Book Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 2009

Download or read book Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 2009 written by International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 2780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published since 1950, this authoritative, annual reference is based upon a unique IMF database that tracks exchange and trade arrangements for all 185 IMF member countries, along with Hong Kong SAR, Aruba, and the Netherlands Antilles. The Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions (AREAER) draws together information available to the IMF from a number of sources, including during official IMF staff visits to member countries. There is a separate chapter for each of the 187 countries included, and these are presented in a clear, easy-to-read tabular format. A summary table allows for simple cross-country comparisons of key features of their exchange and trade regimes. The report's introduction summarizes recent global trends and developments. It discusses such topical issues as exchange rate arrangements, current or capital transactions, or prudential regulations. The individual country chapters outline exchange measures in place, the structure and setting of exchange rates, arrangements for payments and receipts, procedures for resident and nonresident accounts, mechanisms for import and export payments and receipts, controls on capital transactions, and provisions specific to the financial sector. The report now provides more detailed information on the operations of foreign exchange markets and exchange rate mechanisms and better describes the regulatory framework for current and capital account transactions.

The external current account surplus now exceeds 10 percent of GDP, led by an improving trade balance. Labor slack and the large output gap have pushed down core inflation, raising real interest rates. Growth is expected to reach 0.8 percent in 2014 before rising gradually to 1.2 percent in 2015, supported by rising exports and a modest recovery in housing prices. Investment is projected to remain subdued owing to weak domestic demand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands is an AAA euro area (EA) economy with significant private sector imbalances. The main policy challenge is to restore growth and manage downside risks while allowing for an orderly adjustment of private sector balance sheets. A focus on medium-term objectives will cement policy credibility and mitigate uncertainty. The financial system must reduce its dependence on wholesale financing, and banks reliant on public sector support need to wind down this support. Reforms in the labor markets and human capital will be important in safeguarding the economy’s growth potential.

Book Market Based Banking and the International Financial Crisis

Download or read book Market Based Banking and the International Financial Crisis written by Iain Hardie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics and political economy lack the analytical tools to explain the differing impact of the recent international financial crisis that erupted in 2007 on developed economies. The principal contribution of this edited volume is to offer a 'market-based banking' framework which transcends the dominant dichotomous understanding of financial systems in terms of credit-based and capital-based. It demonstrates why this dichotomy is obsolete through an appreciation of the activities of banks. Further, it employs 'market-based banking' to overcome the inability of existing typologies to explain financial system change. 'Market-based banking' provides a framework that is more reflective of banking in modern financial systems, and one that provides a more successful explanation of the differential impact of the recent financial crisis. The comparative and single-country chapters in this volume compare the extent of 'market-based banking' across eleven countries, including all of the G7 economies. The chapters also consider the impact of the financial crisis in terms of necessary government support and lending to non-financial companies. The edited volume includes work by authors who are widely respected experts in national political economies, finance, financial regulation, banking, central banking, and monetary policy. This volume is one of the first book-length comparative studies of the financial crisis and its impact and one of the few recent comparative studies of national banking / financial systems in any discipline.

Book Archipelago Tourism Revisited

Download or read book Archipelago Tourism Revisited written by Godfrey Baldacchino and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and innovative book explores the dynamics of inter-island/island-island tourism – also known as archipelago tourism – on the cusp of the post-pandemic epoch. Embellished with illustrative maps and diagrams, the volume examines what novel approaches have been developed, if at all, so as not to repeat past mistakes, and nurture a more sustainable, 'island tourism' business model. It looks at how the political-economic relationship between main and outer islands changed during the pandemic and, if so, whether this shift has had a bearing on current tourism policy. The book also explores how these and other changes are reflected in how: islands are branded; island destinations are marketed; and island transport logistics play out. An array of archipelagos of varying sizes and locations is explored, assuring a global perspective. The book furthers our understanding of core-periphery dynamics in archipelago tourism. The volume will be of interest to students, researchers, policy makers and academics in the fields of tourism policy and planning, sustainability, island studies and development studies.

This book was released on 2024-04-08 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economy has cooled, but signs of overheating remain. After two years of strong recovery, growth decelerated in 2023, reflecting the energy shock, tighter financial conditions, and a slowdown in key trading partners, particularly Germany. Still, core inflation remains elevated, reflecting a tight labor market, robust wage growth, and healthy profit margins. Fragmented results in November elections are leading to a prolonged government formation, with possible implications for pro-growth and climate policies.
