In this balanced biography, written by a fellow British Army officer who served in the First World War, his long career in the army and as a colonial administrator is charted in vivid detail. Kitchener came to worldwide attention in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title “Lord Kitchener of Khartoum”; as Chief of Staff (1900–02) in the Second Boer War he played a key role in Lord Roberts’ conquest of the Boer Republics, then succeeded Roberts as commander-in-chief–ultimately winning the war against the insurgent Boers. After a quarrelsome term as Commander-in-Chief (1902–09) in India he returned to Egypt as Consul-General. In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Lord Kitchener became Secretary of State for War, a Cabinet Minister. One of the few to foresee a long war, he organised the largest volunteer army that both Britain and the world had seen, and oversaw a significant expansion of materials production to fight Germany on the Western Front. Despite having warned of the difficulty of provisioning Britain for a long war, he was blamed for the shortage of shells in the spring of 1915 – one of the events leading to the formation of a coalition government – and stripped of his control over munitions and strategy. Kitchener drowned on 5 June 1916 when HMS Hampshire sank west of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. He was making his way to Russia in order to attend negotiations but the ship struck a German mine. He was one of the 600 killed on board the ship.

As close member of Kitchener’s inner circle, he saw and wrote of the famous campaign in Sudan, variously known as the Madhist Revolt, or the Second Anglo-Sudan War of 1896-1899. As Steevens recounts in inimitable detail, Kitchener, having become Sirdar or commander of the Egyptian Army set out to recapture the Sudan and avenge his hero Gordon, who had been murdered by the Mahdi some years earlier. As Kitchener and his force descended the Nile, with Steevens in tow, they took great care to ensure their line of supply building a railway line as they went and supplied by river flotilla. The first main clash of forces was at the Battle of Atbara in April 1898 where the British and Egyptian forces furiously attacked and routed a Sudanese camp. Kitchener’s greatest hour came at the battle of Khartoum, four months later, when confronted with a vastly larger force, he relied on the firepower of disciplined volleys and machine guns to break the rebel army beyond repair. Although the revolt lasted a little while longer into 1899, Kitchener could rightly claim to be the victor of the campaign and was ennobled Lord Kitchener of Khartoum. An excellent account of a pivotal Imperial campaign.

Field Marshal Horatio Kitchener, 1st Earl of Khartoum still stands as one of the great generals produced by Britain. His career was marked by great deeds, and great controversies. The son of a military family, he trained at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich before his first trip to the Middle East surveying in Palestine in 1874. He joined the newly formed Egyptian Army in 1883, which was in reality controlled by the British, and embarked on campaign in Sudan. He was part of the failed Gordon relief expedition in 1884, and learned a great deal of the area, its people and the military problems of fighting in the arid desert. By 1892 he was Sirdar, head of the Egyptian army, he was given command of the expedition to crush the self-appointed Mahdi who had taken control of large parts of Sudan. It was during this campaign that he gained public and Royal attention after the victories of Atbara and Omdurman that crushed the revolt of the Mahdi. He served as Lord Robert’s second in command during the Boer War and served with distinction and much success, although his institution of concentration camps caused great outrage and awful civilian distress. Perhaps his greatest services were during the First World War, as Secretary of State for War, fashioning a great civilian army to fight the militarised hordes of Germany in France and Flanders. He may have gained even greater fame, but was tragically lost at sea when the H.M.S. Hampshire was torpedoed in 1916. An excellent short biography.

Although Kitchener shares so much of the character of the region today, its past was considerably different. Until 1916, Kitchener was Berlin, “Canada’s German capital.” Over two-thirds of the residents were of German origin; many retained strong traces of that past. These became controversial when Canada fought two wars against Germany. By the middle of the First World War, the idea of “a patch of Germany” in the heart of southern Ontario became untenable. Berlin became Kitchener, but not without a battle which split the small city. This is the first scholarly history of Kitchener. Based on wide-ranging research, it illustrates how a community so unlike its neighbours became a part of the broader Canadian community in the twentieth century. Much of the information is new, and many myths are punctured. The romantic mists which have surrounded the story of the early Mennonite settlers are lifted. The impact of the Depression and the extraordinary economic boom which accompanied the Second World War are analyzed. He was praised for his conduct during the Battles of Mons and Le Cateau in August 1914, and was given command of Second Army from December 1914 to April 1915. Smith-Dorrien fell foul of Sir John French, whom he little respected, during the Second Battle of Ypres, when he recommended a strategic withdrawal closer to Ypres, feeling that nothing short of a major counter-offensive was likely to regain the ground taken by the Germans during their offensive. French disagreed, dismissing Smith-Dorrien home to England upon the pretext of ill-health, and replacing him with Herbert Plumer, who ironically also recommended a withdrawal upon taking up his position; French accepted Plumer’s advice.’-Michael Duffy

