Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King John in Fact and Fiction If we would understand the John of literary tradition we must first envisage the real John as he appeared to historians of his own time and later. Though they may be biased, they present his life and character as fact, not as fiction. These chroniclers and annalists fall into three groups: those who record events as they happened; those who write long enough after the events they treat to have gained a perspective but who may have lived through the event and who may certainly have much original in formation from various sources; and lastly, compilers who, while rarely independent or individual, may give in a sense a broader view since they represent the body of fact as currently accepted.x The conception of John arrived at from this study aflords a standard to which we can refer the several literary presentations of his figure and character and thereby understand their wide divergences. Do you suppose they can begin to purchase their bread and butter, or even so much as the bread without the butter, with the proceeds of their great learning and accomplishments in that kind? No, not a bit of it For the necessaries of life, every man of them has to depend mostly, if not entirely, on other means. If they had nothing to feed upon but what their Shakespeare knowledge brings them, they would have mighty little use for their teeth. If you do not believe this, ask the men themselves: and if they tell you it is not so, then I will frankly own myself a naughty boy, and will do penance publicly for my naughtiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Action and Motive of King John I was strongly impressed with her truthful ness, honesty, conscientiousness, and purity of thought and act. She was introspective and analytical, even at that age, and studied her motives of thought and deed. I believe her inmost thought could bear the strongest sun light. Clara was sensitive, and ardent in her affections. Her sympathy with the sad and sorrowing was expressed less by words and tears than by her deep silence. This silence was one of her peculiarities; it was a silence of her whole being, and in it lay much of her power. She was, in general, reticent relative to her own convictions and emotions. Clara's lessons were a pastime rather than a task. Her clear, incisive intellect seemed to penetrate at a glance to the very depth of the author's meaning. She knew nothing of intel lectual toil or effort in those days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book King John

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marc Morris
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-10-15
  • ISBN : 1605988863
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book King John written by Marc Morris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King John is one of those historical characters who needs little in the way of introduction. If readers are not already familiar with him as the tyrant whose misgovernment gave rise to Magna Carta, we remember him as the villain in the stories of Robin Hood. Formidable and cunning, but also cruel, lecherous, treacherous and untrusting. Twelve years into his reign, John was regarded as a powerful king within the British Isles. But despite this immense early success, when he finally crosses to France to recover his lost empire, he meets with disaster. John returns home penniless to face a tide of criticism about his unjust rule. The result is Magna Carta – a ground-breaking document in posterity, but a worthless piece of parchment in 1215, since John had no intention of honoring it. Like all great tragedies, the world can only be put to rights by the tyrant’s death. John finally obliges at Newark Castle in October 1216, dying of dysentery as a great gale howls up the valley of the Trent.
