Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cabbages and Kings William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) published all of his work - a novel and some 300 short stories - under the pseudonym O. Henry. His talent for vivid caricature, local tone, narrative agility, and compassion tempered by irony made him a vastly popular writer in the last decade of his life. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, to ordinary middle-class parents and worked in an uncle's drugstore as a youth, becoming a certified pharmacist. Like many Southerners after the Civil War, he sought his fortune in the West, holding various jobs (newspaper work, clerking in a land office, a teller at an Austin bank). Charged with embezzlement in 1894, he fled to Honduras, returning in 1897 to be with his ill and dying wife. His conviction was caused more by his eluding trial than by the conflicting evidence of theft. In the Ohio State Penitentiary (1898-1901), he began to write the stories that made him famous. He moved to New York, remarried, and kept his identity a secret from all but a few friends. He is buried in Asheville, North Carolina. Kings In the Hebrew Scriptures, this Book and the following make but one, named, - in Jewish fashion, by the first words, which are translated in our version, "Now King David." The Septuagint calls it the Third Book of Reigns, - the Vulgate, the Third Book of Kings, - and the Arabic, the Book of Solomon, (he being the most important of the monarchs whose reigns it recounts). The exact date of the compilation of the Book is not, of course, known; but, if it was, as we think, the work of Ezra, it may be safely supposed to have been written by him after his return from Babylon, with the second caravan of Jews, 458 B.C. The authorship of the work is more disputed than that of any of the historical books of the Bible. - The Jews ascribe it to Jeremiah; - some believe that David and Solomon wrote the accounts of their reigns; while others imagine that the book was written in portions by the prophets who lived under the respective Kings; and that the complete work was compiled thence, and from the national records kept by the scribes, by one person, (probably Ezra). This last view seems correct, for, 1. We read, in I. Kings, and II. Chron., of the "acts" of different monarchs being recorded in the "books" of various prophets, (such as Nathan, Ahijah, Shemaiali, and Iddo), and in "the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah," and "of Israel."