He then accompanied the troops to Gallipoli, being wounded in the process of his reporting. His experiences in the Peninsula would form the basis of this book. His account of the Dardanelles campaign covers all of the action from the initial planning stages on the Admiralty’s drawing boards, through the naval attacks to the landings and the struggle amongst the deadly rocks and beaches of Gallipoli. Nevinson was careful to check and re-check his information, using numerous illustrations and staff maps for accuracy. CHAPTER XIV Kitchener's delicate duty during the latter months of 1884 was to keep up communication with Gordon, whose rather fretful messages--more than excusable under the strain and sense of desolation--made difficulties a little more difficult. Gordon, for instance, curiously failed to make allowance for the risks and chances to which the messengers and missives were exposed. Thus (September 24) he complains that the only messengers who ever reach him are his own, whom he had sent out from Khartum; that the British officers "seem to grudge the least expense" in giving him information, or else that "they think it of no importance." He wonders that "men like Kitchener" should "not have more brains than to write merely 'I hope you are well, ' " or "ask silly questions" such as Kitchener's to Stewart, "What can I do for you?" 1 He is vexed that Kitchener, l The reference was, of course, to personal necessaries and comforts. Gordon, missing this fact, threw away the wrapping, complained of getting no news, and looked upon it as a piece of luck when a servant came to him two days later with the papers. Fallon was a pre-war regular (Northumberland Fusiliers) who, when war broke out, was a staff sergeant instructor at the Australian Royal Military College in Duntroon. Transferred in some unexplained fashion to the Australian army he took part in the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915, which he describes in gory detail, as he does the rest of the fighting till he was evacuated in December. Back in the British army he was commisioned into the Buckingham Battalion (TF) of the O & B LI (145th Bde/48th Division) with which he fought on the Western Front till badly wounded at the end of 1916. He seems to go out of his way to make his descriptions of the fighting as bloody as possible, and as for the Germans, he has a chapter entitled “Hun Beastliness” in which he makes unbelievable statements such as the two examples which follow: It was the nude body of the Mother Superior. She had been nailed to the door. She had been crucified. In the ruins we brought out the bodies of four nuns, unspeakably mutilated. Their bodies had been stabbed and slashed each more than a hundred times. They had gone to martyrdom resisting incredible brutes. They had fought hard, the blond hair of their assassins clutched in their dead hands. And again, at Wytschaete: Above the wreck of the skyline trench bayonets stuck up, and on them were the severed heads, with horrible smiles under their English caps, of twenty of my men. Referring to German soldiers he writes: They hate the bayonet. The cold steel is not for Hans. Shades of Dad’s Army, Lcpl Jones and “They don’t like it up ‘em”.”-Print ed.

His enduring modern fame rests on his achievements during the First World War, when he was selected to command one of the two corps of the small British Expeditionary Force in 1914 by Lord Kitchener, firmly believing that Smith-Dorrien would stand up to the commander Sir John French. As the B.E.F. struggled back through Belgium in the face of German forces that greatly outnumbered their own troops in 1914, the strain on the men began to show; they thought that they had outfought the Germans at the battle of Mons, but physically they could not fight and outmarch their foes. Seeing the tired and resentful expressions on his men’s faces, Smith-Dorrien came to a fateful decision: the safe retreat of the footsore B.E.F. could only be carried out if the Germans were slowed down. In defiance of his orders from Sir John French to keep going, he gathered as many of his soldiers as could stand and fought a brilliant rearguard action at Le Cateau, now regarded as pivotal in saving the B.E.F. from piecemeal destruction. Castigated in public and in private military circles for his decision at the time, he accelerated his downfall by his forthright attitude to his superior, Sir John French. After pointing out the flaws in French’s wasteful tactics following a particularly disastrous counterattack at Ypres, Smith-Dorrien had gone too far and was sent home under the excuse of “ill-health”, never to hold a field command again. His memoirs are detailed, exciting and a good balance to the highly inventive writings of Sir John French.
