Book excerpt: Kingston, a city since 1846 Kingston was successively an Indian encampment, a French fort and trading post, a United Empire Loyalist settlement and a British garrison town. Kingston owed its continuing military and commercial importance to its strategic position at the head of the St. Lawrence River and the foot of the Great Lakes. From 1841-1844, Kingston was the capital of the United Province of Canada. Late in the nineteenth century, Kingston declined as a port and transportation centre; it has become a city of institutions and service industries - recreation, education, military, penal and health care. The largest Loyalist Corps in the Northern Department during the American Revolution, the King's Royal Regiment of New York, was raised on June 19, 1776 under the command of Sir John Johnson. Originally composed of one battalion with ten companies, a second battalion was added in 1780. The regiment known as the "Royal Yorkers" participated in the bitter war fought on the colonial frontier, conducting raids against settlements in New York and employed in garrison duty. When active campaigning ceased in 1783, the regiment assumed various responsibilities, notably the establishment of a base in Kingston in preparation for the settlement of the Loyalists. In 1846 Edward Horsey designed and built Elizabeth Cottage (Page 32) as his architectural office and home for his wife Jane and their seven children. The Gothic Revival style was novel for Kingston House at this time. His design features lacy verge boards and strong finials accenting the parapeted front wall (low wall at edge of roof), quatrefoils, crenellations, a variety of decorative window types, including oriel, pointed-arch, and bay windows enlivened with label moldings and tracery. Below the oriel window is a verandah with openwork buttresses as posts.

Before that, British North America was made up of a few provinces, the vast area of Rupert's Land (privately owned by the Hudson's Bay Company), and the North-Western Territory. By 1864, many leaders felt it would be good to join into one country. These leaders met and wrote a constitution for the new country, which had to be passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Once passed, it became known as the British North America Act which brought together the three provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada (which became the provinces of Ontario and Quebec). Manitoba and the Northwest Territories joined in 1870, British Columbia in 1871, Prince Edward Island in 1873, Yukon Territory in 1898, Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905, Newfoundland and Labrador not until 1949, and Nunavut separated from the Northwest Territories as its own unit in 1999. In the 1890s, when Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier spoke of making Ottawa a "Washington of the North," he wanted a new architectural style for the Capital that was distinct from American and older British models, in pursuit of grandeur. In 1982, the Queen and the Right Honourable Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister, signed the Constitution Act, 1982 to make Canada an independent nation. The Heritage Building is today part of Ottawa City Hall. It was originally built in 1874 as Ottawa Normal School and served as a teacher's college. The Gothic Revival building stands at Elgin and Lisgar Streets; several extensions were added to the rear of the building. In the 1960s the Ontario's teachers' colleges were merged into universities and this one was merged into the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa in 1974.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oshawa is a city in Southern Ontario on the Lake Ontario shoreline. It is about sixty kilometres east of Downtown Toronto. The name Oshawa comes from the Ojibwa work meaning "the crossing place" or "where we must leave our canoes." More than 5,000 people work and more than 2,400 university students study in the downtown core. Oshawa's roots are tied to the automobile industry with the Canadian division of General Motors located here. It was founded in 1876 as the McLaughlin Carriage Company. The lavish home of the carriage company's founder, Parkwood Estate, is a National Historic Site of Canada. Historians believe that Oshawa began as a transfer point for the fur trade. Beaver and other animals trapped for their pelts by local natives were traded with the Coureurs des bois (voyagers). Furs were loaded onto canoes by the Mississauga Indians at the Oshawa harbor and transported to the trading posts located to the west at the mouth of the Credit River. Around 1760, the French constructed a trading post near the harbor location; this was abandoned after a few years, but its ruins provided shelter for the first residents of what later became Oshawa. In the late eighteenth century a local resident, Roger Conant, started an export business shipping salmon to the United States. His success attracted further migration into the region. A large number of the founding immigrants were United Empire Loyalists, who left the United States to live under British rule. Later Irish and then French Canadian immigration increased as did industrialization. Oshawa and the surrounding Ontario County were the settling grounds of a large number of nineteenth century Cornish immigrants. The surveys ordered by Governor John Graves Simcoe, and subsequent land grants, helped populate the area. When Col. Asa Danforth laid out his York-to-Kingston road, it passed through the Oshawa area. In 1822, a "colonization road" (a north-south road to facilitate settlement) known as Simcoe Street was constructed. It ran from the harbor to the area of Lake Scugog. It intersected the "Kingston Road: at what became Oshawa's "Four Corners." In 1846 there were about 1,000 people in a community surrounded by farms. There were three churches, a post office, tradesmen of various types, a foundry, a grist mill and a fulling mill, a brewery, two distilleries, a machine shop and four cabinet makers. The newly established village became an industrial center, and implement works, tanneries, asheries and wagon factories opened. In 1876, Robert Samuel McLaughlin, Sr. moved his carriage works to Oshawa from Enniskillen to take advantage of its harbor and of the availability of a rail link not too far away. He constructed a two-storey building, which was soon added to. This building was heavily remodeled in 1929, receiving a new facade and being extended to the north. Around 1890, the carriage works relocated from its Simcoe Street address to an unused furniture factory a couple of blocks to the northeast, and this remained its site until the building burnt in 1899. Offered assistance by the town, McLaughlin chose to stay in Oshawa, building a new factory across Mary Street from the old site. Rail service had been provided in 1890 by the Oshawa Railway; this was originally set up as a streetcar line, but by about 1910 a second freight line was built slightly to the east of Simcoe Street which provided streetcar and freight service, connected central Oshawa with the Grand Trunk (now Canadian National) Railway, and with the Canadian Northern (which ran through the very north of Oshawa) and the Canadian Pacific, built in 1912-13.

The GREC workshops provide an opportunity for researchers at all levels of experience to share insights into graphics recognition methods. The workshops enjoy strongparticipation from researchers in both industry and academia. They are sponsored by IAPR TC-10, the Technical Committee on Graphics Recog- tion within the International Association for Pattern Recognition. Edited v- umes from the previous three workshops in this series are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vols. 1072, 1389, and 1941. After the GREC 2001 workshop, authors were invited to submit enhanced versions of their papers for review. Every paper was evaluated by three reviewers. We are grateful to both authors and reviewers for their careful work during this review process. Many of the papers that appear in this volume were thoroughly revised and improved, in response to reviewers’ suggestions.

Our acceptance rate of about half of the submissions, demonstrates the scientific quality of the programme and in particular the proceedings you have in your hands. An impressive group of experts agreed to organize “Special Thematic Sessions” (STS) for ICCHP 2008. The existence of these STS sessions helped to bring the me- ing into sharper focus in several key areas of assistive technology. In turn, this deeper level of focus helped to bring together the state-of-the-art and mainstream technical, social, cultural and political developments. Our keynote speaker, Jim Fruchterman from BeneTech, USA highlighted the - portance of giving access to ICT and AT at a global level. In another keynote by H- old Thimbleby, Swansea University, UK, the role of user-centred design and usability engineering in assistive technology and accessibility was addressed. And finally, a combination keynote and panel discussion was reserved for WAI/WCAG2.0, which we expect to be the new reference point for Web accessibility from the summer of 2008 and beyond.
