As the People of the Hawaiian Kingdom await with an affectionately loyal interest the return of their Sovereign from his tour round the world, it was to meet the expectation of the hour, that this slight sketch, or outline of His Majesty's travel was prepared; to be distributed on the day of the King's return to his capital, so that not only the Hawaiian resident, eager to recall to mind, the particulars of the royal journey, but also the stranger who might happen in our midst, should have in compact form, information of the King's movements abroad, and of the important objects, which animated a patriotic Hawaiian Chief to undertake the great journey. About one year ago, the King's health had been unfavorably affected; and it was manifest, that a pleasant change, and complete relief from the cares of State, were necessary to restore His Majesty to his wonted vigor and healthful tone. But, King Kalakaua, more alive to the interests of his State, than to the care of his person, would not consent to go abroad merely as an invalid tourist; but determined that his journey should be made subservient to the welfare of his Kingdom; and he undertook the arduous tour chiefly with a view to promote the re-population of his realm. King Kalakaua is the first and only Monarch who has made the tour of the world; and his journey was undertaken for the greatest and noblest purpose, that could animate a King. Looking to ancient times, we find a King of Ithaca who undertook an expedition to settle a point of honor, that affected his neighbor; or an Alexander who marched through Asia to leave a track of desolation behind; and in modern times, we see an adventuring Charles of Sweden, while madly seeking to destroy his neighbors, meet with his own destruction; or a Shah of Persia, traveling to squander barbaric wealth, and to display barbaric tastes; or an Emperor of Brazil, an enlightened and humane man; but who goes abroad to attend scientific congresses and gratify his taste for scientific lore; whereas our Hawaiian King, -our enlightened and humane Pacific Monarch, goes abroad solely for the purpose of benefitting his Kingdom, to promote the welfare of his people; and to make good the noble motto, and device, proclaimed at his accession, -"Hooulu Lahui!"-Increase The Nation!

Beginning with an overview of Kalākaua’s literary genealogy of misrepresentation, Tiffany Lani Ing surveys the negative, even slanderous, portraits of him that have been inherited from his enemies, who first sought to curtail his authority as mō‘ī through such acts as the 1887 Bayonet Constitution and who later tried to justify their parts in overthrowing the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893 and annexing it to the United States in 1898. A close study of contemporary international and American newspaper accounts and other narratives about Kalākaua, many highly favorable, results in a more nuanced and wide-ranging characterization of the mō‘ī as a public figure. Most importantly, virtually none of the existing nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century texts about Kalākaua consults contemporary Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) sentiment for him. Offering examples drawn from hundreds of nineteenth-century Hawaiian-language newspaper articles, mele (songs), and mo‘olelo (histories, stories) about the mō‘ī, Reclaiming Kalākaua restores balance to our understanding of how he was viewed at the time—by his own people and the world. This important work shows that for those who did not have reasons for injuring or trivializing Kalākaua’s reputation as mō‘ī, he often appeared to be the antithesis of our inherited understanding. In the last century, facing increased marginalization on land, many Native Hawaiians have found refuge, autonomy, and identity in the waves. In Waves of Resistance Isaiah Walker argues that throughout the twentieth century Hawaiian surfers have successfully resisted colonial encroachment in the po‘ina nalu (surf zone). The struggle against foreign domination of the waves goes back to the early 1900s, shortly after the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, when proponents of this political seizure helped establish the Outrigger Canoe Club—a haoles (whites)-only surfing organization in Waikiki. A group of Hawaiian surfers, led by Duke Kahanamoku, united under Hui Nalu to compete openly against their Outrigger rivals and established their authority in the surf. Drawing from Hawaiian language newspapers and oral history interviews, Walker’s history of the struggle for the po‘ina nalu revises previous surf history accounts and unveils the relationship between surfing and colonialism in Hawai‘i. This work begins with a brief look at surfing in ancient Hawai‘i before moving on to chapters detailing Hui Nalu and other Waikiki surfers of the early twentieth century (including Prince Jonah Kuhio), the 1960s radical antidevelopment group Save Our Surf, professional Hawaiian surfers like Eddie Aikau, whose success helped inspire a newfound pride in Hawaiian cultural identity, and finally the North Shore’s Hui O He‘e Nalu, formed in 1976 in response to the burgeoning professional surfing industry that threatened to exclude local surfers from their own beaches. Walker also examines how Hawaiian surfers have been empowered by their defiance of haole ideas of how Hawaiian males should behave. For example, Hui Nalu surfers successfully combated annexationists, married white women, ran lucrative businesses, and dictated what non-Hawaiians could and could not do in their surf—even as the popular, tourist-driven media portrayed Hawaiian men as harmless and effeminate. Decades later, the media were labeling Hawaiian surfers as violent extremists who terrorized haole surfers on the North Shore. Yet Hawaiians contested, rewrote, or creatively negotiated with these stereotypes in the waves. The po‘ina nalu became a place where resistance proved historically meaningful and where colonial hierarchies and categories could be transposed. 25 illus.

American business interests and the desire for a constitutional monarchy were pitted against the desire of the monarchs, King Kaläkaua and Queen Liliuokalani, to strengthen the power of the throne. The convulsions of the 1887 and 1889 revolutions were succeeded by the overthrow of the monarchy on January 17, 1893. Documents revealing the struggle over annexation, beginning in 1893, and the counterrevolution of 1895 are an important component of this volume. Annexation in 1898 was followed by a two-year period during which functions of government and laws were altered to conform to those of the United States. After the organic act became effective in 1900, vestiges of monarchical Hawaii disappeared and the history of the Territory of Hawaii unfolded. As with the previous volumes, Volume 4 is a record of printed works touching on some aspect of the political, religious, cultural, or social history of the Hawaiian Islands. A valuable component of this series is the inclusion of newspaper and periodical accounts, and single-sheet publications such as broadsides, circulars, playbills, and handbills.
