence of a private connection with God. For the Vatican, the issue is much more nuanced as each supposed miraculous event could have serious theological and political consequences. In response, the Vatican has developed a highly secretive and complex evaluation system to judge the authenticity of supernatural phenomena. Former journalist John Thavis uses his thirty years’ experience covering the Vatican to shed light on this little-known process, revealing deep internal debates on the power of religious relics, private revelations, exorcisms, and more. Enlightening and accessible to Catholics and non-Catholics alike, the book illustrates the Church’s struggle to balance the tension between traditional beliefs and contemporary skepticism.
