As this was the new Principal's first address at a Convocation of Queen's, it was looked forward to with more than ordinary interest. To say that the Principal fully realized the expecta tions of his warmest friends is not unduly praising this, his first baccalaureate address. His remarks were replete With sound advice, placed before the graduating class a high and exalted ideal of the profession they had chosen, was clothed in well chosen language, displayed a knowledge of the Medical profession which must have astonished the student, was replete with humor and at times was truly eloquent. The unanimous Opinion of those who heard him, was that Principal Gordon was a worthy successor of his worthy predecessor, and that the interests of Queen's were more than safe in his hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kingston Medical Quarterly, Vol. 6: April, 1902 Dominion Government and ask that Ontario should be de prived of the rights guaranteed her at the time of Confederation and the Dominion Government should say Well, we don't wish to assume any responsibility in this matter. Go home and vote on the question. If your votes are in favour of de priving Ontario of her guaranteed rights we will consider the matter. Now in such a case Ontario would be in a much better position than are the Educational institutions, because cverv voter in Ontario would have a voice to raise against the wrong proposed to be done her, and no Parliament could af ford to disregard the voice of the numerically largest factor in the Dominion. \vere it proposed to do anything of the nature supposed every voice in Ontario would cry out against it. Yet when it is proposed to follow this very course as regards the numerically weak there are to be found men in the profession and in the Legislature who are ready to hold up their hands and say it is right. It is just. Notwithstanding the fact that there are in the profession and in the Legislature a few purblind individuals who ap parently are dead to all sense of justice and fair play, we are are persuaded they will not succeed, but the rights guaranteed to the Educational institutions and to the homoeopathic prae titioners will be maintained. Otherwise, these bodies would have no other course to adopt than to demand the restoration of those rights and privileges enjoyed by them previous to the formation of the Council and voluntarily given up by them in the interest of the Medical profession and the general public. This, we feel confident, neither of them wish to do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kingston Medical Quarterly, Vol. 4: July, 1900 The following paper may be considered as a summary ofthe results of the writer's observations. The problem of Sewage Purification, has been given more. Or less study by Municipal Engineers, Chemists, Sanitary Boards and others interested in sanitary improvements for many years, in all portions of the civilized world, but in no country has it been given so close attention as in Great Britain. The density of the population, the great volume of the liquid wastes, the small size Of the streams into which sewage could be discharged, and the limited areas from which water supplies could be drawn, have all contributed to the development and extension of sewage purification works that have become models for the world. As a corollary to these conditions, the general public in England has been educated to the necessity of such works, and the vast sums now being expended on sanitary works by different cities and towns have been voted by the ratepayers ungrudgingly. In no country have so many experiments been made, in no country have so many failures been recorded as in England. Patented processes have from time to time been received with favor, but in most cases, only to be discarded within a few years for Simpler or less expensive methods. Land treatment has been recognized for many years as the most economical method of disposing of sewage and as giving the best results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kingston Medical Quarterly, Vol. 2: January, 1898 Treatment-m1 will now pass on to the treatment, and I might here affirm what a celebrated author has said, that. No one should attend an obstetrical case who has not a clearly defined programme to be put into immediate execution, should the dangerous complication arise, for in no other disease is time of such paramount importance as when the widely opened blood vessels are pouring forth the vital fluid, when seconds are as minutes and minutes hours, when either nature or the attend ant must promptly interfere, else another soul will have joined the silent majority, and we have another failure to record. Over and above our good advice we prescribe some simple drug which in itself can do neither good nor harm. The patient takes the drug and follows the advice and gets well and gives the credit to the drug. Thus is the belief in the efficacy of drugs fostered and increased in the minds of the laity. Such a patient would not have done so well without the drug. He would not have fol lowed our advice. He would in all probability have gone to some other physician who giving him the placebo would have added to his reputation at the expense of ours. Such a use of a drug is in my opinion not only not harmful, but actually beneficial. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kingston Medical Quarterly, Vol. 3: January, 1899 Announcement. In the curriculum, as now prescribed, we find that the members of the Council have at last endorsed our views to a certain extent. We now find that a student in order to pro cure a license must attend two courses of six or eight months, each consisting of fifty lectures and demonstrations in Pathology, and one course of three or four months, consisting of twenty five lectures and demonstrations in Bacteriology. In the quarterly of January, 1898, we strongly urged upon_ the Council the advisability of requiring the student to devote more time to the study of these two important subjects. We do not presume that what we then said had the effect of bringing about the change. Probably the members of the Council never read the quarterly. However they were induced to make the change we know not nor do we care. Sufficient for us is the fact that the change has been made, and that two of the most important subjects in the whole range of medical science have now been allotted more time in the Medical Curriculum. Of course it is gratifying to find that opinions which we enunciated a year ago have now been adopted, and, as a consequence, all candidates for a license will have a fair knowledge of these two essentials of a medical education.
