I sat in my house protecting the noble house of Islam and guarding the Prophet of Allah, Muhammad ibn ' Abdullah (peace be upon him). That was not all that happened to me. Something even more wonderful happened; I saw the Prophet. I know that after the Prophet's death, millions will visit his grave to cry and pray.

While other surahs tend to jump between topics, this sura is special in sticking to its central theme throughout, telling a coherent story in chronological order. There is no confirmed time when surat Yusuf was revealed, but it is estimated to be either in the 10th or 11th year of dawah. In other words, it is known to have been revealed 2 or 3 years before the hijrah (Migration) from Makkah to Madina which is close to the end of the Makkan era and Makkan journey. This Sura was revealed after a year the scholars of seerah call 'am al huzun' (the year of Sorrow or Despair). This year was a sad and depressing time for Prophet Mohammad SAW.

Prophet Muhammad SAW, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, is the man beloved by more than 1.5 billion Muslims. He is the man who taught us patience in the face of adversity, and taught us to live in this world but seek eternal life in the hereafter. It was to Prophet Muhammad SAW that God revealed the Quran. Along with this Book of guidance God sent Prophet Muhammad SAW, whose behavior and high moral standards are an example to us all. Prophet Muhammad's life was the Quran. He understood it, he loved it and he lived his life based on its standards. He taught us to recite the Holy Quran, to live by its principles and to love it. When Muslims declare their faith in One God, they also declare their belief that Muhammad is the slave and final messenger of God.

Lebih dikenali sebagai Muhammad atau Nabi Muhammad SAW, baginda juga adalah pemimpin yang menyatukan Semenanjung Arab kepada satu tatanegara di bawah pemerintahan Islam. Nabi Muhammad SAW dianggap oleh umat Islam sebagai pemulih keimanan monoteistik ajaran nabi-nabi terdahulu yang dibawa oleh Nabi Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa dan nabi-nabi yang lain. Dilahirkan di Kota Suci Makkah, Semenanjung Arab, baginda adalah anak yatim piatu sejak kecil lagi dimana baginda dijaga oleh datuknya, Abdul Muttalib bin Hasyim dan seterusnya bapa saudara baginda, Abu Talib bin Abdul Muttalib. Baginda juga pernah bekerja sebagai pengembala kambing dan saudagar serta perkahwinan pertamanya adalah ketika berusia 25 tahun dimana baginda telah bernikah dengan Khadijah binti Khuwailid (40 tahun). Ketika Muhammad berumur 40 tahun, baginda telah menerima wahyu yang pertama daripada Tuhan melalui malaikat Jibril ketika sedang berada di Gua Hira. Tiga tahun setelah kejadian itu, baginda mula berdakwah secara terbuka kepada penduduk Makkah dengan mengatakan "Tuhan itu Esa" dan hendaklah menyerahkan diri sepenuhnya kepada Allah (secara harfiahnya membawa maksud Islam) dan ia adalah satu cara hidup (ad-Din) yang diterima Allah SWT sahaja. Nabi Muhammad SAW menerima beberapa orang pengikut pada awalnya yang terdiri daripada pelbagai golongan. Ajaran yang dibawa oleh baginda mendapat tentangan yang hebat dalam kalangan penduduk Makkah malahan mereka dilayan dengan teruk dan zalim. Oleh itu, Nabi Muhammad SAW telah menghantar beberapa orang pengikutnya ke Habsyah pada 614 M sebelum baginda dan pengikutnya lain di Makkah berhijrah ke Madinah (dahulu dikenali sebagai Yathrib) pada tahun 622 M. Peristiwa penghijrahan Muhammad itu menandakan permulaan bagi kalendar Islam atau takwim Hijrah. Di Madinah, Nabi Muhammad SAW telah menyatukan semua suku kaum dibawah Piagam Madinah.
