Book A Fisherman s Guide to Selected Lakes of Washington s Kitsap Peninsula Area

Download or read book A Fisherman s Guide to Selected Lakes of Washington s Kitsap Peninsula Area written by John E. Moore and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most fishing guides offer very limited information on a large number of lakes, most of which their authors have never been near. This book provides detailed information on the lake and surrounding area, as well as directions and fishing tips. All lakes included in this book have been personally visited, photographed, and in most cases fished by the author. The emphasis is on the fisherman's perspective, but detailed trail and camping information is provided where applicable. The lakes selected for inclusion in this book are on and around the Kitsap Peninsula of northwest Washington. Most of the lakes are in Mason and Kitsap Counties. Also included are a few lakes in Pierce County that are found on the Key Peninsula, as well as some eastern Jefferson County lakes. Mason County includes an area to the south of the Kitsap Peninsula, and also the southeastern corner of the Olympic Peninsula. Those areas are also covered in this book. The author is a ten-time Washington State record holder, with certified weight records for five different species of fish. Catch data for several hundred lakes, dating back to 1981, has been provided to Washington State fish biologists. Data dating back to 1994 has also been provided to the State of Montana. Born and raised in northwest Washington and part of a very outdoor oriented family, the author has spent his entire life exploring new places and looking for new waters to fish. So far the search for fishing opportunities has ranged across the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Book Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula

Download or read book Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula written by Jacilee Wray and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine Native tribes of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula—the Hoh, Skokomish, Squaxin Island, Lower Elwha Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, Port Gamble S’Klallam, Quinault, Quileute, and Makah—share complex histories of trade, religion, warfare, and kinship, as well as reverence for the teaching of elders. However, each indigenous nation’s relationship to the Olympic Peninsula is unique. Native Peoples of the Olympic Peninsula: Who We Are traces the nine tribes’ common history and each tribe’s individual story. This second edition is updated to include new developments since the volume’s initial publication—especially the removal of the Elwha River dams—thus reflecting the ever-changing environment for the Native peoples of the Olympic Peninsula. Nine essays, researched and written by members of the subject tribes, cover cultural history, contemporary affairs, heritage programs, and tourism information. Edited by anthropologist Jacilee Wray, who also provides the book’s introduction, this collection relates the Native peoples’ history in their own words and addresses each tribe’s current cultural and political issues, from the establishment of community centers to mass canoe journeys. The volume’s updated content expands its findings to new audiences. More than 70 photographs and other illustrations, many of which are new to this edition, give further insight into the unique legacy of these groups, moving beyond popular romanticized views of American Indians to portray their lived experiences. Providing a foundation for outsiders to learn about the Olympic Peninsula tribes’ unique history with one another and their land, this volume demonstrates a cross-tribal commitment to education, adaptation, and cultural preservation. Furthering these goals, this updated edition offers fresh understanding of Native peoples often seen from an outside perspective only.

Book Late Pleistocene and Holocene Environmental Change on the Olympic Peninsula Washington

Download or read book Late Pleistocene and Holocene Environmental Change on the Olympic Peninsula Washington written by Daniel G. Gavin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study brings together decades of research on the modern natural environment of Washington's Olympic Peninsula, reviews past research on paleoenvironmental change since the Late Pleistocene, and finally presents paleoecological records of changing forest composition and fire over the last 14,000 years. The focus of this study is on the authors’ studies of five pollen records from the Olympic Peninsula. Maps and other data graphics are used extensively. Paleoecology can effectively address some of these challenges we face in understanding the biotic response to climate change and other agents of change in ecosystems. First, species responses to climate change are mediated by changing disturbance regimes. Second, biotic hotspots today suggest a long-term maintenance of diversity in an area, and researchers approach the maintenance of diversity from a wide range and angles (CITE). Mountain regions may maintain biodiversity through significant climate change in ‘refugia’: locations where components of diversity retreat to and expand from during periods of unfavorable climate (Keppel et al., 2012). Paleoecological studies can describe the context for which biodiversity persisted through time climate refugia. Third, the paleoecological approach is especially suited for long-lived organisms. For example, a tree species that may typically reach reproductive sizes only after 50 years and remain fertile for 300 years, will experience only 30 to 200 generations since colonizing a location after Holocene warming about 11,000 years ago. Thus, by summarizing community change through multiple generations and natural disturbance events, paleoecological studies can examine the resilience of ecosystems to disturbances in the past, showing how many ecosystems recover quickly while others may not (Willis et al., 2010).
