Book excerpt: A Guyanese Girl's Story is a series of short stories from my childhood. One of my favorite is "Kite Flying in the Village". Kite flying is a family outing for many in Guyana, South America. Easter is a very special holiday in my village of Vreedenhoop in which the children of many ages make and decorate kites to fly in celebration of Easter. Another part of kite flying is when mischievous children cut down kites by attaching a razor to their own kites. In this story the main character Anya deals with a mean boy named Joey who lives next door. While flying kites, Anya learns a valuable lesson of friendship and family. Children will enjoy the sneaky plots of the mean neighborhood boy as well as the colorful illustrations.

When engineers were faced with the challenge of bridging the vast Niagara Gorge, the solution was a kite-flying contest. After Katie and Homan's kite crosses the gorge and wins the contest, construction begins on the first suspension bridge to connect the United States and Canada. The two friends are there as it becomes an important link on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. Even as her parents try to shield her from the ugly existence of slavery and the dangers of the Underground Railroad, Katie discovers that the scary truth is closer to home than she could have imagined. Kite to Freedom is an action-packed, fictionalized account of actual events that occurred during the construction of the Niagara Falls International Suspension Bridge, which still connects the United States and Canada at Niagara Falls.

With all the doctors and hospitals, there’s been little time for fun. But what should they do? Flying a kite is great fun on a windy day. But first they must make their kite. And they’ll need supplies. And the money to buy them. And they will have to get around all the grown-ups who might stand in their way. And so this never-to-be-forgotten day begins. This is a story of friendship. Of first loss. And of seizing the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing how to fold a paper airplane can make you a better parent! Well, maybe not better, but you’ll certainly have more fun with your children, who understandably assume that you know how to do just about everything. If they only knew! Catch a Fish, Throw a Ball, Fly a Kite is for parents who want to teach their children what they really want to learn--even the skills you never mastered or haven't practiced in a few decades. This book contains clear, simple, step-by-step instructions for teaching more than twenty little life skills that every child should know, including how to: • Work a yo-yo • Build a fire • Eat with chopsticks • Skip a stone • Fly a homemade kite • Throw a Frisbee While you teach your children, you get to learn the skills too, or at the very least improve on them. Activities range from practical, like locating the constellations, to completely frivolous fun, like turning a blade of grass into a musical instrument. Some are simple enough for four-year-olds, and others will appeal to the most jaded adolescent. Each skill is illustrated and is rounded out with fascinating trivia (did you know that the world’s largest sand castle measured six stories high?) or funny jokes. Age-appropriate information is given for each skill, but they all have one thing in common: You and your kids can do them together!
