Book Knights in Training

Download or read book Knights in Training written by Heather Haupt and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing chivalry back into our modern-day world, this book shows us how to inspire today's generation of young boys to pursue honor, courage, and compassion. In an age when respect and honor seem like distant and antiquated relics, how can we equip boys to pursue valor and courageously put the needs of others before their own? This book helps parents to inspire their boys by captivating their imagination and honoring their love for adventure. Heather Haupt explores how knights historically lived out various aspects of the knights' Code of Chivalry, as depicted in the French epic Song of Roland, and how boys can embody these same ideals now. When we issue the challenge and give boys the reasons why it is worth pursuing, we step forward on an incredible journey towards raising the kind of boys who, just like the knights of old, make an impact in their world now and for the rest of their lives.

Book The Knight the Cross and the Song

Download or read book The Knight the Cross and the Song written by Stefan Vander Elst and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Knight, the Cross, and the Song offers a new perspective on the driving forces of crusading in the period 1100-1400. Although religious devotion has long been identified as the primary motivation of those who took the cross, Stefan Vander Elst argues that it was by no means the only focus of the texts written to convince the warriors of Western Christianity to participate in the holy war. Vander Elst examines how, across three centuries, historiographical works that served as exhortations for the Crusade sought specifically to appeal to aristocratic interests beyond piety. They did so by appropriating the formal and thematic characteristics of literary genres favored by the knightly class, the chansons de geste and chivalric romance. By using the structure, commonplaces, and traditions of chivalric literature, propagandists associated the Crusade with the decidedly secular matters to which arms-bearers were drawn. This allowed them to introduce the mutual obligation between lord and vassal, family honor, the thirst for adventure, and even the desire for women as parallel and complementary motivations for Crusade, making chivalric and literary concerns an indelible part of the ideology and practice of holy war. Examining English, Latin, French, and German texts, ranging from the twelfth-century Gesta Francorum and Chanson d'Antioche to the fourteenth-century Krônike von Prûzinlant and La Prise d'Alixandre, The Knight, the Cross, and the Song traces the historical development and geographical spread of this innovative use of secular chivalric fiction both to shape the memory and interpretation of past events and to ensure the continuation of the holy war.

Book One Knight s Life

Download or read book One Knight s Life written by Henry Beyer and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry expected his older brother, William, to inherit the castle and to become the lord of Dol. However, when William dies at a young age, Henry must give up his religious studies and become a knight. He proves himself as trustworthy and intelligent and becomes a skilled knight during the First Crusade. After devastating losses, Henry struggles to live by his values and to continue to honor God. Henry must learn to recognize and embrace the gifts he possesses, many of which he doesn’t yet understand. One Knight’s Life appears to be a historical novel, but it’s much more. It’s about noticing subtle things—those which most of us take for granted—but don’t really understand. A Past-Life Regression With hindsight, I’ve concluded the reason I started writing One Knight’s Life: The Twelfth Templar when my wife asked me to drive her to Rangeley Lake to meet a woman named Kay Mora. This woman supposedly had “unusual powers” and had reportedly established her “bona fides” along these lines with the Florida State Police by helping them locate several missing persons. Not believing that sort of thing, I paid little attention. But since my wife was planning to go on a Saturday, I agreed to drive her. When we got there, we found a gray-haired old woman in a little cottage beside the lake. After introductions, I was about to look for a spot by the lake to read a book, when Kay Mora suddenly turned from Linda to me. “And what do you want me to do for you?” queried the seer in a very forceful tone. I was taken aback. I had no thought of doing anything with her. But her question was so direct that I fumbled for an answer. “I don’t know...What are my choices?” “Perhaps a past-life regression,” she replied. “And not having thought about it before was a good thing.” Based on that session, I changed my career, reestablished my values, and began to investigate near-death experiences, reincarnation, and coincidences. This book is a wonderfully historical novel. It is also one which challenges many aspects of today’s beliefs. I think you will like it. 1
