Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ku Klux Klan: Its Origin, Growth and Disbandment Assistance was given to me While searching for information in regard to Ku Klux Klan, by many former members of the order, and by their friends and relatives. Of especial value were the details given to me by Major James R. Crowe, of Sheffield, Alabama; the late Ryland Randolph, Esq., and his son, Ryland Randolph, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama; Judge Z. T. Ewing, of Pulaski, Tennessee; Miss Cora R. Jones, of Bir mingham, Alabama, niece of one of the founders of the Klan; Mr. Lacy H. Wilson, of Bristol, Tennessee, the son of one of the authors of the History printed within, Major S. A. Cunningham and Mr. A. V. Goodpasture, of Nashville, and Dr. John A. Wyeth, of New York City. There is still much that is obscure about Ku Klux Klan and I shall be glad to oh tain additional information in regard to the order, and also to receive notice of mistakes and errors in this account. Book excerpt: "When laws become lawless contrivances to defeat the ends of justice, it is not surprising that the people resort to lawless expedients for securing their rights."--S.S. Cox, in "Three Decades," p. 558. "A remarkable contribution to United States history by the Rev. D. L. Wilson, of Pulaski, Tenn., who vouches for his facts, most of which are new to the public, and will prove a revelation to many who consider themselves well-informed on all the outgrowths of the late conflict in the South." -The California Teacher and Home Journal "The book is undoubtedly one of great interest." -The New York Times "The main portion of the book is a reprint of an account of the origin and growth of this great order of Reconstruction days....Mr. Walter L. Fleming has contributed an introduction giving side-light information on the Klan and kindred organizations. There are appendices containing the constitution and specimens of orders and warnings issues by the Klan." -American Historical Review "With a valuable introduction and useful notes by Walter L. Fleming, professor in West Virginia University, and author of a very valuable study of 'Reconstruction in Alabama.' The book on its first appearance did not attract the attention it deserved, though it was written dispassionately and erred, if at all, rather in minimizing the services of this organization to social order than the misdeeds committed in its name. Professor Fleming's introduction serves to correct the general impression that a reading of the earlier work at this time might produce, and in view of the grotesque misstatements of some current books of reference on this subject, the republication may be considered timely." -The Churchman "This is undoubtedly the most important volume on this subject yet produced." -St. Paul Press CONTENTS INTRODUCTION. BY WALTER L. FLEMING. Chapter I. The Origin Chapter II. The Spread of the Klan Chapter III. The Transformation Chapter IV. The Decline Chapter V. Disbandment APPENDICES. Appendix I. Prescript of Ku Klux Klan Appendix II. Revised and Amended Prescript of Ku Klux Klan Appendix III. Constitution of a Local Order Appendix IV. Ku Klux Orders, Warnings, and Oaths

Book The Tap Dancing Knife Thrower

Download or read book The Tap Dancing Knife Thrower written by Paul Hogan and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The icon and legend at last tells his story his way -- without the boring bits Paul Hogan first appeared on Australia's screens in 1971 as a 'tap-dancing knife thrower' on TV talent show New Faces. The then father of four and Sydney Harbour Bridge rigger from Granville did it as a dare, but when the network's switchboard lit up, he was invited back. So popular was he with viewers, Hogan became a regular on Mike Willesee's A Current Affair. The rest, as they say, is history. In collaboration with his business partner and best friend, John Cornell (who played his sidekick, Strop), 'Hoges' went on to become Australia's favourite TV comedian. His hugely popular comedy shows and appearances in unforgettable and ground-breaking ads for cigarettes, beer and tourism, came to personify Australia and Australians here and overseas, helping to change the perception of who we are as people and as a nation. Then, in 1986, Crocodile Dundee, the movie he conceived, co-wrote and starred in, became an international smash hit and earned its star a Golden Globe Award, as well as Oscar and BAFTA nominations. Despite the fact that Hoges claimed to have retired, many more successful movies followed. Yet even as his star rose ever higher, he always expected someone to grab him by the arm and say, 'What are you doing here? You're just a bloody rigger!' The Tap-Dancing Knife Thrower is a funny and candid account of the astonishing life of this 'lucky bastard', as Hoges describes himself. Full of stories never previously shared, and recounted in the comedian's inimitable, funny and self-deprecating style, The Tap-Dancing Knife Thrower is Paul Hogan's story told his way - 'without the boring bits'.
