Book Magnetohydrodynamic Stability of Tokamaks

Download or read book Magnetohydrodynamic Stability of Tokamaks written by Hartmut Zohm and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation. Again, examples from recent tokamak MHD such as sawteeth, CTMs, NTMs and their relation to disruptions are extensively discussed.

Book Instabilities in a Confined Plasma

Download or read book Instabilities in a Confined Plasma written by A.B Mikhailovskii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instabilities in a Confined Plasma is entirely devoted to a theoretical exposition of the subject of plasma instabilities in confined systems. The book is an important contribution to the study of plasma instabilities, not only in fusion devices such as the Tokamak but also in astrophysical phenomena. It covers toroidal confinement systems, internal MHD modes, small-scale MHD instabilities, MHD internal kink modes, MHD modes in collisionless and neoclassical regimes, drift-MHD modes, external kink modes, and Alfven eigenmodes.

Book Neoclassical Tearing Modes in a Tokamak

Download or read book Neoclassical Tearing Modes in a Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear tearing instability is studied in the banana collisionality regime in tokamak geometry. Neoclassical effects produce significant modifications of Ohm's law and the vorticity equation so that the growth rate of tearing modes driven by .delta.' is dramatically reduced compared to the usual resistive MHD value. Consequences of this result, regarding the presence of pressure-gradient-driven neoclassical resistive interchange instabilities and the evolution of magnetic islands in the Rutherford regime, are discussed. 10 refs.

Book excerpt: The tokamak is the principal tool in controlled fusion research. This book acts as an introduction to the subject and a basic reference for theory, definitions, equations, and experimental results. The fourth edition has been completely revised, describing their development of tokamaks to the point of producing significant fusion power.

Book Nonlinear Tearing Instabilities in Tokamaks with Locally Flattened Current Profiles

Download or read book Nonlinear Tearing Instabilities in Tokamaks with Locally Flattened Current Profiles written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear tearing stability is evaluated for current profiles which are linearly stabilized by flattening the current in the neighborhood of the rational surface. When marginally stable to the linear instability, these profiles remain unstable in the presence of a small but finite island. The growth of the island saturated only when the island reaches the width it would have attained in the absence of flattening. Implications are discused for proposed methods of tearing mode stabilization and for theories of the tokamak sawtooth oscillation. 19 refs., 1 fig.

Book Resistive Instabilities in Tokamaks

Download or read book Resistive Instabilities in Tokamaks written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-m tearing modes constitute the dominant instability problem in present-day tokamaks. In this lecture, the stability criteria for representative current profiles with q(0)-values slightly less than unit are reviewed; ''sawtooth'' reconnection to q(0)-values just at, or slightly exceeding, unity is generally destabilizing to the m = 2, n = 1 and m = 3, n = 2 modes, and severely limits the range of stable profile shapes. Feedback stabilization of m greater than or equal to 2 modes by rf heating or current drive, applied locally at the magnetic islands, appears feasible; feedback by island current drive is much more efficient, in terms of the radio-frequency power required, then feedback by island heating. Feedback stabilization of the m = 1 mode - although yielding particularly beneficial effects for resistive-tearing and high-beta stability by allowing q(0)-values substantially below unity - is more problematical, unless the m = 1 ideal-MHD mode can be made positively stable by strong triangular shaping of the central flux surfaces. Feedback techniques require a detectable, rotating MHD-like signal; the slowing of mode rotation - or the excitation of non-rotating modes - by an imperfectly conducting wall is also discussed.

Book Resistive Instabilities in a Tokamak

Download or read book Resistive Instabilities in a Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of resistive instability theory shows that toroidal effects can stabilize the tearing mode in devices like the Princeton Large Torus. Contraction of the current channel is destabilizing. Finite fluid compressibility is crucial to this phenomenon. (auth).
