The Registers of Kirkby Overblow contain an entry in 1651 of the marriage of Sarah Dodson with George Pickering. I have not been able to prove the identity of this daughter, but in the abovecited will of Thomas Dodson he mentions as supervisor "my kinsman Wm. Pickering," possibly a son of this match. Albany Dodson, of Low Hall, in early life made a voyage from Cork to the West Indies, and published an account of it. He was executor of his uncle Thomas Dodson's will and was residuary legatee. In February, 1718-19, he was visited by John Warburton, F.R.S. and F.S.A., who was shortly afterwards appointed Somerset Herald. Warburton made a poor and very insignificant drawing of the hall, hardly worth reproducing. It is preserved in the Lansdowne Collections at the British Museum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrant intellectual, social and political climate of mid eighteenth-century Europe presented opportunities and challenges for artists and musicians alike. This book focuses on Mozart the man and musician as he responds to different aspects of that world. It reveals his views on music, aesthetics and other matters; on places in Austria and across Europe that shaped his life; on career contexts and environments, including patronage, activities as an impresario, publishing, theatrical culture and financial matters; on engagement with performers and performance, focusing on Mozart's experiences as a practicing musician; and on reception and legacy from his own time through to the present day. Probing diverse Mozartian contexts in a variety of ways, the contributors reflect the vitality of existing scholarship and point towards areas primed for further study. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars of late eighteenth-century music and for Mozart aficionados and music lovers in general.

Book Effective Altruism and Religion

Download or read book Effective Altruism and Religion written by Dominic Roser and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new movement is on the scene: effective altruism-the combination of love and efficiency, making the world a better place not just with a bleeding heart and empathy but with a radical focus on reason and evidence and never losing sight of the goal of maximal impact. Its adherents typically stem from strongly secular environments such as elite philosophy departments or Silicon Valley. So far, a religious perspective on this movement has been lacking. What can people of faith learn from effective altruism, how can they contribute, and what must they criticise? This volume offers a first examination of these questions, providing both a Buddhist and an Orthodox Jewish perspective on them, in addition to various Christian contributions.

Book A History of Performing Pitch

Download or read book A History of Performing Pitch written by Bruce Haynes and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002-11-06 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haynes (U. of Montreal) traces the history of musical pitch standards over the last four centuries, linking frequency values to pitch names and telling where, when, and why various pitch levels have been used. With a focus on Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the Hapsburg lands, he covers the pitches of about 1,400 historical instruments and how the design and function influenced and were influenced by changes in pitch. In addition, he studies the effect of pitch differences on musical notation and choice of key. The author has also written a book on the oboe, the instrument that plays the "A" to which a symphony orchestra tunes. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: "An inspired and intuitive navigation of the drone continuum . . . with a compass firmly set to new and enlightening psychedelic truths"-- BECK In 1977 Sniffin' Glue verbalised the musical zeitgeist with their infamous 'this is a chord; this is another; now form a band' illustration. The drone requires neither chord nor band, representing - via its infinite pliability and accessibility - the ultimate folk music: a potent audio tool of personal liberation. Immersion in hypnotic and repetitive sounds allows us to step outside of ourselves, be it chant, a 120dB beasting from Sunn O))), standing front of the system as Jah Shaka drops a fresh dub or going full headphone immersion with Hawkwind. These experiences are akin to an audio portal - a sound Tardis to silence the hum and fizz of the unceasing inner voice. The drone exists outside of us, but also - paradoxically - within us all; an aural expression of a universal hum we can only hope to fleetingly channel. Monolithic Undertow is the definitive text to explore the music of drone and its related genres. Exhaustively researched this tome will not leave music fans interested in drone, doom, metal, and folk music unsatisfied.
