Book excerpt: Many scholars in Bible are interpreting the biblical text from newer interdisciplinary approaches. These disciplines, such as modern literary theory, sociology, and anthropology, have their own technical vocabulary, presuppositions, questions, and methodologies, which a biblical scholar must learn in order to appropriate these approaches for study of the biblical text. This book will introduce the student and the interested teacher to these new approaches, providing bibliography for further study in the method. Moreover, this book will actually apply the method to a particular text in the Book of Judges, so that the reader may see the method "in action."

Book Targum Jonathan of the Former Prophets

Download or read book Targum Jonathan of the Former Prophets written by and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attribution, by the Babylonian Talmud, of this Targum to Jonathan ben Uzziel is suspect on several counts: among others, the silence concerning Jonathan in the parallel passage in the Palestinian Talmud, and the fanciful suggestion that Onkelos=Aquila and Jonathan=Theodotion. The attribution, therefore, is not to be taken as historical fact. The Talmud may have been attempting to enhance the authority of the Targum by claiming authorship by a disciple of Hillel, which Jonathan was. It is generally agreed that the author of the Targum Jonathan is unknown; in fact, it is preferable to consider multiple authorship. For while language and translation techniques are uniform, there is variety from book to book.

Book Bible Figures of Speech

Download or read book Bible Figures of Speech written by Aaron Schroeder and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible figures of speech have been around since Adam. Who hasnt heard of the most famous tree, The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? And in a moment of defiance and rebellion, Cain asked God, Am I my brothers keeper? These two literary terms can be called figures of speech. They are examples of phrases that bring forth a particular meaning to he who hears them, and they become personal to each of us. What do these two figures of speech have in common? They were both written down or attributed to the same author, Moses. They both happened somewhere at a specific place, which was an event at a certain moment of time. They represent the divine nature of God and Gods relationship with man, or in literary terms, a character. While we dont always know the exact location or date, as with the early biblical writings, we do have a unifying anchor which is the Bible figure of speech. Considering the first Bible figure of speech, we have yet another image: In the beginning. Here we see God acting alone in creation at the beginning of time. It too provides us with a simple truth both unforgettable and personal. It speaks to our mind and our heart and soul as personal knowledge, which is outside of ration and have heaven and earth to bear witness. This is a Bible figure of speech.

Book Autumn Leave

Download or read book Autumn Leave written by Michele Guinness and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michele Guiness and her husband always believed they would live in France one day - but were amazed when a series of minor miracles made it possible to buy a house in the Limousin. In this frank and funny account of their ups and downs, based on Michele's diary of her husband's three-month sabbatical, we meet a host of extraordinary characters as she pursues the truth behind some of the hamlet's tortuous relationships, and meets the beleaguered French church. Setting up a new home, living in a different culture, and adapting to rural life was more stressful than she could have imagined. So was the local feuding, the potentially expensive legal wrangling, the moral dilemmas about owning land with their more furry neighbours. "A Year in Provence meets Finding Sanctuary. Fabulous insights into creating a new life and church - without being preachy. Excelllent story-telling. You can almost smell the hot croissants, fresh baguettes, wonderful cheeses and good red wine - as well as feel the pain of a struggling Christian community and laugh and cry at the DIY attempts. Classic page-turning Guinness!" - Cindy Kent, Premier Radio "Michele has produced a book in her usual style - bright, intelligent and always entertaining. A great read." - Adrian Plass
