Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titles have always been conferred on persons both to identify their functions in society and to assign honorary status. In Egypt even more than in Mesopotamia, function-related and honorary titles were so valued that officials and functionaries of varying stations collected the titles accrued in their lifetime and preserved them in a titulary, the ancient equivalent of a resume. Israelites serving at the royal courts in Jerusalem and Samaria or in local administrations also held title, but the sources suggest far fewer of them than their neighbors. Nili Fox analyzes the titles and roles of civil officials and functionaries in Israel and Judah during the monarchy, including key ministers of the central government, regional administrators, and palace attendants. The nineteen titles fall into three categories: status-related titles, function-related titles, and miscellaneous designations that could be held by a variety of officials. Fox sets these Israelite and Judahite titles in their ancient context through extensive study of Egyptian, Akkadian, and Ugaritic records. She also draws upon the corpus of Hebrew epigraphic material, which allows her to explore economic components of state organization such as royal land grants, supply networks, and systems of accounting, which would be impossible to understand on the basis of the Hebrew Bible alone. Fox also treats the widely debated issue of whether Israelite state organization was influenced by foreign models and, if so, how much. The evidence of non-Hebrew sources offers little concrete material to substantiate theories that Israel modeled its government after a foreign prototype, and Fox offers a more finessed approach. Many features of Israelite administration are best explained as basic elements of any monarchic structure in the ancient Near East that developed to satisfy the needs of an evolving local system. Other seemingly foreign features have a long tradition in Canaan and probably were naturally assimilated. Fox recognizes the interconnections between the cultures in the region but emphasizes the need to closely examine the Israelite system with internal evidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians claim to have faith in a Bible that doesn’t exist. That’s right, they say they believe the “original autographs” were without error, but they don’t have them! We need a Bible we can trust that we can actually hold in our hands. Here are 51 reasons why you can trust the King James. Be ready to give an answer! ----------- More: Our world is split between two camps: those with faith, and those with doubt. Right now, those with doubt are outnumbering those with faith. But God only blesses faith. It’s “the Christian faith” —not the Christian doubt. Are there reasons to trust that God kept His promise to preserve His own words? Yes! There are many. This book is a small collection of those. People have been finding, not only what faith looks like, but have actually made the move and left the doubting Bibles, with their contradictory doctrines, and come to the King James. There they found a consistent message, consistent doctrine, and a consistent faith. So they can hold the Bible up in their hands and say, “Thus saith the Lord! This is the words of God.” Trusting God’s Words Can Change Your Church! The result? An increase in holiness, faith, soul-winning, Christian growth and confidence in the Scriptures. Book The Incorporation and Integration of the King s Tributary Lands into the Norwegian Realm c 1195 1397

Download or read book The Incorporation and Integration of the King s Tributary Lands into the Norwegian Realm c 1195 1397 written by Randi Bjørshol Wærdahl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of a Norwegian medieval state had consequences beyond Norway. Inspired by transnational research on state formation, this book presents a comprehensive study of the political incorporation and subsequent judicial and administrative integration of Iceland, the Faroes, Shetland, and Orkney, into the Norwegian realm c. 1195-1397. Building on centuries-old cultural, economic, and political ties, the Norwegian crown established direct royal lordship over the former autonomous and semi-autonomous areas. Judicial unity, administrative development, and the king’s local representatives ensured that the tributary lands were comprised in the state-formation process. Although the political and administrative system allowed for local variation, the process led development in the direction of a unitary state, at least in judicial and administrative terms.

Book excerpt: Rabbi Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) of Philadelphia was responsible for the first Jewish translation of the Bible made for American Jewry. Leeser's considerable learning in matters biblical and rabbinic derived in major measure from the fine research then flowering in Germany, and his translation of the Bible became in a short time the standard Bible for English-speaking Jews in America. I originally put this edition together, edited it and published it as a gift to my own father, who loves this Bible version.

Book Conspiracies in the Egyptian Palace

Download or read book Conspiracies in the Egyptian Palace written by Naguib Kanawati and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original study examines the claims for sensational intrigues in the 6th century Egyptian palace, culminating in the possible assassination of King Teti by his own bodyguards. New evidence from the author's recent excavations is set against the written claims of the ancient historian Manetho. This offers the reader a unique opportunity to compare archaeological and historical evidence, and sheds new light on the political conspiracies and quarrels of the age. With over 80 illustrations, and clear presentation of the dynastic tomb excavations, the book also gives a rare and accessible insight into Old Kingdom society and administration under the kings Unis, Teti and Pepy I. It will be valuable to all students of Egyptian history.
