Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers everywhere who are embracing the Danish art of hygge – the first warm, wise and romantic hygge novel! The perfect feel-good novel to curl up with - light some candles, wrap yourself in a blanket and relax ... Bo, 26, has always been careful, cautious. However, she's just been made redundant and her life plan is beginning to unravel. Before she starts immediately applying for other jobs in a panic, her friend Kirsten persuades her to take a holiday, to visit Kirsten's mother's house in Aalborg, North Jutland, a part of Denmark Bo is ashamed to admit she has never heard of. 'What's the weather going to be like?' she asks Kirsten hopefully, scrolling her cursor over the budget airlines webpage. 'Terrible,' Kirsten replies, 'London is positively Mediterranean by comparison, and of course it's November so it'll be dark seventeen hours a day. But no one goes to Denmark to get a tan. You need a change of scene and to blow away the cobwebs, and trust me, Skagen will do that. Besides, the summerhouse is cosy whatever the weather, and you never know who else will be around.' A few clicks later and there is no going back. And Bo's life plan is about to be entirely rewritten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book depicts the true story of Frederick William Miller and John Armstrong Robison who served the Union in the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. It follows the time they spent from training at Camp Fuller to being wounded at the battle of Chickamauga. Through their letters and memoirs the two men vividly described the everyday events of a soldier's life, the horrors of battle, the pain and suffering of being wounded, the journey from the battlefield to the hospitals in Nashville, the experience of amputation, and the effects of gangrene on both men. At the Battle of Chickamauga, the 96th, in the front line of Whitaker's Brigade, marched double quick to the aid of General George Thomas. John, as a member of the color guard, was in the very front of their Regiment. Granger's Reserves arrived at Snodgrass Hill just in the nick of time. The "Rock of Chickamauga" was nearly out of ammunition and in desperate need of reinforcements. Whitaker's green troops fought bravely that afternoon and by the end of the battle, no one doubted that they earned the name "Iron Brigade of Chickamauga." The story explodes when both are wounded. The novel, through John's memoirs, tells the story of how the Federal wounded soldiers of Chickamauga traveled from the battlefield in Georgia to the hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee. John told in his own words, the pain and suffering that he and others endured during the week they traveled, many on foot, to Nashville after the battle. Four days after walking over sixty miles to Bridgeport he wrote, "Finally the train was loaded and we started and oh, the jar of that old box car was so great, I had to sit squatted down on my toeslike, and then the pain was so great in my arm that the tears would run from my eyes." The novel also tells the fate of the slightly wounded. These soldiers stayed with their regiments for a week or more before they received proper treatment, which by then, for many was too late. Exemplary of the state of their medical care are Charles E. Belknap's remarks: "In the confusion of the retreat, primary operations could not be performed to the extent desired; thus, many cases of injuries of the knee and ankle joints subsequently proved fatal that might have been saved by timely amputations." Many of these soldiers, like Frederick, died. 213 pages, 8.5 X 11, soft cover, 17 B&W Photos, 40 Drawings, 1Maps, 11Other

Book excerpt: A life told in one book. What am I writing for? Dear reader, I need to vent, the thoughts flow in a raw way, with no time for embellishments, and no filter for the sordid details. I need to warn you that my story will start innocently. However, do not fool yourself: it'll get worse every chapter, and so, there will be certainly many sordid details. I anticipate that: "In the controversial search for success, I draw my failure reaching for victories". Confusing, right? Accept to know me and you will understand!

Download or read book Love Like Salt written by Helen Stevenson and published by Virago. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHOSEN BY MAGGIE O'FARRELL IN THE GUARDIAN AS ONE OF HER BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR 'It's a slice of a life . . . a complex, intelligent, beautiful, thoughtful, rather lyrical book' -Cathy Rentzenbrink, author of The Last Act of Love 'A moving treatise on inheritance, not just of a disease like cystic fibrosis, but of our attitudes to living and loving, our sense of cultural and familial landscape, and how these intangibles pass down through generations. Stevenson picks apart her life like a strand of DNA to uncover just how we become the sum of our parts' Daily Telegraph 'A beautiful memoir . . . [Stevenson] is a novelist and a translator and her memoir is about translation in the larger sense. Translating the world is what we all do but she reminds us that one can hope - with a mind as intricately well read and original as hers - to translate misfortune; to absorb and see beyond it . . . Stevenson makes of poetry, fiction and philosophy a protective shawl for her story . . . Although intense she has a carefree wit' Kate Kellaway, Observer 'Love Like Salt is a human triumph ... Ultimately, Love Like Salt follows in the hallowed footsteps of Helen MacDonald's brilliant H is for Hawk or Cathy Rentzenbrink's The Last Act of Love. These are not misery memoirs but reminders that life comes in all shades - that in the darkest moments, beauty and humour can be found' Francesca Brown, Stylist 'Did Clara taste salty when I kissed her? She did. She tasted of mermaids, of the sea.' Love Like Salt is a deeply affecting memoir, beautifully and intelligently written. It is about mothers and daughters, music and illness, genes and inheritance, writing and story-telling. It is about creating joy from the hand you've been dealt and following its lead - in this case to rural France, where the author and her family lived for seven years. And back again. 'I had always written, and until the birth of Clara I wrote for a living. Once I knew the Cystic Fibrosis gene had unfolded itself in our daughter's body, like a paper flower meeting water, I felt that to write, even if I had had time, or been able, would have been to squander a kind of power which was needed for tending and nurturing. Every moment became a moment in which I protected my baby. Some of it I did in secret, like a madwoman muttering spells. I thought of her as a candle, cupping my hand around her. A beautifully written memoir, in the vein of H is for Hawk and The Last Act of Love, about motherhood, music and living the best life you can, even in the shadow of illness.
