Book Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here

Download or read book Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here written by Beau Beausoleil and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 5th, 2007, a car bomb was exploded on al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad. More than thirty people were killed and more than one hundred were wounded. This locale is the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, a winding street filled with bookstores and outdoor book stalls. Named after the famed 10th century classical Arab poet al-Mutanabbi, it has been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community. This anthology begins with a historical introduction to al-Mutanabbi Street and includes the writing of Iraqis as well as a wide swath of international poets and writers who were outraged by this attack. This book seeks to show where al-Mutanabbi Street starts in all of us: personally, in our communities, and in our nations. It seeks to show the commonality between this small street in Baghdad and our own cultural centers, and why this attack was an attack on us all. This anthology sees al-Mutanabbi Street as a place for the free exchange of ideas; a place that has long offered its sanctuary to the complete spectrum of Iraqi voices. This is where the roots of democracy (in the best sense of that word) took hold many hundreds of years ago. This anthology looks toward al-Mutanabbi Street as an affirmation of all that we hope for in a more just society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologists agree that the conditions described above are tormenting hundreds of thousands of men and women, and even boys and girls, in the world today. It has become a matter of major concern among the professional men who make it their business to treat the ills of the human mind and body. For these feelings cause not only unhappiness and mild nervousness, but often acute pains, and truly serious physical conditions. Many of those who visit their doctors, complaining of acute pains, heart disease, stomach disorders, severe headaches, sinus disorders, abdominal pains, in the feet, legs, and arms, are in reality suffering from no actual organic ailment. Their difficulties can be traced to nothing but mental and emotional tensions. Asa A. Allen was a controversial evangelist with a Pentecostal healing and deliverance ministry. He was associated with the "Voice of Healing" movement founded by Gordon Lindsay. Allen became one of the first to develop a national television ministry. His television programs frequently included excerpts from his "healing line" ministry.

Book New York Revisited

Download or read book New York Revisited written by Kenneth Auchincloss and published by Grolier, Incorporated. This book was released on 2002 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, The Grolier Club published New York with color wood engravings by Rudolph Ruzicka. That book evoked the city in a period of rapid, remarkable change. In New York Revisited, Ken Auchincloss traces the evolution of New York in the twentieth century. Along with the city's enormous physical and social transformations, up to and including the events of September 11, 2001, Ken conveys the continuity of spirit and character of the "New York accent." Two-and-a half in the making, New York Revisited is illustrated by the foremost contemporary artist in color wood engraving. The engravings include the Empire State building, Chrysler Building from Lexington Avenue, 230 Park Avenue, Grand Central subway station, White Horse Tavern, Times Square, the World Trade Center (vignette), and Strawberry fields. One of 250 signed and numbered copies, designed and printed by the artist at his press, Midnight Paper Sales.
