It has been created from online copies at FamilySearch.org. For the years 1783 through 1786 only alterations were made to the 1782 and subsequent lists. The earliest list in King and Queen contains the name of the owners of the land (as the person taxed), the number of acres owned, the rate of value from which taxation was calculated, and the total value of the land. Initially the local sheriff(s) created the list. In October 1786, an Act of Assembly established districts in each Virginia county, positions for Commissioners of Revenue, and for recordkeeping of land taxes to include persons' names owning land, the number and yearly rent of lots where a town was involved, quantity of land, rate of land per acre, total value of land exclusive of lots, and amount of tax at 11/2 percent of the value. Recordkeepers often made notations to distinguish multiple persons with the same name. Entries for the same owner through the years may shift to including "Estate" or "Est." to indicate a recent death of the owner, and may remain on the list until the estate is settled For genealogical researchers, land tax records may help distinguish between individuals by the same name living in a locality at the same time. Land ownership may be tracked between family members. Some references, notations and estate divisions may be found here when not readily located in any of the few court records that have survived multiple fires at the King and Queen County courthouse. The earliest list in Essex contains the name of the proprietor (personal paying the tax) and the names of the taxable Negroes. By 1783, the details are expanded to include a tabulation for white tithes, black tithes (and total number of slaves), neat cattle, horses, wheels and ordinary licenses. There are lists for eight different districts in Essex County for 1782, five districts for 1783 (with multiple versions for some), eight for 1784, six for 1785, and four for 1786. The districts are numbered, generally, from south to north in the county; with the first being the bottom of the county, and the eighth being the top part of the county. Starting in 1787, a single list covered the entire county, and this continued through 1807. For genealogical researchers, tax records may help distinguish between individuals by the same name living in a locality at the same time. Some references, notations and evidence of estate divisions may be found here when not readily located in other court records. Plus, the tax record for 1790 and 1800 serves as a replacement for lost Federal census records. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.

The book is organized into three parts--includes a historical introduction and transcripts of Fauquier's nineteen never before published colonial tax lists of 1759-1782. Four different indexes are included: 1759-1778 list, 1759-1778 tithables, slave holders and slaves, 1782 tithables, 1782 slave holders and slaves. Officials mentioned in this work include Thomas Marshall, George Lamkin, John Marshall, Gilson Foote, John Kirk, Armistead Churchill, John Kirk, William Grant, John Moffet, Thomas Keith, William Pickett, William Blackwell, Charles Chilton, John Blackwell, and William Heale. These tax lists were discovered in a 1994 preservation and repair project funded by the Library of Virginia. The Tax and Fiscal records were done by the Justices who took the lists of Tithables from Fauquier's residents and by the Sheriff and other officials who took the tax and were responsible for their transmission to the colonial capital. The colonial tax lists, those taken before 1782 were loosely termed Tithable Lists--included both property and land. During and after 1782, these lists were divided into two distinct tax lists which included personal property tax lists and land tax lists.
