Book Cap badges of the British Army

Download or read book Cap badges of the British Army written by G L D Alderson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army has always set great store by its cap badges, which , in miniature, encapsulated the history and traditions of the units that wore them. They were worn with pride by the County regiments (that formed the bulk of the infantry) throughout the two world wars. Here is a comprehensive illustrated collection of the cap badges of the Second World War, the images taken from the author’s own collection. The commentary on each badge explains the joining together of battalions as the war progressed and a regimental index makes finding the badges easy. This is a complex subject clarified in one volume for the first time.

Book Slaughter on the Somme 1 July 1916

Download or read book Slaughter on the Somme 1 July 1916 written by Martin Mace and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 07.30 hours on 1 July 1916, the devastating cacophony of the Allied artillery fell silent along the front on the Somme. The ear-splitting explosions were replaced by the shrill sound of hundreds of whistles being blown. At that moment, tens of thousands of British soldiers climbed out from the trenches on their part of the Western Front, and began to make their way steadily towards the German lines opposite. It was the first day of the Battle of the Somme.By the end of the day, a number of the regiments involved had met with some degree of success; others had suffered heavy losses for no gain, whilst a few quite literally ceased to exist. That day, the old infantry tactics of the British Army clashed head-on with the reality of modern warfare. On what is generally accepted as the worst day in the British Armys history, there were more than 60,000 casualties a third of them fatal. In this publication, the authors have drawn together, for the first time ever, all the War Diary entries for 171 British Regiments that went over the top that day a day that even now still touches so many families both in the United Kingdom and around the world. The result will be a vital work of reference to the events of 1 July 1916, a valuable information source for not only for those interested in military history, but genealogists and historians alike.

Book Bloodline

    Book Details:
  • Author : Iain Gordon
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2010-06-15
  • ISBN : 1844684806
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Bloodline written by Iain Gordon and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the history of each of the British Army’s regular formations, from their origins to their development over time. Using easy-to-follow, family-tree type tables, Bloodline shows the origins and development of every regular formation in the British Army including the latest amalgamations and changes brought about within the “Future Army Structure.” The charts illustrate clearly how, in some cases, up to twenty-five original regiments of the line have, over the centuries, by successive disbandments and amalgamations, been reduced to a single regiment in today’s superb but shamefully overstretched army. The Battle Honours of each post-Cardwell constituent are recorded separately so the progress of each of the original regiments, and the theatres in which it was involved, may be examined individually. The pedigrees and Honours of disbanded units are also recorded so their contribution will not be lost to posterity. A chronological summary of Battle honours provides an overview of the British Army’s campaigns over the past 300 years and notes on the origins of each formation place its original purpose within the political and historical perspective of the time. A robust editorial platform throughout applauds the Army as “the Nation’s most dependable and trustworthy institution” and castigates government neglect and public indifference for the unnecessary “blood and sacrifices” which successive generations of soldiers have had to make as a result of inadequate investment and preparation. Bloodline is a splendid record of achievement and will provide an invaluable work of reference for anyone who has dealings with, or simply an interest in or affection for, the British Army. Praise for Bloodlines “I know of no other resource that contains such a wealth of information about the History of the Regiments of the British Army. This will be a very useful addition to my shelf of military reference books.” —Daly History Blog “If you conduct research into the main elements of the British Army then this is an invaluable guide as to their lineage, hereditary and modern counterparts. The author has produced an outstanding reference text in one easy to follow volume. He has done great service to aiding researchers with this publication. In one excellent volume he has listed the principal elements of the Army and their histories. This concise volume deserves space on any serious researcher’s shelf.” —Military Archive Research

Book HMS Turbulent

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Wynn
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword Maritime
  • Release : 2023-03-09

  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book HMS Turbulent written by Stephen Wynn and published by Pen and Sword Maritime. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HMS Turbulent was a Royal Navy T-class submarine. From its launch in May 1941 to when it was lost at sea, along with its entire crew, in March 1943, it was responsible for the sinking of nearly 100,000 tons of enemy shipping. Besides the number of enemy vessels it sunk, HMS Turbulent has gone down in history for the attack on the Italian merchant vessel the Nino Bixio, which at the time was carrying more than 3,000 Allied POWs who had been captured during the fighting in North Africa. Having left the Libyan port of Benghazi on 16 August 1942, accompanied by the Italian cargo vessel the Sestriere, the Nino Bixio was attacked the following day. A total of 336 Allied POWs, most of whom were either Australian or New Zealanders, were killed or died of their wounds in the explosion. Although badly damaged, the Nino Bixio stayed afloat and was towed to Navarino, in southern Greece, where the surviving POWs disembarked. The wounded were treated in hospital, while the rest were shipped on to POW camps in Bari, Italy. Although there have been different theories put forward as to how HMS Turbulent met its end off the Italian coast in 1943, there is still no absolute certainty as to where, when and how the boat and its crew were lost.
