Book Sukuma Labor Songs from Western Tanzania

Download or read book Sukuma Labor Songs from Western Tanzania written by Frank D. Gunderson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an interpretive analysis of a collection of 335 song texts treated as primary historical sources. The collection highlights the cultural practices that link music with labor in Sukuma communities in northwestern Tanzania. These linkages are evident in the music of the elephant, snake, and porcupine hunting associations that flourished in the precolonial epoch, in the nineteenth-century regional and long-distance porter associations, and in the farmer associations that have proliferated since the beginning of the twentieth century. Acting primarily as an interpretive editor, the author collaborated with several Tanzanian scholars and translators towards fine-tuning the translation of these texts into English, and gathered testimonies in order to create succinct interpretive statements about the songs.

Book The Animation Pimp

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Robinson
  • Publisher : Course Technology
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book The Animation Pimp written by Chris Robinson and published by Course Technology. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five years, Chris Robinson wrote a monthly column for Animation World Network (AWN) called The Animation Pimp. Although it began as a way for Robinson to let off steam in his role as director of one of the world's largest animation festivals, the column quickly gained a cult following and just as quickly became a platform for the author's frank, provocative, and frequently very funny musings on the world of animation and his own life. The Animation Pimp collects the best of these pieces, which range from the nuts and bolts of running a festival to sex, death, superheroes, aesthetics, and the living dead. Robinson's unhinged prose is accompanied by some eighty drawings by the award-winning German artist and animator Andreas Hykade. In the spirit of Hunter Thompson, Nick Tosches, and Richard Meltzer, The Animation Pimp is an outrageous, funny, and ultimately truthful account of the chaos and glimmers of illumination in an art form and a life. The Animation Pimp is the first in a series of official guides published in collaboration with AWN Press. Each book covers major facets of the animation industry and offers a one-of-a-kind look into the careers of industry icons.

Book excerpt: A captivating new thriller in the Wakeland detective series that explores the depths of Vancouver’s criminal underworld. Caught between the grimy and glittering sides of Vancouver’s streets, private investigator Dave Wakeland tries to keep his head down at the elite security firm he owns with partner Jeff Chen. But when masked men and women storm an ordinary-looking office building in Chinatown, leaving a trail of carnage, Wakeland finds himself caught up in a mystery that won’t let him go, as hard as he tries to elude it. The police have a vested interest in finding the shooters, and so does the leader of the Exiles motorcycle gang. Both want Wakeland’s help. The deeper he investigates, the more connections he uncovers: to a reclusive millionaire with ties to organized crime, an international security company with a sinister reputation, and a high-ranking police officer who seems to have a personal connection to the case. When the shooters themselves start turning up dead, Wakeland realizes the only way to guarantee his own safety, and that of the people he loves, is by finding out who hired the shooters and why. What Wakeland uncovers are secrets no one wants known—a botched undercover operation, an ambitious gangster and a double-crossing killer who used the shooting to cover up another crime. With a setup like this, anything can go wrong, and does. Skill and luck are needed for Wakeland and Chen to emerge with the killers, the money and their own lives.

Book Reimagining Indian Ocean Worlds

Download or read book Reimagining Indian Ocean Worlds written by Smriti Srinivas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book breaks new ground by bringing together multidisciplinary approaches to examine contemporary Indian Ocean worlds. It reconfigures the Indian Ocean as a space for conceptual and theoretical relationality based on social science and humanities scholarship, thus moving away from an area-based and geographical approach to Indian Ocean studies. Contributors from a variety of disciplines focus on keywords such as relationality, space/place, quotidian practices, and new networks of memory and maps to offer original insights to reimagine the Indian Ocean. While the volume as a whole considers older histories, mobilities, and relationships between places in Indian Ocean worlds, it is centrally concerned with new connectivities and layered mappings forged in the lived experiences of individuals and communities today. The chapters are steeped in ethnographic, multi-modal, and other humanities methodologies that examine different sources besides historical archives and textual materials, including everyday life, cities, museums, performances, the built environment, media, personal narratives, food, medical practices, or scientific explorations. An important contribution to several fields, this book will be of interest to academics of Indian Ocean studies, Afro-Asian linkages, inter-Asian exchanges, Afro-Arab crossroads, Asian studies, African studies, Anthropology, History, Geography, and International Relations.
