Book Hockey Night Fever

Download or read book Hockey Night Fever written by Stephen Cole and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wildly evocative chronicle of the decade that changed hockey forever. "Lady Byng died in Boston" read a sign in the Garden arena in 1970, a cheery dismissal of the NHL trophy awarded the game's most gentlemanly player. A new age of hockey was dawning. For 30 years, hockey was an orderly and (relatively) well-behaved sport. There was one Commissioner, six teams and five colours--red, white, black, blue and yellow. Oh, and one nationality. Until 1967, every player, coach, referee and GM in the NHL had been a Canadian. And then came NHL expansion, the founding of the WHA, and garish new uniforms. The Seventies had arrived: the era that gave us not only disco, polyester suits, lava lamps and mullets but also the movie Slap Shot and the arrest of ten NHL players for on-ice mayhem. But it also gave us hockey's greatest encounter (the 1972 Canada-Russia Summit), its most splendid team, the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens, and the most aesthetically satisfying game--the three-all tie on New Year's Eve, 1975, between the Canadiens and the Soviet Red Army. Modern hockey was born in the sport's wild, sensational, sometimes ugly Seventies growth spurt. The forces at play in the decade's battle for hockey supremacy--dazzling speed vs. brute force--are now, for better or worse, part of hockey's DNA. This book is a welcome reappraisal of the ten years that changed how the sport was played and experienced. Informed by first-hand interviews with players and game officials, and sprinkled with sidebars on the art and artifacts that defined Seventies hockey, the book brings dramatically alive hockey's most eventful, exciting decade.

Book Millennial Fever and the End of the World

Download or read book Millennial Fever and the End of the World written by George R. Knight and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Wednesday, October 23, 1844. That was to have been the first day in heaven. Instead, the advent believers found themselves still chained to earth, reeling in shock and grief - the laughingstock of the jeering world. The Bible, they were utterly certain, had said Jesus would return on October 22. He hadn't. "The Bible proved to failure?" asked Hiram Edson, voicing the giant questions haunting the wounded flock. "Is there no God, no heaven, no golden home city, no paradise? Is this all but a cunningly devised fable?" A century and a half have now passed. In this landmark volume, author-historian George Knight recounts the history of that shattering disappointment - a crucible of dashed hopes from which arose today's Seventh-day Adventist Church. Fifteen decades after the great disappointment, Jesus still has not come. The swift cruelty of overpowering shock has given way to an ever-deepening disillusionment and skepticism. After October 22, 1844, the advent believers could only wonder why Jesus hadn't come. Today, some Adventists may wonder if He ever will. Adventists without an advent? Fable chasers? Somewhere between white-hot millennial fever and hope grown stone cold lies the patience of the second-advent saints. This book shows how to find it.

Book Scarlet and Black Volume Three

Download or read book Scarlet and Black Volume Three written by Miya Carey and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 250th anniversary of the founding of Rutgers University is a perfect moment for the Rutgers community to reconcile its past, and acknowledge its role in the enslavement and debasement of African Americans and the disfranchisement and elimination of Native American people and culture. Scarlet and Black, Volume Three, concludes this groundbreaking documentation of the history of Rutgers’s connection to slavery, which was neither casual nor accidental—nor unusual. Like most early American colleges, Rutgers depended on slaves to build its campuses and serve its students and faculty; it depended on the sale of black people to fund its very existence. This final of three volumes concludes the work of the Committee on Enslaved and Disenfranchised Population in Rutgers History. This latest volume includes essays about Black and Puerto Rican students' experiences; the development of the Black Unity League; the Conklin Hall takeover; the divestment movement against South African apartheid; anti-racism struggles during the 1990s; and the Don Imus controversy and the 2007 Scarlet Knights women's basketball team. Book Adventism Confronts Modernity

Download or read book Adventism Confronts Modernity written by Robert J. Mayer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many restorationist-oriented associations like the Advent Christian Church often embrace two conflicting principles. First, they understand the Bible's inspiration and authority in a way that minimizes the importance and value of church tradition. Second, they give high value to individual autonomy both in biblical interpretation and in church governance. Adventism Confronts Modernity describes what can happen when these principles conflict and make it difficult to resolve theological conflict. This work begins by exploring the nineteenth-century historical and theological roots of early Adventism with special attention to William Miller and the theological impact of the Great Disappointment, the failed prediction of the early Adventists that Jesus Christ would return visibly in 1843 or 1844. Subsequent chapters explore the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversies of the early twentieth century and focus on the impact of those events on the two colleges that trained Advent Christian clergy--Aurora College (now Aurora University) and New England School of Theology (later Berkshire Christian College). After discussing theological reform efforts within the Protestant mainline and fundamentalist coalitions, this book describes the conflicting views regarding the Bible's inspiration that emerged in the early twentieth century and their impact on the Advent Christian Church during the 1950s and 1960s. It concludes that further reflection is needed on both the doctrine of Holy Scripture and how restorationist movements balance Christian theology with individual and congregational autonomy.

Book The Legacy of Two Gemini Knights

Download or read book The Legacy of Two Gemini Knights written by Geoff Logan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasonally, a tale comes along that has been lost in the mists of time. Often the story starts out as just another mundane event in daily life until something else comes out from behind the shadows. And when it does, nobody can escape the fire storm that follows, especially when the masked one demands so much of our attention. Because in the end, the consequences of his actions eventually consume all of those in its path. William McBride was such a person in the early 14th century, when he came in contact with the Logan brothers of Lanark, who were also known to the locals as the Gemini Knights. These brothers were Templar Knights of the Scottish Order and they carried out a number dangerous exploits in their time. And as William McBride found out in later life, the times he spent with the brothers would eventually place him on a path that could have a profound impact on the City of Jerusalem at the end time. To some, this story may appear to be just another old wives tale, worthy of a good read and then placed on the book shelve to gather dust from now on. However, to others the story of the Gemini Knights has more than just a ring of truth to it in some kind of old fashioned way. Enough, to engage the mind in more than a simple observation of the material that William McBride collected over his life time. So, if you have an inquisitive mind and want to gain a glimpse into the future, the only question you have to ask yourself is. 'Do I have the courage to read the book and judge for myself?'
