Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on lectures given at Claremont McKenna College, this text constitutes a substantial, abstract introduction to linear algebra. The presentation emphasizes the structural elements over the computational - for example by connecting matrices to linear transformations from the outset - and prepares the student for further study of abstract mathematics. Uniquely among algebra texts at this level, it introduces group theory early in the discussion, as an example of the rigorous development of informal axiomatic systems.

Book Lectures in Abstract Algebra

Download or read book Lectures in Abstract Algebra written by N. Jacobson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the second in the author's series of three dealing with abstract algebra. For an understanding of this volume a certain familiarity with the basic concepts treated in Volume I: groups, rings, fields, homomorphisms, is presupposed. However, we have tried to make this account of linear algebra independent of a detailed knowledge of our first volume. References to specific results are given occasionally but some of the fundamental concepts needed have been treated again. In short, it is hoped that this volume can be read with complete understanding by any student who is mathematically sufficiently mature and who has a familiarity with the standard notions of modern algebra. Our point of view in the present volume is basically the abstract conceptual one. However, from time to time we have deviated somewhat from this. Occasionally formal calculational methods yield sharper results. Moreover, the results of linear algebra are not an end in themselves but are essential tools for use in other branches of mathematics and its applications. It is therefore useful to have at hand methods which are constructive and which can be applied in numerical problems. These methods sometimes necessitate a somewhat lengthier discussion but we have felt that their presentation is justified on the grounds indicated. A stu dent well versed in abstract algebra will undoubtedly observe short cuts. Some of these have been indicated in footnotes. We have included a large number of exercises in the text.

Book Solving Algebraic Computational Problems in Geodesy and Geoinformatics

Download or read book Solving Algebraic Computational Problems in Geodesy and Geoinformatics written by Joseph L. Awange and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While preparing and teaching ‘Introduction to Geodesy I and II’ to - dergraduate students at Stuttgart University, we noticed a gap which motivated the writing of the present book: Almost every topic that we taughtrequiredsomeskillsinalgebra,andinparticular,computeral- bra! From positioning to transformation problems inherent in geodesy and geoinformatics, knowledge of algebra and application of computer algebra software were required. In preparing this book therefore, we haveattemptedtoputtogetherbasicconceptsofabstractalgebra which underpin the techniques for solving algebraic problems. Algebraic c- putational algorithms useful for solving problems which require exact solutions to nonlinear systems of equations are presented and tested on various problems. Though the present book focuses mainly on the two ?elds, theconceptsand techniquespresented hereinarenonetheless- plicable to other ?elds where algebraic computational problems might be encountered. In Engineering for example, network densi?cation and robotics apply resection and intersection techniques which require - gebraic solutions. Solution of nonlinear systems of equations is an indispensable task in almost all geosciences such as geodesy, geoinformatics, geophysics (just to mention but a few) as well as robotics. These equations which require exact solutions underpin the operations of ranging, resection, intersection and other techniques that are normally used. Examples of problems that require exact solutions include; • three-dimensional resection problem for determining positions and orientation of sensors, e. g. , camera, theodolites, robots, scanners etc. , VIII Preface • coordinate transformation to match shapes and sizes of points in di?erent systems, • mapping from topography to reference ellipsoid and, • analytical determination of refraction angles in GPS meteorology.

Book Foundations of Linear Algebra

Download or read book Foundations of Linear Algebra written by Jonathan S. Golan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extensively revised version of my textbook "¥esodot HaAlgebra HaLiniarit" (The Foundations of Linear Algebra) used at many universities in Israel. It is designed for a comprehensive one-year course in linear algebra (112 lecture hours) for mathematics majors. Therefore, I assume that the student already has a certain amount of mathematical background - including set theory, mathematical induction, basic analytic geometry, and elementary calculus - as wellas a modicum of mathematical sophistication. My intention is to provide not only a solid basis in the abstract theory of linear algebra, but also to provide examples of the application of this theory to other branches ofmathematics and computer science. Thus, for example, the introduction of finite fields is dictated by the needs of students studying algebraic coding theory as an immediate followup to their linear algebra studies. Many of the students studying linear algebra either are familiar with the care and feeding of computers before they begin their studies or are simultaneously en rolled in an introductory computer science course. Therefore, consideration of the more computational aspects of linear algebra - such as the solution of systems of linear equations and the calculation of eigenvalues - is delayed until all students are assumed able to write computer programs for this purpose. Beginning with Chap ter VII, there is an implicit assumption that the student has access to a personal computer and knows how to use it.

Book Introduction to Abstract and Linear Algebra

Download or read book Introduction to Abstract and Linear Algebra written by Zhexian Wan and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is known that linear algebra is a useful tool in engineering but, since the middle of this century, abstract linear algebra has also found more and more applications. For instance, finite fields play a prominent role in coding theory and ring theory is the foundation of linear systems over rings. Both linear and abstract algebra should now be in the curriculum of undergraduate engineering students. This introductory book on algebra aims to provide the basic material for such a course. It also constitutes a solid algebraic basis for the non-specialists who wish to become specialists in, for example, coding theory, cryptography and linear systems theory.
