Download or read book Chaos Kings written by Scott Patterson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Bestseller Written by a veteran Wall Street Journal reporter, this is a fascinating deep dive into the world of billion-dollar traders and high-stakes crisis predictors who strive to turn extreme events into financial windfalls. There’s no doubt that our world has gotten more extreme. Pandemics, climate change, superpower rivalries, cyberattacks, political radicalization—virtually, everywhere we look there is mayhem bearing down on us, putting trillions of assets at risk. And at least two factions have formed around how to respond. In Chaos Kings, Scott Patterson depicts how one faction, led by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, bestselling author of The Black Swan, believes humans can never see the big disaster coming. In their view, extreme events—so-called Black Swans—while inevitable, will always catch us by surprise. In 2007, Taleb’s longtime collaborator, Mark Spitznagel, launched the Universa hedge fund, which would go on to make billions protecting investors against unforeseen chaos in the market. A second faction, which relies on complex formulas, believes looming chaos can be detected. Chief among these risk prognosticators is Didier Sornette, a colorful French mathematician who enjoys riding his motorcycle at speeds in excess of 170 miles per hour. When Sornette looks out from what he calls his Financial Crisis Observatory in Zurich, Switzerland, what he sees are Dragon Kings—punishing events that are unlikely to occur but have probabilities that can be predicted…and defended against. Which faction is right? All of our financial futures may depend on the answer.

Download or read book Coaching Kings written by La Vada D. Humphrey and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the "Changing of the Guards"! It is apparent that the 21st Century is faced with new challenges that has affected every market, culture, and even spheres of influence. Does God have a plan for the nations, and those who will lead the way? Of course He does, and when the "guards change" so does the rules of engagement. If you've desired to change nations, the way business is conducted, and religion, it all starts with a 21st Century King, Leader and Reformer. Men and women who pave the way for nations are kings and reformers of their day. In her authoritative style, La Vada D. Humphrey enlarges the readers mind-sets to establish a footprint in the earth to reposition nations, and business systems that require reforming. She declares that there will be men and women who are in the "business for the Business" as God ushers them in to their sphere of influence. She challenges the emerging change- agents wearing mantles to reform and lead to fill the sits of modern day Josiah's, Esther's, Nehemiah's and David's - all who ultimately changed the world and repositioned the kingdom. Coaching Kings is about "troubleshooters" in the marketplace. Men and women who will break glass ceilings, question the unquestionable and take on national crisis for the Kingdom of God. If you're a business man, Pastor, Politician, Judge, entrepreneur or one who feels that God has "chosen" you for such a time as this, perhaps you're the reformer that shall arise to occasion in the marketplace.

Samantha Anders is over the BS in her life. She can't count the number of times Cardinal Sun mages have attacked her, threatened her, and been a general pain in her ass. Being the only Sibyl has made her life a living hell. It isn't like she asked for the ability to see across time. When the ancient magic of Chaos flares, Sam is dragged back sixteen hundred years into the past and thrown at the mercy of new enemies. If that isn't bad enough, Jeph, the self-confident mage trying to kill her, is taken along for the ride. Luckily for Sam, he needs to keep her alive in order to get home. Unfortunately, he's a rude, obnoxious flirt who likes to kill people-which would be fine, except altering the past means irrevocably changing their future. If they can survive the Dark Ages, they'll be forced to face each other?and the war within their hearts.
Download or read book 1 2 Kings written by Lynn Jost and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence on the streets. Military expansion. Consumerism. Policies exploiting people and natural resources. Harassment and abuse: 1 & 2 Kings could hardly be more relevant. In the thirty-fourth volume of the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, Old Testament scholar Lynn Jost claims 1 & 2 Kings were written to form a community that would embrace the Ten Commandments and the Great Shema and would champion righteousness and compassion. Jost traces the characteristics of royal justice, with its systems of excess and indulgence, as well as the court intrigue, succession politics, interfamily rivalries, and prophetic judgment that mark the books. Through it all, Israel remains in a covenant relationship with a delivering God. Through it all, God calls the leaders and the people to practice justice, protect shalom, and live righteously. In vivid and accessible prose, Jost invites pastors, scholars, and lay readers to read 1 & 2 Kings as books of promise—ones that gesture toward a faithful God who rescues, judges, commands, and provides. About the Believers Church Bible Commentary series This readable commentary series is for all who seek more fully to understand the original message of Scripture and its meaning for today—Sunday school teachers, members of Bible study groups, students, pastors, and other seekers. –From the Series Foreword

Download or read book The Trouble with Kings written by Stephen McKenzie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the composition of the book of Kings and its implications for the Deuteronomistic History (DH) of which it is a part. McKenzie analyses Kings on the basis of Noth's model of a single author/editor behind the original DH. He contends that the Deuteronomist (Dtr) wrote the series of oracles against the Northern royal houses without utilizing a prior, running prophetic document that some scholars have posited behind Samuel and Kings. He regards many other prophetic stories in Kings, including most of the Elijah and Elisha legends as later additions to the DH, in accord with Noth's recognition that the original DH was frequently supplemented by various writers. McKenzie illustrates Dtr's compositional techniques in a treatment of the accounts of Hezekiah and Josiah in Kings. He tentatively dates Dtr to Josiah's reign but believes that tensions among the many later additions to the work, including the report from Josiah's death on, suggest that they are not the result of systematic editing (e.g., Dtr2). The book offers the most up-to-date survey of research on the DH and the most recent detailed analysis of the lengthy variant version of Jeroboam's reign in LXXB at 1 Kings 12:24a-z. It offers a fresh perspective on the original shape of the DH based on recent scholarship and the author's own critical investigation.

Book excerpt: Engages the reader by amplifying the biblical resonances echoing in our own world today by disclosing how God's Word is embodied and made known by those we least expect. The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings. In addition to providing basic information and insights into the Old Testament writings, these commentaries exemplify the tasks and procedures of careful interpretation, to assist students of the Old Testament in coming to an informed and critical engagement with the biblical texts themselves. This study of the Books of Kings unfolds with attention and sensitivity to the immense literary artistry that craft these narratives. While setting forth the literary and theological significance of these traditions concerning the major figures in these canonical books, i.e. Israel's Kings, this commentary consistently trains our attention upon the minor characters also resident in these stories. Fixing upon these individuals as well as the prophets, the exegetical discussion often discloses how God's Word is embodied and made known by those we might least expect. While steadfastly avoiding analogical readings, the theological and ethical exposition skillfully engage the reader by amplifying the resonances in these texts echoing in our own world today. The present volume gives an up-to-date, readable commentary on the books of 1-2 Kings. The commentary covers critical issues section by section while emphasizing the larger theological and literary issues in Kings and illustrating its relevance for modern readers.
