Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of recent trends in the management of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders that may ensue from distressing experiences associated with the process of migration. Although the symptoms induced by trauma are common to all cultures, their specific meaning and the strategies used to deal with them may be culture-specific. Consequently, cultural factors can play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with psychological reactions to extreme stress. This role is examined in detail, with an emphasis on the need for therapists to bear in mind that different cultures often have different concepts of health and disease and that cross-cultural communication is therefore essential in ensuring effective care of the immigrant patient. The therapist’s own intercultural skills are highlighted as being an important factor in the success of any treatment and specific care contexts and the global perspective are also discussed.

This volume provides multidisciplinary answers to open questions: How and to what extent do Chinese immigrants participate in their host societies? What kind of impact is the increasing number of highly qualified immigrants from China having on the development and perception of overseas Chinese communities in Europe? How is the development of Chinese identity transforming in relation to generational change? By focusing on two key European countries, Germany and France, this volume makes a topical contribution to research on (new) Chinese immigrants in Europe.

Book Cultural and Ethnic Diversity

Download or read book Cultural and Ethnic Diversity written by Alexander Thomas and published by Hogrefe Publishing GmbH. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural diversity – how psychologists can meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities Culture and diversity are both challenge and opportunity. This volume looks at what psychologists are and can be doing to help society meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities in education, at work, and in clinical practice. The increasingly international and globalized nature of modern societies means that psychologists in particular face new challenges and have new opportunities in all areas of practice and research. The contributions from leading European experts cover relevant intercultural issues and topics in areas as diverse as personality, education and training, work and organizational psychology, clinical and counselling psychlogy, migration and international youth exchanges. As well as looking at the new challenges and opportunities that psychologists face in dealing with people from increasingly varied cultural backgrounds, perhaps more importantly they also explain and discuss how psychologists can deepen and acquire the intercultural competencies that are now needed in our professional lives.

Book Couples Coping with Stress

Download or read book Couples Coping with Stress written by Mariana K. Falconier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that reviews both empirical and clinical applications of how couples jointly cope with stress - dyadic coping - around the globe. The Systemic-Transactional Stress Model (STM), developed by co-editor Guy Bodenmann, is used as a consistent framework so readers can better appreciate the contrasts and similarities across the fourteen cultures represented in the book. Written by scholars from the particular culture, each chapter provides a conceptual review of the dyadic coping research conducted in their specific cultures, and also provides empirical and clinical recommendations. Additional contributions include how to measure dyadic coping, so others can apply the STM model in other contexts. The latest treatment approaches for therapy and prevention are also highlighted, making this book ideal for professionals interested in expanding their cultural competence when working with couples from various backgrounds. Highlights include: -How couples in different cultures deal with stress and how values and traditions affect dyadic stress and coping. -Global applications, especially to couples in the regions highlighted in the book -- the U.S (including one chapter on Latino couples in the U.S.)., Australia, China, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland. -Factors encountered in examining dyadic coping using the STM Model including measurement and assessment issues. -Suggestions for making treatment, prevention, and intervention programs for couples more effective. Ideal for relationship researchers, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and advanced students who work with couples dealing with stress. This book is also appropriate for advanced courses on interpersonal processes, close relationships, stress and coping, multicultural issues in marriage and family therapy or counseling, or family systems, taught in a variety of social science disciplines.

Book Kommunikation ber Grenzen

Download or read book Kommunikation ber Grenzen written by Gerhard Stilz and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Vor diesem Hintergrund organisierte die German Section of the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Pune, eine internationale interdisziplinäre Konferenz in Pune (7.-9.

Book Georg Simmel in Translation

Download or read book Georg Simmel in Translation written by David D. Kim and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Georg Simmel considered himself a philosopher, his intellectual influence went well beyond the confines of one academic discipline at the turn of the last century. His writings on money, modernity, and the metropolis, as well as the artwork, female culture, and psychologism, left a significant mark on contemporaries like Walter Benjamin, Wilhelm Worringer, and Max Weber. Nevertheless, his name soon disappeared from public memory and scholarly discourse. In Georg Simmel in Translation, scholars from the Humanities and the Social Sciences cut through time and space to illustrate ways in which Simmel was, and still is, carried from one context to another. From Imperial Berlin to contemporary Singapore, they trace Simmelâ (TM)s transgression of disciplinary boundaries in culture and modernity. The collected essays also explore the transformed presence of his scholarship in the works of more well-known artists, writers, and intellectuals between the second half of the nineteenth century and today.

Book Normed Children

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erik Schneider
  • Publisher : Transcript Publishing
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 374 pages

Download or read book Normed Children written by Erik Schneider and published by Transcript Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gender- and sex-related norms have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school, and peers, they seem to be an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German-speaking countries from 2014 onwards, this title is now available in English. The texts show that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological as well as theoretical approaches, e.g. by introducing the figure of the continuum, so that, in future research projects, more than just the two sexes and genders of female and male might be considered as a new normality." -- Back cover.
