Book excerpt: J.L. King examines how Black culture and Black lives are affected by the stereotyped CP time. Everyone has a story of being the victim of CP time, also known as colored people's time, a term that refers to the negative stereotype that Black and African Americans are always late. It's been responsible for the termination of jobs and relationships, and for delaying weddings and even funerals. CP Time is the first book to examine a behavior that crosses all social economic lines within the black community in a way that will bring smiles and groans of recognition to victims and culprits alike. In brisk, engaging chapters, J.L. King provides humorous examples and personal stories, voicing the opinions of those who view habitual lateness as just part of being black, and those who see it as a more serious problem. Recounting the reasons and excuses offered in CP time's defense, King provides a wry and often hilarious history of how and why the phenomenon began. Light-hearted yet enlightening, CP Time makes a perfect gift for the chronically tardy—and all those affected by them.

Download or read book TIME Martin Luther King Jr written by The Editors of TIME and published by Time Inc. Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after his death, the principles and vision of Martin Luther King Jr. continue to be a guiding light for many leaders and many Americans. In a life cut far too short—he was assassinated at age 39—King left a legacy through his remarkable dedication to nonviolent protest, his clear righteousness and his powerful words. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” that criticized the pace of civil rights justice, his stirring “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, the march he led from Selma to Montgomery: these were just some of the moments and events that defined his extraordinary life. On the 50th anniversary of that fateful day in Memphis, this new TIME special edition recalls what King accomplished in his time. He lived long enough to win the Nobel Peace Prize—and to shift the course of history.

Book King Lear in our Time

Download or read book King Lear in our Time written by Maynard Mack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition first published in 1966. Previous edition published 1965 by the University of California Press. Perhaps more than any other play of Shakespeare's King Lear has been subjected to almost totally contradictory interpretations. In the first historical section of the book the author describes the varying concepts of the play and the distortions of text and even plot that have been widely used. Garrick's playing of Lear as a pathetic and down-trodden old man. Laughton's and Olivier's versions and Herbert Blaus's theory of the 'subtext' are described and analysed. The central section of the book examines the medieval, folk and romance sources of the play. The final chapter illustrates how the action of the play and its pervading violence and evil are not explained in terms of human motive and rely for their meaning more on their effects than their antecedents. An important theme is the play's examination of society and the ties of service and family love.
